You'd have to be borderline drooling to think disc media has a prayer against downloadable content.
1/9/2008 11:39:46 AM
depends on what you mean by "has a prayer". If you mean discs will make more money overall in the next 20+ years then I'd say you're right, they don't have a chance. But I really don't see downloads ever completely taking over physical media just because of people like me that have 400+ DVD collections. I just think there are too many people that want the actual discs to go along with their movies. Sure it's old fashioned, but I still think there's always gonna be a market for non-downloadable movies. At least for the next 20 years or so.

Every company that has anything to do with networking knows VOD is going to be a big value point in the future.Thats what makes these arguments fun.
1/9/2008 11:51:58 AM
1/9/2008 11:54:59 AM
i think they're different aspects of video as with audiosome people will always swear by hard media and not want to chance things to network speed/traffic quality of a download over the quality of the original media.for owning movies, i think hard media will nearly always be on top, for renting movies, i'd say that on-demand video will by far be the winnerbut with audio people are satisfied with downloads because a lossless format can be had at a reasonable size, as storage becomes cheaper and larger sizes along with more fiber connections in homes, this 'may' be a future of HD, but it'll surely take awhile.

It's just not the same to me. If I'm gonna download a movie, I'm sure as hell not gonna pay for it.]

^^^OK, so I guess Golovko was right. Microsoft had no stake in HD-DVD whatsoever. My bad.
1/9/2008 12:00:54 PM
WellThey chose not to stall the XBox360 for HD DVD.A gambit that has them assraping the PS3 by every gaming metric except hardware.

^^haha...you are such an idiot. it's actually pretty funny.ps3 will never touch xbox 360 combined with xbox live...it just won't happen. they'll have a few decent games and a decent online interface, but by the time they get close to the same library and gaming community, it will be time for the next-gen systems to roll out.[Edited on January 9, 2008 at 12:07 PM. i can't wait in a few years when the profile 2.0 movies come out.. 75% of the HDM consumers will start bitching about having to spend another $texas on a new player that supports 2.0 movies.HD DVD was technically superior. the 3X HD DVD brought the capacity up to 45GB, neutralizing BRD only advantage. Their standard is set, support interactive features, and web content, etc. The lasers are cheaper to make b/c they don't require such a high quality lens that blu-ray needs. Blu-ray disc production has a much lower yield right now. HD DVDs can be stamped on standard dvd production machines. Why companies and studios are willing to spend more money to get a working disc on the shelf is beyond me.. The only reason HD DVD lost is b/c of the content and the fact that you can't do anything worthy on the PS3 except watch Bluray movies. Not enough of the major studios were releasing on HDDVD thus why more BRD movies were sold. Look at the HDDVD exclusive movies and how well they sold.
