I had a job interview today that got an extremely favorable response. The hiring principal told me that she thought I would be perfect in a certain classroom and immediately scheduled a trial teaching session for next week. I'm really hopeful about this, because in the past my interviews have been more "eh, we'll call you at some point".

8/9/2010 11:05:40 PM
just started week number 3 of unemployment. Started a new 30 jobs in 30 days kick in hopes of landing a job soon. Wish me luck!
8/9/2010 11:10:16 PM
I have an interview in Charlotte today. The recruiter told me yesterday it would be at 2pm. Then he said it was moved up to 1pm. I was about to leave til he calls me and says it was a mistake, it's still at 2pm.
8/10/2010 9:24:38 AM
It is just an hour. Deal with it. You won't get a job being a whiney bitch.[Edited on August 10, 2010 at 9:27 AM. Reason : good luck though!]
8/10/2010 9:27:05 AM
welp, didnt get the job I interviewed for, actually, nobody did apparently according to the HR lady....looks like they will change the questions and repost...odd, was open for a month and a half for this posting. I knew it was a longshot, but the questions were so general that is why I applied. It makes me think nobody internal wanted the position (more responsbility, no increase in pay basically) and they wiill have a hard time finding someone (does not appear they want to train, got that impression during the interview, or you will be trained for 2 days and then considered an expert and you are on your own).[Edited on August 10, 2010 at 1:51 PM. ^^ I wasn't trying to be a whiney bitch. I just wanted them to get my interview time straight.
8/10/2010 11:45:53 PM
Provisionally hired! The company has to wait for my background check to clear before making a formal offer.I'm letting out a huge sigh of relief after over a year of being jobless and flat broke.
8/11/2010 10:22:51 AM
I have already heard back from my recruiter on my interview in Charlotte yesterday. They don't want to move forward with me. They gave no reason why. However, I did have an interview for another job in RTP this morning. I hope that one works out.
8/11/2010 1:48:54 PM
nothing worse than trying to read between the lines of an e-mail post-interview and pre-decision and trying to figure out what the heck is going to happen
8/11/2010 10:43:54 PM
If anyone is interested in an entry level genomics science job let me know. I work for a small company in RTP that is hiring a couple of low level bench science jobs. Just PM me and I can give you the company name and you can see if the job descriptions are something that might interst you.
8/15/2010 12:31:02 PM
Had a good on-site day long interview on the 10th, now I'm waiting to hear back. They had to interview about 4 other candidates and should know by the end of next week.
8/15/2010 12:50:14 PM
Had my interview for a state job on July 1st. Keep in mind I live in Oklahoma at the moment and have BS and MS degrees in meteorology. I did an in person interview since I could schedule it during my vacation back to NC. Wore a suit and felt I did ok with the interview. Felt like a good opportunity because I really want to move back to NC as soon as possible. I was told that a decision would be made at the end of the month.I had yet yet to hear back, so a few days ago I called to see what was up. Apparently the decision was made, but the main interviewer took an extended break (6-8 weeks, for a justified reason) and I guess it's been tied up with the budget or something. Anyway, I'm supposed to hear about it soon, though none of my contacts I listed on my state application were called. I did send in a cover letter and references with my state application, but it seems like those never reached the interviewer.Bottom line is, I'm guessing I won't get the job because my references were not contacted. Though I have had a job offer before without interview (for a National Weather Service job, no less). Thoughts?
8/15/2010 12:54:22 PM
As per my unnecessary thread that has now been locked, I've been looking for 2 months now. It's encouraging to hear that even longer than that is not uncommon, but I'm not getting any interviews. I'm not getting anything, not even an automated email saying "thanks but no thanks."
8/15/2010 9:50:24 PM
^ i got about 6 interviews in the first three weeks of job searching, and then didn't get another interview until MONTH three, so I wouldn't worry about the initial pains. Just keep applying until you hit something, although I am currently sitting at week 4 of unemployment and month six of job applications.
8/15/2010 11:27:29 PM
i assume this is for NC since it came in my inbox but i really dont know

I'm just throwing this out there for you guys. City of Atlanta is planning on adding 300 police officers to the force by the end of the year and is hiring now. It may not be your first choice, but it is a job. http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/atlanta-police-aggressively-hiring-592991.html

Getting pretty frustrated. Have been in the top two or three candidates when called for a second interview about 4 times in a row and have wiffed on all four jobs. Waiting to hear back from 3 interviews and have 2 in raleigh this week so maybe something will work out soon.
8/16/2010 11:04:49 PM
for those of you that job search online:how many hours a day do you spend doing that? do you have any particular strategy to the search or do you just kinda go?do you have a generic-ish cover letter that you just tailor to fit the job every time or do you write totally new ones for each job you apply for?writing cover letters is like my least favorite activity of all time. i just don't know what to say without it sounding like complete bullshit - well i mean it sounds really good when i write it, but i'm sure whoever reads it can see right through it all. even if i'm genuinely interested (which i usually am) i feel like they just read it and probably think i'm bullshitting. anyone else feel like this?
8/17/2010 1:37:39 PM
its not entirely what you know, its who you know. you guys need to network more.[Edited on August 17, 2010 at 1:43 PM. Reason : x]

I probably spend about 3 hours a day just researching companies and every once in a while I'll apply online but most times I'll use my contacts/online sources to directly contact the hiring manager or an exec. Really online job searching, while not completely a waste of time, is the worst way to get hits. I think I remember reading that about 1% of all jobs are gotten through simply applying online. I have full registered access to OneSource and D&B though thanks to my previous employer, so it's quite easy to find hiring managers, who is hiring, executive contacts, etc, etc using those.Use a recruiter, use LinkedIn (which I'm HORRIBLE about) and even put yourself out there and get informational interviews with employers who you might be interested in even if they aren't hiring right now.And I know people are probably thinking, this guy doesn't know what he is doing since I still don't have a job, but I've had quite a bit of good leads and turned down a few offers (when I was misreading the market). It's a lot more difficult to run a job search in an area where you don't have the professional network that you did in your previous area of employment (read: California).Re: Cover letters. I have a sort of generic base but I always highly tailor it to the position. I've heard people increasingly say that if you're applying online and don't know the position that well (from the description) or if you don't know the name of the actual hiring manager then don't bother. Almost all crucial information that hiring managers will look for to pass the eye test will come from the resume itself.[Edited on August 17, 2010 at 1:48 PM. Reason : ^ truth]

Covers letters only benefit you if they're really good...otherwise they're a negative. We get covers letters that read like a "get to know you" summary someone might write on the first day of 6th grade.

8/17/2010 2:29:28 PM
I spend a couple of hours a day looking for a job. I do a little bit of everything. I do my online job search, LinkedIn networking, follow up with recruiters, etc.
8/17/2010 10:46:46 PM
is that 30k after or before taxes?
8/17/2010 11:15:38 PM
ttt RE: my question ^^^ cover letters? how do you guys do yours when spending hours searching for jobs? i get so bored of tailoring them that it hampers my job search. plus searching online freaking blows. does anyone just mail unsolicited resumes and cover letters to places they'd like to work?
