Not manned spaceflight but tune in to NASA TV two weeks from today to see the landing of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. Aside from being a key part of the Mars Sample Return campaign that I am working on, it will be deploying the Ingenuity helicopter -- the first powered aircraft to operate outside of Earth's atmosphere.

^Incorrect. First female spacewalk was in the 80s. You may have been thinking about the first ALL female spacewalk, which she was a part of.

When the VP announced that date, it was the first that anyone at NASA had even heard of it. They came up with that goal without consulting anyone that had a legit scientific/engineering background.

If the US really has been to the moon before, which many millions don't believe, why is it not realistic to go there again in 5-6 years?

And did we really 'lose' the technology to get there from the previous trips? I think NASA says that, right? And that's used by moon landing-deniers to bolster their argument that we haven't ever been there because how can we 'lose' that know-how? If you think about it, it really is ridiculous to claim that NASA lost the tech or know-how to get to the moon.

Elon's strategy, like most things SpaceX, is to publicly announce an unrealistic goal to generate hype. Then when he doesn't meet it, people proclaim "at least he tried!". I appreciate the interest he has generated in the space industry but things like this are just ridiculous. Martian launch window opens up roughly every 2 years and we just had one last summer. To put humans on Mars in 2026 means they would have to launch from Earth in about three years. That is three years to finish up the design, do ALL qual and acceptance testing, requirements V&V, and build the actual hardware. They haven't even launch an unmanned payload into LUNAR orbit yet. Actually LANDING humans on Mars is a pipedream at this point. Even if they COULD get all the flight hardware ready in time, I have not seen anything about how they would keep humans alive. Radiation exposure alone is the big problem with long term human spaceflight. SpaceX landing humans on Mars by 2026 is the equivalent of a 5 year old who just learned how to ride a bike claiming that they are going to build a car and drive it from NY to LA in a few days. Humans won't be walking on Mars until mid-2030s at the earliest, and even that is optimistic.

shoot, I know you are a troll account, but you are gonna try harder than that. Going to Mars is a thousand times more difficult than going to the Moon. They are not "technically similar targets" at all.

0EPII1 The only man-rated launch vehicle capable of delivering that payload to the moon would be SLS, which was planned to be ready for launch in the late 2020s. Speeding it up for a 2024 launch date would not be feasible unless Congress was willing to give us an adequate budget, which they are not willing to do. We just don't have the hardware.

We didn't "lose" the technology, it's moreso that the technology is out of date now and we just don't have the funding or political backing to replicate it. I can pull up my work computer right now and dig up just about any data I need on the Apollo program technology in a few hours. In fact, we reference it on a lot of stuff we are doing now. When the Saturn 5 moon rocket was built, we had ~4% of the national budget with the full support of the government and one key mission that the funding was going towards. They said "Get to the moon by the end of the decade any way that you can. Here is a blank check. Do your thing." Nowadays, we have ~0.5% of the national budget, and congress insists that we use heritage space shuttle parts and nitpick every aspect of it. Admittedly, the RS-25 engine is the most efficient liquid rocket engine in existence, but with the right funding/support we could have built a better one that isn't from the 70s by now. On top of that, NASA has thousands of additional projects (as well as the heavy hitters like Artemis, HLS, lunar gateway, and MSR) that the small budget is spread between. Give us the budget and backing that they had in the 60s and we'd have people walking on Europa within our lifetime.

Earth to Mars is 600 times further than to Moon. So 2026 to the Mars is unrealistic for sure if we can just be back to Moon in 2024. Probably 2033 still.

If it was all being built autonomously, it is possible but not likely. Even then, it would be a matter of one robot building a small structure, or a lander placing a prebuilt one on the surface. Launch windows come in to play here. The most efficient launch window to get something to Mars by the end of the decade would be 2026, but that would still be two years in space so it would be unmanned (max exposure to deep space solar radiation is something like ~500 days before humans start having problems). Sending humans to Mars would require a significantly more powerful launch vehicle. It could be launched from Earth in late 2028/early 2029 but it would cost so much more since Mars will be in opposition at that point.

That being said, sending something to Mars is not hard (relatively). NASA has been doing it for decades now. Landing stuff on Mars is challenging, but do-able. Bringing something BACK from Mars has never been done before, so getting that mission done with HUMANS before anything robotic has achieved the same thing is unrealistic. With launch windows on the way back, humans would prob need to be on Mars for about a year and that is when you start to see issues with long term radiation exposure. Sure, you can add radiation protection but that is VERY heavy and not realistic.

In general, all this talk from Elon about getting something from SpaceX to the surface of Mars anytime soon is hot air considering they haven't even sent anything to Lunar orbit yet. SpaceX getting something into MARS orbit by the end of the decade would be a lot more plausible.
