yea there have been reports of rotation and funky skies all over the place, but thank god nothing seems to have dropped down out of the sky and actually touched down.

i was on my upper deck at my house in hedingham watching the storm from afar... suddenly the wind started to gust, sheets of rain started pouring, I could see debris (plant stuff) well above any nearby treeline.

The clouds above me were literally rotating and dipping down... I have a good view as I live on the end of a row of houses on the golf course. I decided it was a good idea to come downstairs at that point. then power started going off and on (we have underground powerlines) and wind was WHIPPING by (my dumbass went outside to check and it was howling by.)

I didn't see a funnel cloud, but the news reported there was a tornado, and basically zoomed onto my house on the map.

holy shit.

for future reference, the fairgrounds is a particularly good place to view storms coming in from the west. if you park in the tailgating lot at the corner of Blue Ridge & Trinity, you get a decent view of the southwestern horizon. WRAL and ABC11 were out there taking footage when the storms hit.

there was definitely rotation in the clouds as they passed over Raleigh, but I didn't see anything come close to reaching the ground.

i doubt there was a tornado in the Raleigh/Cary area today, but judging from pictures on WRAL there had to have been a touchdown over near Wilson. the tops of trees were twisted off -- a signature damage pattern for a tornado.

we have another shot at some severe storms today and tonight.

the first round will come this afternoon. the more sun we see today, the more unstable the atmosphere will become, and the better the storms will be.

the second round comes tonight sometime between midnight and daybreak tomorrow associated with an upper-level disturbance. these storms will be in a squall line fashion and give us our best chance at seeing any severe weather. too bad most of us will be asleep when this blows through.

with thunderstorms you often see very low clouds (called 'scud') formed by the storm's outflow racing out ahead of the storm. we have lots of tall trees around here leaving the horizon obscured so these clouds often appear to be reaching the ground when in reality they're not.

the weather service gets flooded with calls by people mistaking these for tornadoes and yesterday was no exception.

well you obviously know more about weather than me, so i believe you. (seriously, not being an ass)

i see low clouds like that and i'd think "tornado!" apparently i'm not alone.

I stepped outside during the time they said Cary/Apex was getting rotation and you could definitely see lower clouds moving the opposite direction of the higher clouds, and the sky had the same green eerie glow associated with a tornado forming. I never really saw any of the clouds moving into much of a funnel though.
