The thing that is hilarious is that plenty of teams are good every year with 0 5* and sometimes barely any 4* talent. We get TWO 5* and surround them with several 3* and top 100 recruits and we still can't accomplish anything.I mean Lorenzo and CJL are supposed to be program changing recruits. I just don't understand why we have to wait until we get like 12 5* players just to hope to make the tournament. It's gotten REALLY old how bad we play no matter how talented we are.
2/28/2012 3:05:29 PM
just curious, what teams are doing well this year that don't have any 5* and only a few 4*s?
2/28/2012 3:16:06 PM
again....

A circle jerk

I think that face's logic only applys to mid majors where you don't get the McAss whoopin from the elites in conference play.I would like him to name two bad ass teams of the last decade that came from a major conference, and had A 5* surronded by 3*s

2/28/2012 3:56:09 PM
Gonzaga's been consistently good the last decade with no 5's and only a handful of 4's, but as was noted its a lot easier to do in smaller conferences where you can beat up on easy competition an dthen catch a few breaks in the tourney. I can't think of any BCS school thats had consistent success recently with no 5's.

How bout Nova with their Ray-Foye-Nardi-Lowry squad? Were any of those guys top recruits?
2/28/2012 4:23:21 PM
sumpter, ray, nardi, foye, & lowry were all 4*
2/28/2012 4:33:02 PM
The correct answer here is Wisconsin.

Are uva recruits ranked high? Were they when they won the conference a few years ago?Has Maryland ever gotten top guys? What about Arizona state a few years ago or cal this year or vandy every year?
2/28/2012 4:39:43 PM
vanderbilt brought in three 4*s in '08, one in '09, and two this year.Arizona State brought in one 4* in '09, one in '10, and one in '11.California brought in three 4*s in '10 and one in '08Maryland brougt in two 4*s in '08, one in '09, one in '10, and one in '11[Edited on February 28, 2012 at 4:57 PM. ^^ When did UVA win the conference??
2/28/2012 5:11:51 PM
you're not really going back far for the timeframes i was referring to for some of those teams but thats okay. Like i said, no five stars and maybe a few 4 stars.Okay so maybe Cal did have some talent (not more than us)Arizona State i was right on and vandy maybe has a few recent guys but pretty sure that isnt usually the case.Maryland won a freaking title with predominately no star talent.^ regular season... '07 or so [Edited on February 28, 2012 at 5:12 PM. Reason : a]
2/28/2012 5:12:09 PM
I forgot...that was when they had Reynolds and Singletary. Reynolds was UVA all basketball and won like three state championships...THEN he went and crushed it at Oak Hill for a prep year.I thought Singletary was a 5-star recruit...but I could be wrong on that one.
2/28/2012 5:23:20 PM
^^Scout star-rankings don't go back beyond 2002, when they Maryland won their championship.... but in the incoming class of 2002, Maryland picked-up five 4 *s.
2/28/2012 5:27:22 PM
singletary was a 4
2/28/2012 5:30:48 PM
UVA won the regular season in '07.They had 3 4*s come in in '03, 1 in '04, and 1 in '06.
2/28/2012 5:34:33 PM
ooooo Vanderbilts good, they've been pretty consistent the past decade9 4's and no 5's the past 10 years, 5 ncaa's and two sweet sixteens
2/28/2012 5:53:03 PM
really? they've had six 4*s since '08.[Edited on February 28, 2012 at 6:02 PM. Reason : ]

Seriously, were people expecting an NC the first year? It will be disappointing when/if we don't make the tournament, but we have had problems all year that can be fixed (depth, perimeter defense, etc). I mean fuck, it was better than it was with Lowe and the coaching search was a shit-show pretty much so I'm not that disappointed with how we've done.
2/28/2012 6:06:31 PM
It really wasn't that much better though considering most of our improvement was to be expected not losing much and having our good players add a year of experience. The giant improvement people think occured is a bit of a mystery really.Next year is the year. What if we still arent a top ~25 team though?
2/28/2012 6:22:12 PM
I don't know, I just know it's more fun to watch this team than in the past. I don't know what it is exacatly, they just look like more of a basketball team.
2/28/2012 6:25:43 PM
yeah, maybe we don't have the results many of us were hoping for, but statistically speaking we are much improved. and again, this team passes the eye test (for 80% of the season, anyway).
2/28/2012 6:28:35 PM
I'm also worried about Gott. He doesn't seem to acknowledge NC State shit. He seems naive about it . Doubt if he factors NC State shit into his plans. Things always go wrong because of NC State shit. Tom O' Brien, for example acknowledges it and works around that, or some days simply shrugs about it (Cincy game). We need multiple 5*s to counteract the NC State shit. Hope Gott does that.
2/28/2012 6:56:01 PM
Was that an attempt to see how many times you could post "NC State shit" in one post?
2/28/2012 7:23:50 PM
2/28/2012 8:12:03 PM
yup, every TOB gameplan has an emergency "what to do in case nc state shit" contingency plan
2/28/2012 8:13:49 PM
pretty sure there's one of those boxes with the glass you have to smash with the little hammerfowler never replaced it though
2/28/2012 8:29:53 PM
face might be trolling like always, but he is right. We have more talent than UVA, Clemson, Miami and maybe even FSU.This is one of the main reasons Sid is gone, had decent talent, and still lost.
2/28/2012 11:16:57 PM
So... Did we get Amile? I don't want to wade through this garbage to get caught up on the recruiting news, someone fill me in.
2/28/2012 11:32:06 PM
No
2/28/2012 11:33:16 PM
No he went to Duke or no we don't know yet?
2/28/2012 11:33:44 PM
He's visiting Duke for the Duke vs UNC game Saturday, and he'll announce shortly after. He has said that he talks to coach K twice a week. He's going to Duke.

Jones is an epic fail as a top recruit. That's as bad as calling Eric Boateng a talented player..

Losing our PG's actually helped us this year.Moving Lorenzo to the point enabled CJW to step in as a fulltime SG which gave us an improvement at PG AND SG from last year. You could argue that AJ has been as good this year if not slightly better than Harrow was in conference play last year. So our depth wasn't really affected either, because we wouldn't have AJ this season (or Purvis next year!) if Harrow had returned.Losing Tracy Smith isn't a huge difference either. We played half the season without Tracy last season and the half that he did play he was a TERRIBLE rebounder and defender. He was much less effective on offense than he was his junior year. Howell's ability to play more minutes this year due to conditioning basically completely offsets losing Tracy. So what we're left with is Wood's improvement as a shooter (was to be expected), CJ Leslie and Painter's overall improvement (was to be expected), Lorenzo improving (was to be expected), and CJW finally fulfilling his promise (that one was a bit of a wildcard). So you can give Gottfried some credit for easing ZoBo into the PG spot, CJW for coming out of his shell, CJL improving, Howell's conditioning improving, Wood getting better at shooting, Painter improving his overall game.... but most of that improvement is due to the players hard work themselves.Gottfried's real signature was installing a better offensive system. One that has definitely been effective. However, he still hasn't solved the defensive woes that have plagued us or the late game collapses that have plagued this University for 20 years. Right now we're competing because we have superior talent and great rebounding. The rebounding is temporary, once we lose Howell and CJL with no good post players behind them that advantage will not only disappear but become a huge weakness. So we better hope this recruiting class is the REAL DEAL and not just another Scooter Sherrill (overrated), Levi Watkins (terrible), JJ Hickson (great potential talent but one and done) type tease.
