ok guys, I'm on a steep learning curve with my new XTi, but I have decided to ask for some lenses for Christmas/Birthday... so after a lot of reading I think I want to get a prime lens, and possibly a telephoto, i'm looking at these 4:Canon 17-85 mm EF-S F/4-5.6 IS USM LensCanon 70-300 mm EF f/4-5.6 IS USM LensCanon EF 50mm f1.4 USMCanon EF 50mm f/1.8 IIfeedback? I primarily shoot landscapes, limited portrait, sports (football and racing), etc... just basically anything that looks cool I want to shoot.

I dropped my 30D and a 70-200mm f/2.8L today (about 3500 dollars in equipment). My camera is fucked, even though there is no visible damage. The meter, shutter, AF, everything works, it just won't record anything. I keep getting error 99. I'm sending it off tomorrow, so I'll be without a camera for a few weeks Today is a terrible day.

any opinions on the pentax k100d? i've got my eye on that.trying to spend < $650 including at least one lens, even if it's a marginal kit lens. might get something that's used and a little nicer if it falls in the same range.

^^ that sucks, man...good luck with it, i hope it's not anything major

sorry to hear that ronny. Hopefully it won't be too big of an expense to get it fixed.

Canon Rebel XTi - Canon 85mm f/1.8Taken at f/5.6, 1/800, ISO 100I just got this camera, and it's really the first time I've taken it out. I took this picture at Folly Beach (south of Charleston). The new Canon XTi is awesome...definitely an upgrade over the old XT.[Edited on October 4, 2006 at 9:37 PM. Reason : *]

Under the bridge in Gaston, looking at the paper plant in Roanoke Rapids. Took this shot holding the camera without a tripod, so it's not nearly as crisp as it should be. I'd like to go back and shoot again sometime with a tripod.

XTi = 400D?
10/12/2006 1:35:50 AM
Yes...the XTi is the 400D. XTi is the US name, 400D is the European name. I think it has another name in Japan.

i realize it's not a DSLR, but it makes me sad to realize that the fz50 has 10mp, and the killer (for me), ISO1600 (my fz30 only has 8mp, and a horrific ISO400 max)...all for the same price i paid about 8 months ago if there were one thing better on that camera, i would consider swapping it outor, if i could get a DSLR kit for less than $texas, i'd to that [/pointless complaint that most people will scoff at]
10/16/2006 12:47:22 PM
iso 400 does suck, but you shouldn't bitch about megapixels. 8 is more than enough, and chances are the 10 megapixel point-and-shoot's photos will look like garbage.

Looking to make my first SLR purchase, and wanted some opinions. Not looking to get anything too expensive, just around $700. I've found this one, and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or recommendations.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007QKN22/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/104-5474248-9647134?ie=UTF8 Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens

Larger LCD on rear with settings controls on LCD not on top. If you can find a store that has the XT and XTi on display, go play around with them...the XTi seems to be built much better.
10/18/2006 4:41:33 PM
BTW...the kit lense sucks. Do yourself a favor and get the body without the lense. Purchase a decent lense...go to link to pick one.http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/
10/18/2006 4:43:36 PM
I don't know what the price difference is between the XT and the XTi, but if it is considerable for you, don't let that turn you off from the XT. The 2 MP difference won't mean shit. The better build and extra AF points, however, do sound nice.I've got an XT and I love it. I paid $500 for the body and purchased this lens (for half the MSRP): http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3302&navigator=6.[Edited on October 18, 2006 at 6:01 PM. Reason : ;]

Im also looking to get a DSLR, but I was looking at the nikon D50. Should I get the kit (18-55 and the 55-200) or should I just get the body and some different lenses? If so, what lenses? I am looking to spend around 700.
10/18/2006 8:38:55 PM
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I1ZWRW/ref=noref/002-4876662-2337607?ie=UTF8&s=photoThe XTi (body only) is currently $799. I am very new to this. I just purchased the XTi after several months of looking around. I had finally decided to buy the XT the day before the XTi was released. I happened to come across some information on the XTi coming out the next day so I waited. A lot of stores (CC, BB) don't have the XTi on display, even though they do actually have it in stock. They are waiting to sell out of the XT's before they start selling the XTi's. There are a MILLION things that I didn't know about before I started researching SLR cameras. If you're in the market...research everything to do with lenses. The link I provided earlier is a GREAT site for comparing lenses. Decide what you want to take pictures of the most...and purchase a lense that fits. Not everyone needs a zoom lense. You may be able to live with a couple of fixed focal length lenses, which will be cheaper in the long run (with wider aperatures). If you don't know...learn about the relationship between aperature/shutter speed/ISO speed. It'll all make sense once you learn how those three things work together. This site is a great place to start if you're in the market...http://philip.greenspun.com/photography/building-a-digital-slr-systemLenses can get expensive. I paid $800 for my camera, and have 3 lenses so far which cost about $1300.Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USMCanon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM To me I liked the Canon's much better than the Nikon's. Personal preference. The XTi has a lot of features that were missing on the XT. Some of which are nice (2.5" LCD) and some very nice (9 point AutoFocus). The 10.2 MP is just a bonus.
10/18/2006 9:08:19 PM
I don't like the xti at all. I used it and I thought it was nothing more than meh. I'd rather spend the money towards a used 20D.

Ronny,1S > 5D > 30D > 20D > XTi > XT I agree with you...but when talking about SLR camera's in the $600-$800 range the XTi is tough to beat. The XTi is Canon's response to models such as the Nikon D80, Sony Alpha A100, and Olympus E-500. I also forgot to mention the sensor dust reduction technology which is new. Here's a great review for those in the market.http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XTI/XTIA.HTM
10/19/2006 7:29:07 AM
Suit yourself, but you'd be better off putting the money toward a 20D. I promise you that.
