Well that concert was great, but the whole "90 minute standard" for concerts is complete bullshit.

Also I hate Walnut Creek. Taking 30-40 minutes to get out of there is complete crap.

Most bands play a 90 minute set list, including the encore, and that's it.

i'm sure the regulations on outdoor live music have something to do with that as well. I know in Charlotte outdoor concerts have to wrap up by 11pm.

but when I saw Foo Fighters at a small indoor venue last fall they played for over 3 hours and didn't end until close to 1am.

Truly great bands (and jam bands) are the exception. And yes I believe in NC the rule for outdoors is 11pm. However the Black Keys checked out at 10:40.

Also every indoor concert I've been to (in NC or other states) has ended by 11. It's crap

You must not go to many shows. I don't think I've ever been to an indoor show that ended before 12:30

say what? I completely disagree with that. I don't get what the end time has to do with it either. Some shows everyone plays a 30 minute set, some shows the headliner plays for 3 hours. I don't really see a "90 minute" rule. It depends on the setting, the type of music, the number of other bands, etc.

^I mean I guess I don't go to a lot of shows where the artists show a lot of heart then? I honestly cannot remember the last time a band played more than 90 minutes.

I only go to 5-7 shows a year (just guessing off the top of my head). And of those only 2-3 are usually indoors.

Well I hadn't been to Walnut Creek since 2005...

And wouldn't care if I didn't return for another 8 years either

(last small show I went to, at Cat's Cradle with ATE, didn't last that long either).

The number of shows I've been too period where a band played >90 minutes is in the minority and I've probably been to a couple hundred concerts/shows. I don't think the length of a set has anything to do with heart; it's all of the factors I listed above.

For example, Dillinger Escape Plan is my favorite live band ever. They are the most organically energetic and passionate band I've seen on stage and their sets are typically a blistering ~60 minutes even when they are the headliners. mewithoutYou is also one of my favorite live bands who play with a lot of passion and their sets are typically 45-60 minutes depending on the setting.

+1

Nearly every show I've seen indoors ran pretty late into the night...with the only outliers being when there is no opener(s), or maybe a bluegrass show where an older crowd is expected, but even some of those have ran late too.

Flaming Lips, at 730 (well I think they started at 730...I wasn't inside yet). Black Keys started at 9.

The Flaming Lips.

i know they are playing in SC tonight. a few of my friends down there are going. they'll probably have zero criticism of the show because they are part of the whole "I love live music" crowd that vinylbandit disdains.

Just got back from a naturalization ceremony. More than 50 people from more than 30 different countries became American citizens today at the Raleigh-Durham immigration office.

It was really cool. And I registered many of them to vote right after they pledged their oath of allegiance and got their certificate of citizenship. Some were members of the armed forces, some were from Africa, the middle east, Asia, South America, Europe, and all over. Even one Canadian.

The woman officiating the ceremony told her family's story of immigration from Italy a few generations back, and really played up the idea of America as a nation of immigrants. After the ceremony everyone wanted to wait in line to get their picture with their families with the American flag.

Way more people were fluent in English than my pre-conceived notions of what such a ceremony would be like. It looked like a great, and meaningful way to become a citizen. I believe our immigration policies should be reformed to be more sensible and streamlined so that more people can realistically become citizens in this way.

"A Pennsylvania man was arrested this week after police accused him of videotaping his teenage son lighting his now ex-girlfriend's young son on fire.

Edward B. Myers, 35, allegedly used a cell phone to record the incident, which occurred on May 25 at the Saxonburg, Penn., home of his then-girlfriend and her son, according to CBS Pittsburgh affiliate KDKA.

The 7-year-old victim had third-degree burns on his face and chest after Myers allegedly doused the boy's shirt in flammable liquid and watched as his 15-year-old son lit the garment on fire, reports KDKA.

Myers' two sons allegedly shot the victim multiple times with pellet-type guns, according to KDKA."
