Not anymore. Status 3 has been lifted. University is fully open. I live close to a bus stop so if anything this is just extremely inconvenient, but I'll be going to class.

Well I managed to make it up the hill after 3 tries. Sliding backwards = no fun. Definitely found the downside to working in Durham, they have like 1/2 the snow Raleigh does.

The guy that sleeps on my downstairs couch took my Yukon to go do some work, so I have to get the snow off my Tahoe.... FWP.

When I was in school the University would only cancel classes if the Wolfline was unable to operate safely. I guess they've gone soft over the years. If you live too far away from campus to get there without the Wolfine that's your own fault.

right now, yeah, i think it's a late friday/saturday thing

but it's so far out, who knows when it will be or how bad or if it will be anything but cold rain

a sunday event that lets me work from home on monday would be appreciated

Much like JoCo is, this has to be a joke?

It would appear they're not alone.

^^ i thought they got more snow/ice than raleigh did...and even my road still has shaded patches of solid ice

sure, i was able to drive over them yesterday and this morning without any difficulty, but there's a lot more rural area in joco (i assume) and buses might have difficulty picking up some students

i don't actually know if that's the case, but i grew up in a rural area and our roads took forever to get clear after snow/ice

Ah, so Wake, Johnston, Orange, Durham & Cumberland county schools are still closed today?

No wonder the NC public school system isn't known for their educational chops.

Yeah, there are still icy patches on the neighborhood streets out in the rural areas in Wake Co.

It's like a string of old Xmas lights; if one kid can't make it to school safely, none of them can.

^this. there are several roads that haven't seen salt or a plow, or enough traffic to help melt the snow.

hell, i live downtown and my street hasn't been touched. it was cold enough that there was plenty of traction on the ice if you are not driving like an idiot, but I can understand not wanting to put a bus down the road.

i drove from garner to fuquay for work...

i didn't have too much trouble, but i slipped in some spots....

however, i pass no less than 4 schools on the way to work and the road one of those schools is on hasn't even seen a plow...

i wouldn't want to put my kid on a bus going on that road and it's just not feasible for every parent in the county to drive their kid to school....

If the schools in Wake Co are outside of Raleigh, then who is responsible for clearing the roads? NCDOT or each municipality? Either way you would expect there to be enough capacity for those roads to be salted at some point, which would have been enough for them to clear yesterday.

^^ and ^ no.

Read WRAL if you don't believe me. They have a nice article right now on the fight between DOT, Cary, and Raleigh, over getting Tryon Rd.

DOT is ultimately responsible (for state owned roads, mostly anything not in a subdivision). Problem is DOT takes forever to get anything done.

Municipalities can at their own cost clear their own roads, but they also get to set their own priorities. Cary does all of theirs. Raleigh follows a semi-DOT structure but doesnt do all. Apex does some of theirs, but not all.

Yeah I read that article about Tryon Road. Personally I was a bit surprised on Thursday morning when I saw that only 1 lane each way (in the 4 lane section past Lake Wheeler) was cleared!

Live in Cumberland and work in Sampson. Roads seemed mostly fine this morning but my commute is a straight shot down a main highway. A few secondary roads looked a bit patchy but I assume they would clear up by 10 or 11

the DOT is only required to clear state maintained roads. anything else is as-available. there are state maintained roads in each municipality, but other roads are maintained by the municipalities.

(non-state maintained roads are a lot more than just subdivisions, Raleigh has over a thousand miles of streets it maintains)

that was the line that annoyed me...

i understand the context in that article...but if it doesn't matter who owns the road....send some of those plows to raleigh and help out...

Makes it worse when your boss lives in Cary and all his employees live in NE raleigh. Just because your roads are clear doesnt mean I dont have multiple ice hills to navigate to come in!

^^I had a salt on windshield issue going in to work on Thursday morning. Salt spray coming off the road and, evidently, my windshield washer fluid is not the kind that doesn't freeze. So I tried to use the washers, got nothing, and made the salt film worse. Could barely see for the last few miles of my trip.

i thought the main characteristic of washer fluid is a very low freezing point. otherwise, you can just use water in the summer.
