Im of the opinion that there wouldnt ever be an outright ban on firearms, but I could definitely see a renewed AWB in the future. I bought into a little of the fear and purchased my first AR-15 as a kit (hasnt arrived yet, ordered 11/22/08) from Del-Ton (thanks to advice from you guys). Luckily, they haven't raised thier prices in response to the demand.

In a couple years, maybe. Right now or in the near future would be political suicide, especially seeing how a bunch of seats are up in 2010.the Brady bunch has already been told that they're pretty far down in the queue of to-do's, and it's not politically expedient by any stretch of the imagination with the midterm elections coming up. In my honest opinion, I don't think we will see an AWB within at least two years - but sometime after that, we very likely will, and it will make the '94 bill look beautiful. Taxing ammunition out the ass isn't too far-fetched either, and I can see that flying in the first half without much trouble. The whole retarded "bullet control" thing has been gaining way more traction than it should among idiot lawmakers.

What do you all recommend for a good sub-compact? I've been thinking about a Glock 29, HK P2000 SK (.40), or the Seecamp LWS. Thoughts?
1/7/2009 3:01:04 PM
I'm about to pick up a Springfield XD-9 SC. I'll let you know how I like it once I get one, and if anyone else has one, input is appreciated.
1/7/2009 3:03:27 PM
are you sure you want a .40 s&w for a subcompact?
1/7/2009 4:00:12 PM
yeah, if i were to go the SC route, i'd probably keep it to a 9mm (cheap rounds and there are plenty of models out there that accommodate). I don't think I will need to worry about this, though, as most full size pistols fit me fine and "compacts" are about as small as I like to handle (I have big hands though). I've tried firing the keltec's, and while very cool, I just felt like I couldn't get a good grip on them (i only had 1 and 1/2 fingers on there besides my trigger finger). I'm a big enough dude to where a standard size polymer frame pistol is a fine hip piece, and if I ever felt the need to carry a second, it would probably be a j-frame smith & wesson on the ankle.on a different note, I finished the work on my shotgun (there was one step that was a total pain in the ass)- I will post pic's once I can get them off the camera and onto the interwebs[Edited on January 7, 2009 at 4:12 PM. wather pps is the smallest/thinnest that i've used. nice pistol.
1/7/2009 4:22:24 PM
the P11 keltec I have has the 357 sig/40SW barrels and slid with it, I shoot it with the 9mm slide at the range, then put it back int eh truck with the sig or 40 barrel on it.
1/7/2009 4:46:00 PM
I have a Glock 23 Compact and a Glock 27 sub compact. Those are both .40 and I actually shoot better with my G27. You can swap in a .357sig barrel or a 9mm barrel as well, and there is a .22 conversion that you can get. I love the fact that you can have so much versatility with one gun. With the G23 frame, there is also a carbine conversion if you are looking for a rifle.

ok- for subcompacts, I held the mp9c last night, and with the magazine extension, it is right there on the limit of what I'm able to hold onto. It felt goodand I typically prefer the MP over any glock or other polymer frame gun (I would have gotten one instead of the taurus had the price on the taurus not be so good). I'm gonna try shooting it a couple times next time I go to the range to see what I think (PDHSC has demo version of it). They actually recommend it over the glock as well

^ Hahaha. When I bought my Beretta 92 the guy behind the counter warned me that I had to be careful using that in close quarters because somebody could grab it, hit the takedown lever, and then yank the slide off of it before I could get a shot off (a la Lethal Weapon 4).He proceeded to demonstrate while I held the pistol but gave up after about 6 tries.
1/8/2009 2:51:03 PM
The guy behind the counter told my dad he should not use oil to lube the slide rails, and use grease instead. The reasoning: With the first shot, the heat would evaporate all of the oil. RIGHT.

You can get one of those, if you pay the $200 NFA tax for the SBR (short barrel rifle). Then pay the company and you will be fine.
1/8/2009 3:59:54 PM
Went to put an XD-9 SC on order and handled an XD-9 4" while I was at PDHSC. I ended up liking it better than I thought I would (hadn't handled one before) and walked out with it instead. It's very similar to the G19, which I had only excluded because I shoot lead reloads.I'll be giving it some test firing tomorrow, but it feels really good in my hands. Now that I've got that one, my PT111 carry rig is for sale.
1/8/2009 5:15:38 PM
^I've got the exact same thing, but I'm a n00b when it comes to handguns, only owned shotguns and some plinker rifles. For other new people, I think it's been said before-make sure to actually clean and lube it before the first time at the range. The factory stuff isn't enough and I didn't realize this until I started to notice the finish on the barrel already wearing off after a few magazines. I had to use their assistive? loader on the first few magazines because they were damn near tough to get the last few rounds of the 16 into those things. My slide release was also stiff as hell at first.[Edited on January 8, 2009 at 6:49 PM. Reason : well nm, PSA]

I was told by some in the high point pd that they were taught to pull the slide back too. Something about metal on metal something or other... The only reason I have heard against not using the slide release is that you have to have two hands- my argument to that though is that you have to use two hands to insert a new magazine anyway
1/9/2009 2:32:35 PM
slide stop being used as a push to drop wears on the slide and the stop. In fact on my little keltec it raised a bur on one slide until I rounded the edge of the sharp stamped stop.Do I train to use it? I use it on the range, but then its a pull back, push down, release as some guns, the Ruger mark 3 22/45 for example, have a stay up type stop vs a drop free when slide is pulled type.I have done 1 hand drills at the range. holster, re-load while holstered, even armpit tuck to allow you to grab a fresh mag. A lot is all in how you train. If you always train to thumb drop the release, never to second hand the slide, what do you do when a gun does not have a external hold open? KelTec 32 and 380 models have a empty mag hold open only, no external tab for your thumb. Similar to the Israeli method of teaching tap rack bang on any gun you pick up, always using the slide to chamber the next magazine worth means that if your slide stop FAILS you do not have to change your reload pattern. If a damaged top round stick on the feed ramp, or any other issue happens, you already have a hand on the slide. And it means you train for only 1 method on all semiauto's to deal with a gun not in battery. pull to the rear, let go. If gun does not fire, pull to the rear, release, try again. A lot of it is a muscle memory thing.

I've read through the NC Firearms laws but didn't find anything that explicitly mentioned the sale of rifles and shotguns. I understand a Pistol Permit Purchase isn't required, but what do I need to purchase a rifle? I'm interested in a .32 or .308 bolt-action and was curious if all I needed to do to buy one was just do the NCIS background check?
1/9/2009 4:09:10 PM
no permits required for a rifle or shotgun
1/9/2009 4:34:26 PM
^so i just walk up, buy one, and leave?
1/9/2009 4:56:55 PM
you walk up, fill some papers, they make a call to the NICS or whatever for the 'instant' background check, and you walk out, pretty much

^ Can you not carry concealed without a CCW as a LEO?
1/10/2009 3:10:33 AM
yeah, my friend just got his badge and he said that pretty much counts as a CCP, so i'm wondering who is right here[Edited on January 10, 2009 at 7:04 AM. Reason : evwopb]
1/10/2009 7:03:36 AM
As an LEO, there is two ways to do it. 1. You can carry on your agency creds, w/ a weapon you have qualified on. Usually the state mandated course of fire day/night. Carrying this way exempts you from NC CCH laws. Your agency can regulate what min/max caliber, action, manufacturer and add more agency regulations like how long after your last drink, how it can be concealed, holster, etc. 2. Obtain a CCH permit just like eveyone else, carry anything you want, no qualification but you are constrained bt NC CCH laws.[Edited on January 10, 2009 at 9:19 AM. Reason : ....]

Does anyone know which pawnshops around town have decent gun offerings? A couple I've been too have been gun-free...
1/10/2009 6:55:20 PM
There are several counties that require their officers to carry when they are off duty. I believe it would be a county to county regulation.
1/10/2009 7:43:39 PM
Its might be county regulated as far as agency policies but the NC Attorney General has said an LEO can carry anywhere/anytime in NC as long as you are not under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Now, carrying in a different state can be tricky. If you are a sworn LEO, you cannot be charged w/ CCW by other states laws. However, you must comply w/ city/town ordinances.

is there any federal .22lr bulk to be had in Raleigh? I can get it online for $16/525 +shipping. Walmart at brier creek was out of many kinds of ammo but still had blazer brass on the shelves in good quantity ( 9, 40, & 45)
