this unsend feature might be a blessing
3/19/2009 9:21:41 PM
^Agreed. It adds a 5 second delay to actually sending the message and displays "Undo" at the top much like when you delete a message, etc. Clicking undo takes it back to the editing stage before you sent it. Supposedly if you close your browser it sends automatically.I like. Enabled.http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/new-in-labs-undo-send.html

i now have google voice
3/20/2009 8:36:44 AM
sameforwarded the new number out to everyone YAY!
3/20/2009 10:47:48 AM
so, with G Voice, you have to get a new number? But you can connect your old number to it, right? So you keep your old number, and all calls and messages are forwarded to your GVoice number? .... but then your cell phone rings whenever either number is called? Or to get the GVoice features, do they hvae to call the new number?
3/20/2009 10:55:10 AM
yeah you get a new number from google that you have to give out to everyoneyour cell phone still keeps its own number so people won't NOT be able to still reach you through itbut to get google's services like voicemail transcription they have to call you at the google number.
3/20/2009 11:09:04 AM
i haven't hit send yet on this emailany downsides anyone sees to google voice?
3/20/2009 12:08:47 PM
well.... besides having a new number? no, but having a new number is a huge pain in the ass for me....
3/20/2009 12:11:21 PM
it may be a huge pain in the ass at the momentbut i'd rather people deal with it once now than have to do it later when i change my cell provideri know number portability and blah blah but they're pretty stingy about letting you cancel your contract sometimes when you try to use those rate hikes as the reason you're cancelling. the only leverage they hold over my head is my number - they can decide it's no longer portable to another service. i'd like to be free from that and say f you hahaand my second reason - i've received a bunch of these number change emails recently - mostly from friends switching to at&t for the iphone. i realized when i got the last email that it wasn't that big of a deal for me to go and change the guy's number - it took all of 10 seconds. i'm hoping everyone is thinking the same way - and even if they don't update their phone books, it's not like my old number will cease to work - which would be the case if i ever asked them to do it in the future for like a new cell number or something.
3/20/2009 12:18:38 PM
I like the "Please wait while Google Voice attempts to contact "Recorded Name"" a lot better than the absurd and random ringback you had with GrandCentral. Interface seems a bit more polished as well. I've been waiting forever to have the SMS feature too.
3/20/2009 7:05:32 PM
fuck i'm so tempted to send this draftnobody has given any good reasons not to yetand i've been reading all this coverage on it tooonly thing i can think of is it's free so if they crash, i can't bitch and moan at anyone like i can with sprintbut then again, i can just tell people to call my sprint number if need be - even though it'd be a hassle[Edited on March 20, 2009 at 7:25 PM. 3/20/2009 7:24:40 PM
ok so after using it for a bit, the only downside is now you have 2 phone numbersyou can't really "get rid of" the one you're having calls forwarded to because outgoing calls from that number still have your original number on them. you'd have to use google voice's web service to place all your calls if you wanted the google voice number to show up in everyone's caller IDthey may allow number porting in the future, but still, your phone would have to have its own number so on other people's caller ID, you'd have a diff number than your google voice number.[Edited on March 23, 2009 at 2:06 PM. it's tight - voicemail transcription, screen calls, listenin on voicemails and decide to pick up or not, SMS gateway through that number, keep your voicemails online - no more checking your voicemail by dialing in a number (though you can if you wanted to) - i like the web interface better - like an email inbox for voicemails

Google Apps for Domains FINALLY has themes and colors. Click on your Settings tab to see if it's activated for your account yet. It's about time. (this is NOT an April Fool's Joke, btw)

^ I'm interested in their non-centralized UPS infrastructure. I wonder how they handle power conditioning?
4/2/2009 3:24:55 PM
^^ cool. That just reminded me of some news from 2006 when I worked at Infineon (before the DRAM unit was spun off into Qimonda). The news was confidential at the time, but, seeing as how Qimonda is in Chapter 11 now, i don't think it will make much of a difference....anyway, in April 2006, Qimonda got an order from "Cardinal" (the internal codename for Google) to provide them with 60,000 2GB DDR2 modules per month for the next 9 months, for a total of $124 Million. That broke down to 1.1 PetaBytes of RAM (1080 TeraBytes), and almost 10 million DRAM chips (we were using 512Mb chips at the time)
4/2/2009 4:36:36 PM
^ That's $230 per stick. That's a steep price, even for 2006.
4/2/2009 4:40:44 PM
not for 2GB FBDIMMs, probably 666MHz, it wasn't. not in 2006and apparently the deal was for $171/module (still have the original email). I'm not sure how the total deal amount of $124M was calculated[Edited on April 2, 2009 at 4:48 PM. Reason : .]

Google to buy twitter?http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10211253-93.html
4/3/2009 3:22:02 AM
big mistake on googles part if they do imo[Edited on April 3, 2009 at 3:23 AM. Reason : hopefully they do not overpay if they do]
4/3/2009 3:22:53 AM
why a mistake? it would fit in pretty well with google's mission - Twitter would ad a huge amount of information for them to analyze, and it could be pretty easily integrated into other services (chat, maps). although, it would be ironic for some high profile people who have recently left google and moved to twitterhttp://fury.com/2009/03/google-design-the-kids-are-alright/http://stopdesign.com/archive/2009/03/20/goodbye-google.html

google voice dialer beta for windows mobile phonesbasically a contacts list "extension"http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=494236for those of you with "fave 5" or whatever calling plans, google voice would essentially make all your calls free.[Edited on April 6, 2009 at 7:49 AM. Is anybody else getting a higher amount of spam in gmail today? I'd say I usually get 1-2 a week that make it through the filters, but today I've gotten 10-15 so far.

GVoice app coming for iPhone soonhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IlvfEBJGx4&feature=player_embedded
4/6/2009 11:42:07 PM
^ i think i might be missing something, but how the hell is it any cheaper or more efficient to call google voice which then calls you back when connected, just to call a number? google voice isn't mobile to mobile or anything, and you already get free domestic calling with most AT&T plans. so i guess the only thing you might be able to save money on is international calls?
4/7/2009 6:26:27 AM
if you set google voice as one of your fave 5s or whatever and you have unlimited calling to/from those 5 numbers, then wouldn't it mean that all your calls are free?i dunno - i have sprint so i've never had a plan with that fave 5 or my circle or whatever
4/7/2009 8:22:30 AM
^ i was wondering how that'd work...i have 10 numbers from alltel, and one of those is Google 411...i use it pretty regularly, and all my calls to Google have been freei would think it'd be the same thing using the gvoice
4/7/2009 8:55:49 AM
so this is only relevant for people who unlocked and are on sprint or t-mobile. weak
4/7/2009 12:35:31 PM
Is google voice some sort of IP relay? I could swear there's a delay when I use it.
4/7/2009 1:18:07 PM
^^ how did you deduce that from ^^^^ that?
4/7/2009 5:37:42 PM
Maybe because AT&T doesn't have plans with "that fave 5 or my circle or whatever".
4/7/2009 5:43:25 PM
neither does sprintand alltel doesand it doesn't require unlocked phonesso who knows what the hell he's talking about...
4/7/2009 6:48:00 PM
haha i think i thought this was the iPhone thread. my bad [Edited on April 7, 2009 at 7:08 PM. Reason : ]
4/7/2009 7:07:56 PM
sprint does, or did. I had no success in getting my super-rep to add it though. They have/had one addon that did 3 numbers free calling and one that does first incoming minute free. I could only get her to change my sero 300 to sero 1250 after they had removed those plans.
4/8/2009 8:51:53 PM
Anybody been using the gvoice service? I just got an email alert for a voicemail that my friend left for me on Saturday. I noticed the missed call on Saturday and called him back, but I never got the voicemail so I just assumed that he didn't leave one. What's up with the 2+ day delay?
