I like the fact they look perky and naturally firm yet the areola tends to be undefined and light, i would like it to be slightly darker, smaller and without the hair follicles so dominate

Those "hair follicles" are actually called "Montgomery's Tubercles" or "Glands of Montgomery".

Glands of Montgomery are sebaceous glands in the areola. The glands makes oily secretions to keep the areola and the nipple lubricated and protected.

The glands become exposed and raised when the nipple is stimulated.

They are named after Dr. William Fetherstone Montgomery (1797-1859), an Irish obstetrician who first described them.
