So what happens if a player is injured and a team is out of substitutions? Do they play a man down?

Also, if a player is injured due to a foul from the other team does this count as a substitution?

^That is why the final substitution is often made very late in the game. Three and that's it. If one of your players is injured after all three, you are just out of luck. Even worse if it is your goalie, in that situation one of the players on the pitch has to take up the goalie position which could be catastrophic.

Yes, they will play a man down if the player cannot return to the field. Doesn't matter how the injury occurred.

This isn't a dig at HUR, his question just made me think of it:

I love when football fans call soccer players and fans pussies, but then learn about things like the sub rules and are like, "Damn, that's pretty brutal."

It's not like it's tackle football though.

So if you are out 3 subs, there is an incentive for the other team to injure a player on the other team. They just need to make it look like an accident so they don't get a red card.

Yeah I guess that's true but it's never really been an issue.

^^^purposely injuring someone beyond the point of returning while having it seem like an accident and not getting punished is much easier said than done. Plus it could still result in suspensions or bans after the game even if a red wasn't rewarded during the game.

They are also dealing with injuries. Vermaelen out, Kompany might be out, which eliminates the strongest part of their team. Their Defense has been pretty untouchable, and possibly the best CB's in the tournament. Losing those two guys would help USA out big time.

I hope the whole Team > Individuals holds true tomorrow. Belgium has yet to really play a solid team game, outside of an organized defense. They have very strong midfield and strikers, but could barely muster up goals vs lower level WC team.

Weird after that crazy group round that there hasn't been a single upset yet in the knockout round. Close calls with Mexico and Algeria. Hoping tomorrow is a day of upsets!

Pretty much ^^^^

No, Guatemala is more like Maryland. They have a bunch of floppers who play dirty. Back in 2008, or 2009 Ruiz was standing about 5 feet away from Mastroeni and flopped, so Mastroeni got a yellow card. Then one of their other players elbowed Lewis in the head and cracked his skull. They play dirty. Ghana really doesn't come across as dirty, they are just one of those teams about the same skill level as the US who seems to always be competing with the US for a spot in the knockout phase. That makes them more like Virginia, GT, BC, VT, Miami, etc.

I will be oh so happy if Kompany can't go today. Of course I hope he isn't hurt but I really really really hope he doesn't play.

Kompany s'il vous plaît ne pas jouer!

Jeez, how many of the Round of 16 have gone to overtime? I think as of yesterday, 3 of the 6 had gone to shoot-outs?

The should give the teams an extra sub if the games go to extra time. So far these extra times have been slow and sloppy.

I'm aware. Would you say that has been the norm for the 4 extra time games or an anomaly? Hell, even during that game, most of the extra time was exactly as I described--slow and sloppy.

If the Swiss win today will be, without much question, the most important soccer game in the country's history. A legit chance at semifinals.

The swiss are playing to go to penalties. I dont know why you would want to do that against this team though. Probably the last team I want penalties with. Even with no kun

The Swiss keeper has been playing out of his mind today though. Probably not a bad thing to bet on him.

Then again, you pack the back and play for penalties, shit like that happens. Would have loved to face this swiss team in the quarters
