Right now the beta for Android is free. I haven't seen where they've announced a price yet but I highly doubt the full version will be free.

yeah, I wouldn't expect it to be free either. Logmein is easier to set up but I think I like phonemypc better. It optimizes for your connection and allows you to use your phone as a wireless mouse/keyboard. It's also in beta and costs $9.99 http://www.softwareforme.com/phonemypc/

Anybody have a good 2x2 clock widget they'd recommend? I've poured through pages of Androlib's suggestions but have yet to come across one which is just right.

Android should mature in a year or two. Until then it's a wild west cash grab with 100 different clocks that all gobble memory and try to display ads.

I haven't had to reboot my Droid in weeks. I consider its stability on-par with that of my former iPhone.

I've factory reset my phone twice since I got it in march. (both within the last couple weeks)
I haven't had to reboot it since the last factory reset like a week ago. Before the first factory reset I had to hard reset (battery pull) just about every other day.

I've have to reboot to get stalled facebook uploads to disappear from notifications, and because the AIMer app doesn't remove itself from the notifications panel even if it's not active.

But, the Droid reboots relatively quickly compared to the BlackBerry storm, so it's not really a big issue.

"Android sold more phones than Apple in Q1, analyst reports
Posted on Monday, May 10, 2010 by Phil Nickinson

Analyst firm NPD reported this morning that Android phones surpassed sales of the iPhone in the first quarter of 2010. Android had 28 percent of unit sales, compared to Apple's 21 percent. Both operating systems lagged behind RIM's BlackBerry OS, which had 36 percent of the unit sales.

NBD credits Verizon's Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris and Verizon's buy one-get-on (BOGO) promotions as leading the push. Can't argue there, and it's reasonable to expect strong numbers again in the second quarter with the launch of the Droid Incredible. "

i wouldn't say 7% is "just barely" also it could be in part because a lot of people are waiting for Apple OS 4.0 and the new phone. historically i think there's been a drop (rather flatline) in the months leading up a new phone, so take it with a grain of salt.

remember, android is not just on phones, it's on tablets, it's going to be on tv's, possibly cars, it's already on 20-30+ cell phones internationally, and there's an android phone for all the major cell phone carriers. not only this but android was really just released to mainstream 9 months ago, Apple has been around 3 years, so even though android has all these devices, their numbers are a bit skewed because Apple is doing it with one phone, but has been around longer.

either way it shows android is successful and many people are happy with it as an alternative to the iphone (rather an alternative to AT&T). android market is growing by 9,000+ apps per month and almost all the major companies are now developing for the android platform. it's good news really. none of this is negative news for Apple, other than the fact that it shows there are a LOT of people out there that "would" get the iPhone but are unwilling to switch to AT&T to get it.

I read a blurb that Sprint was going to have separate Evo plans. I'm already concerned about dumping my SERO plan, I surely hope that I won't be forced into some bullshit Super-Everything Data plan that for instance company discounts would not apply to...

^ would not surprise me to charge more for 4G. If I were sprint, I would expect more to be paid to me if I were giving faster speeds (yes, i know not everyone has 4g).

prospero, it is a 4x3 widget, that is what I was getting at.

AND, with that said.... can someone PLEASE explain why you want a clock widget taking resources (hardly none, I know) when you have a clock in the top right of your notification bar? I have never understood why people like clock widgets.

yeah, they initially charged $10 more for the 3G/4G data card but then made it $59.99 like the regular data plans so who knows how they plan on doing it.

What do you guys use to get music onto your android phones?

I just discovered this:
http://highwindsoftware.com/tutorial.php
I haven't tried it yet but it sounds promising. I have a feeling Apple will shut that down whenever they update iTunes again though

I just use DoubleTwist. After installing, it found all of my music from iTunes pretty much immediately. All I had to do was use the menu to import some playlists. Done. Interface is similar to iTunes, and also links in to the Android Market for apps.

Downside: the built-in Android music player no-likey the music I've downloaded from the iTunes store. Anyone have suggestions on a better player app?

What is the point of iPhone just to hack it and get Android? Just get a fucking Android phone, seriously..

two reasons...

1. because you can (which is really the only reason behind most hacks)
2. because apple is clearly indicating that the iphone 3g is on its way out. if you want capabilities, you go with what offers them.

Exactly, what is the point of any hack really? That's a pretty ignorant outlook. Why would anyone hack OS X to run on non 'Apple' hardware. Just spend 4k and get a Mac.

Looks like no N1 on sprint either. Granted I doubt anyone cares either with the Evo around the corner.

From BGR:
Quote :
"Sprint confirms it won’t carry the Nexus One
by Michael Bettiol on May 10th, 2010 at 4:45pm
Filed under: Android, HTC, Handsets 77 Comments

Following in Verizon’s footsteps, Sprint’s PR people have let it be known that the Google Nexus One will never have a home with the Now Network. Singling out the lack of need for the handset in their portfolio thanks to the bigger, better, faster and stronger HTC EVO 4G, Sprint is no doubt going to raise the ire of the rank and file of the Android Army for killing what was likely their only change to have an Android smartphone exactly as Google intended it. But trust us… We’ve used both and think Sprint did the right thing."

Well, for one thing, you could get to try out Android on a phone that doesn't look like a bucket of warm ass.

[Edited on May 11, 2010 at 12:09 AM. Reason : btw, I doubt you'd find too many people that would buy an iPhone "just to hack it and get Android"]
