im reposting it bc it really is badass

i also got a really cool compliment at the gym yesterday actually.
ive pretty much been sticking with cardio and upper body strength training for the past 2-3 weeks now and ive slowed down a lot, at least until my knee stops feeling wonky.

i was on the stair stepper and a guy came up to me and complimented me on how i bust ass when im there and that im easily one of the hardest worker outters (ha) there . he even went on to tell me i was one of (not "the" by any means ahaha) the strongest girls he's ever personally seen.
it was really cool

ok im done tooting now

I know what you are talking about, Joie. It is such a great compliment even if the intention was to hit on you. Ha! I don't blame him.

I know when I was busting my ass in the gym and lifting heavier and heavier weights, it meant a lot to me when guys who would lift obscene amounts would be impressed and voice it.

Great work getting stronger, but I've got to let off a bit of steam....

It's a pet peeve of mine when people brag about the leg press. Moving massive amounts of weight on the leg press does not require that much strength or development.

My recommendation: Learn to squat. Then brag

I finally decided to split my leg routine into two separate days, with one for quads and one for hamstrings/glutes. I'm amazed by how sore my hamstrings have been this week.

exactly!
i also had one guy a little while back tell me to "be careful" because he thought i would get too muscle-y because of the amount i was lifting! (i lolled a lil inside but smiled and said i would)

Diet-wise, today is not going well.

But I'm still at a deficit for the week.

Might not lose any this week, but I'm still working out all six days a week.

I've had a few weekends where I wasn't so strict about my diet, its all good. I just try to make sure I get in some extra cardio if I do cheat a little bit.

I only saw 3-6 women that lift free weights at LFF sadly. Getting hit on in the gym is pretty common. It sucks for men because we get it from both genders.

Here's a pretty good write up on the paleo diet: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/paleo_nutrition_improved

Eat this way. Strength train. Ensure that you are in a weekly negative calorie balance. Get in about 2-5hours of light-moderate physical activity beyond strength training. Profit in health and wellness.

So, cardio advice. What should a target heart rate be while doing cardio to best reap the rewards? I keep it closer to max than not. I don't hit my peak high for my age but I do get about 10 beats pm less than it. Is that cool, bad? should i go higher?

I just started telling people that my goal is to become a She-Hulk. It normally shuts them up. Or if I'm in a more serious mood, tell them I've been lifting for a year and a half and I don't think I'm oh-so-huge yet, so I'm not too worried. I try to subliminally plant the idea that lifting is a good thing, especially with the "I never lift anything over 5 pounds" type. I don't get why people are so quick to offer advice on your workouts ("You know you should be doing low weight, high rep stuff to tone and not get huge.") when they don't have much experience themselves.

I will sometimes ask guys to help me put 45-lb plates on a bar for deadlifts (with short arms that is really awkward for me to do by myself) and they usually seem to think I'm trying to hit on them. At least, until I actually pick it up. Then they seem a little scared.

On that note, I have only ever seen one other person do deadlifts at any gym outside of working with a personal trainer. That makes me sad. They are my favorite.

A few months ago I was lifting at the campus gym and some big black guy was taking for-ev-er on the leg press machine. Finally, when it looked like he was done, I asked him just to make sure... he said yeah then started to take the weights off. I told him, "No, that's ok, please leave those on."

He glared at me across the room when I was leg pressing the same amount he was.

I feel like the undergrad guys glare more if you lift around them versus being impressed and/or trying to hit on you. Or maybe it's just because I am all sweaty and they'd rather glare than hit on me.

Hahahahaha... Sorry Stein you would hate me even more if I posted the link for the red velvet brownies with white chocolate cream cheese frosting

For fat burning I try to be somewhere b/n 60-70% of my hr max

whoooot.....so i met my original work out goal this week and made it into the gym 3 times, running 3 miles each time then lifting. in case you were wondering i started out running a mile once or twice a week back in mid February (which is when i started going back tot the gym regularly). i would up my distance a half mile each week and this past week finally got to my goal of 3 miles 3 times a week. i'm going to keep it here for a few weeks and work on my time. Saturday I ran the 3 miles in 27 mins. I'd like to get to an avg of 8 min miles so I have to shave at least 3 mins off my 3 mi run. in other good news, weighed myself Saturday and posted a 179, that's 10lbs lighter then when i started. now just 14 more to go to meet my 165 goal weight.

Congrats on hitting your first set of goals. Why do you want to get down to 165? Is it a BMI measurement, body fat % or just a goal weight that you remember being at before and you want to get back to it?

After two weeks of losing 3lbs a week I've not lost 1lb this week!

Also, what kind of calorie deficit should someone shoot for a day? According to caloriecount.about.com I'm at least 1,000 calories deficit a day, but I read somewhere that it shouldn't be more than 1,000?!?!?!?! I'm taking in about 1,600 calories a day and working out 5 days a week...

^^ i think so. the doctors thought it was gluten.....well until my hands and toes started swelling when i consumed products with sulfite in it. so now i've been watching sulfite - but it's weird. even without eating sulfite, my body is still all out of whack. it's not normal i gain (like straight gain - do not fit in clothes) 5 pounds within a few hours and it doesn't go away.

mostly its a weight that i have been at before and was comfortable with my physique. its also an easy metric, but i do put more emphasis on appearance and body fat %. my goal BF % is 10% (i started at 19%). BMI is such bullshit!! according to BMI i should be 146lbs on the high side, 124lbs on he low side. if i weighted 146 lbs i would look like a sick Ethiopian. I would probably die before i got down to 124....that's just sick.

And I see lot more women in there than i would have thought which is awesome.

So here's the update:

This week I lost 1.5 kilos (3 lbs) and another 1/2 inch off my gut.

I also started the next phase of my workout program today. Holy crap I got my butt kicked. I'm going to try to do cardio tomorrow and see what happens. For those that know P90 (not P90X), I just upgraded to Sculpt 3-4 today. The jump also tripled the amount of squats I did and my legs were like jelly afterward. I'm pretty stoked about the upgrade.

I now weigh 217 lbs. I've not weighed this in probably... three or four years? I hovered around 230 for a long time before ballooning up to 250 lbs this past summer. Needless to say, 8.5 more kilos is the magic number for me to be under 200 lbs. (I'm only 5'10")

In other news - the fiance is starting to get bummed that I'm getting skinnier than her now. She wants to keep up, but she's still rehabbing a broken leg from late January so her weight loss isn't quite as fast. She's still losing weight and I'm personally totally excited about us being a hot fit couple.

Hurray health! (Sidenote - We should make a healthy food recipe thread)

Whut, I did dead lifts too

I'm starting to get back into the swing of working out again, but its hard to keep up the motivation lately. I wouldn't expect it, but its almost tougher to go out in the garage since I have my equipment available 24/7; its not like "shit I better go before the gym closes/the rush comes/etc"

Its odd to see women intimidated by the free weight section. I weighed 125-130lbs as a male when I first joined and I wasn't intimidated. In retrospect I do think my height helped.

I like the girl at NCSU the other night "is there a girls weight room?" . Some guy told her yes and she started to go look for it.......(not blonde)

I'm up to 193, about an 8 lb gain from when I started I know it's mostly muscle, because I'm not fat, and when I weighed this much before I was fat. Anyway, time to step it up and lose all of this extra pudge.

You should have punched him in the mouth and called him a bitch.

Girls:

If you want a killer body, you need to work out "like a dude". Heavy (relatively, of course you aren't as strong as the 250-lb dude who sweats dianabol) weights: as much as you can do for 6-10 reps or so. Compound-movement exercises (bench, squats, weighted lunges, deadlifts, pull-ups/lat pulls, rows, cleans, shoulder presses, etc.), not a bunch of dumbell side raises and tricep extensions....and for the love of God, stop wasting your time with those stupid 3-lb dumbells. You're not that weak...you need to be straining your ass off to get, say, 10 reps.

Cardio is needed too, of course...and lazily pedaling the stationary bike while reading a magazine is barely better than nothing.

If you want to look like you're in shape, you need to exercise like an athlete.

well, I've been hittin up the gym now for almost 2 months. Haven't seen any significant weight loss, but I figured that 2 times a week and with 2 other days running wasn't going to do much anyway. BUT, the amount I can lift in each exercise is going up, so I figure I am getting something done. started out benching 50 (i know, weakling), and now I'm doin 70. Started out barely curling 20, now I'm doing 40, same with overhead.

slowly figuring out what I can do with a leg press after I got away from a really bad machine. I could barely get off of the plate with 150 on it, but I went to the one across the gym and I can do 265 with a larger range of motion like it's nothing. The other one must be crappy or something.

I know my weight numbers are pathetic, but they are improvements, and that's all that matters to me. Hopefully I will someday be able to see my pecs, lol
