Yeah I'm curious to find out which teams should be ranked above Kansas.

Syracuse? They also got taken to the wire by some really shitty teams (William and Mary, Michigan, NC State) but managed to win each time.

Pittsburgh? Maybe, but they still have that loss.

San Diego State? LOL

I honestly don't get all the Singler All-American hype. He hasn't improved a bit since he was a sophomore. In fact his numbers are a bit worse this year.

Irving was well on his way to being one and Nolan Smith is, right now, far and away the most important player to the team and a sure-fire first team All American..

Singler is very good but he's always been a bit overrated imo. I knew he would never be a NPOY.

^not a true one. Kansas State in Kansas City and Oregon in Portland were the closest (and UNCG in Greensboro lol)

Syracuse has 2 wins against top 25 teams ND and MSU. Kansas has ONE top 25 win and that was against Memphis...
So yeah Syracuse should definitely be ranked higher.

I think Kansas is a damn good team I just also see that they have played a weak schedule so far and almost stumbled multiple times.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, he is definitely first team All-ACC and a player any team would love to have... maybe it's just Vitale that consistently hypes him up but I don't see him on that Sullinger, Nolan Smith, Kemba, Fredette level this year...

This is the problem with the ACC this year. If this is a vintage Maryland team they win this game by 15. Duke can play absolutely putrid and still win 13-14 games...

That and they are so loaded that a number of guys have to be ice cold for them to lose the three point shot. Even without Irving, Dawkins and Curry provide a big boost to that team.

True... but the conference is just plain easy this year for the #1 team. They don't have a single game left against a team currently ranked team (of course, until next poll comes out and UNC slides in inexplicably).

They'll slip up somewhere on the road I'm sure, but they can be off and win by double digits in most of these games. That wouldn't happen if you're going on the road to a Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan State, etc this year (or pick any three Big East teams).

Singler actually was the best player on the floor tonight, of course... right after I criticized him.

[Edited on January 9, 2011 at 9:59 PM. Reason : V lol, I meant any of the top teams -- didn't feel like listing them]

At least write off the Seton Hall/Depaul/USF/Providence tier (worse than the bottom 4 of the ACC with the possible exception of Wake. Plus I feel like they have yet to prove they can match up to a team with solid, skilled big men on their game. Kansas come to mind. Syracuse if their bigs improve. In conference their toughest matchups may honestly be NC State and FSU, even if there are inexperience/consistency issues in the backcourt.

Totally off topic, but Seton Hall was supposed to be a NCAA Tournament team with Pope and Hazell.

We joke around "NC State shit" a lot but Pope was the guy who collapsed last year and Hazell was injured this year early. And then when he finally got healthy, he got shot on Christmas!

Saw that this was originally published on Jan 6th. But I haven't seen it posted yet. So

Quote :
"The casual fan could be forgiven for wondering if there's an ACC bylaw stipulating that there can be only one great team per year in this league.

The conference has produced the last two national champions: the Duke Blue Devils last year and the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2009. But why does it seem like lately those two legendary programs have taken turns succeeding in March? It's been seven years since the ACC put two teams in the Elite Eight -- and beyond the league's big two, NCAA tournament success has been notably elusive the last few years. Over the past four tournaments, no ACC team besides Duke or North Carolina has reached the Sweet 16. In other words, while the league always has a serious national title contender, the ACC has struggled to give that contender some company in March.

Coming into this year, it looked like that was going to change. Duke was ranked No. 1 in the preseason, and the Blue Devils were joined in the top 10 by a resurgent North Carolina. Also ranked in the preseason top 25 was Virginia Tech, while the likes of Florida State, North Carolina State and Maryland all lurked in the "Also receiving votes" small print.

What a difference nine weeks make. Duke is still ranked No. 1, of course, but as my colleague Drew Cannon pointed out the other day at Basketball Prospectus, the Blue Devils, incredibly, don't have a single ranked opponent remaining on their schedule. Talk about a crowded middle. Throw a stick at the ACC and you'll hit no fewer than eight teams with four losses.

Is there a team somewhere in that crowded middle that can make Duke break a sweat? One that could even live to see the second weekend in this year's NCAA tournament? Let's review the top four candidates.

Maryland Terrapins (10-4)
The Terrapins may not get much respect from pollsters, but Ken Pomeroy's computer is more favorably impressed, ranking Gary Williams' team a respectable No. 13 nationally. Then again it's hard for humans or even a computer to know what to make of Maryland right now. The Terps have lost four games -- to Pitt, Illinois, Temple and Boston College -- by a combined 20 points. The problem in terms of evaluating this team is that the rest of their schedule has been filled with blowouts against the likes of Colgate and NJIT. On paper Maryland has an outstanding defense, one that makes life miserable for opponents foolish enough to attempt 2-point shots. And if 6-foot-10 sophomore Jordan Williams could make 70 or even 65 percent of his free throws instead of 50, we'd be looking at one serious force of nature in terms of efficiency. In the next 10 days, the Terps play Duke and Villanova. We'll know more about them after those games.

North Carolina (10-4)
The last time we checked in on the Tar Heels, we found that Roy Williams' team simply wasn't scoring enough dadgum points, as the coach might say. Since then UNC has shown glimmers of respectability on offense, scoring right at a point per trip in its close win against Kentucky and in its close loss to Texas. Moreover the Heels' upcoming schedule -- with road games at Virginia and Georgia Tech and home games against Virginia Tech and Clemson -- could plausibly result in this team getting off to a 4-0 start in ACC play. But the concerns that everyone voiced with respect to UNC in November aren't necessarily dead and buried just yet. Beyond Tyler Zeller, it's hard to find a reliable workhorse in this offense. John Henson has been outstanding on D, and indeed he's excellent on the offensive glass, but his 35 percent free throw shooting certainly gives opposing defenses a handy option on any given possession. And much heralded freshman Harrison Barnes is, at best, still rounding into form, having made just 40 percent of his 2-pointers and 32 percent of his 3-pointers. The Tar Heels, as always, have talent, but whether their stars will align in a way to produces points over the next two months is the question at hand in Chapel Hill.

Virginia Tech Hokies (9-4)
The Hokies return just about everyone from a team that barely missed out on last year's NCAA tournament. Usually that's a recipe for improvement, but to this point in the season Seth Greenberg's team, rather puzzlingly, has stayed more or less exactly where it was in 2009-10: a very good defense and a so-so offense. Malcolm Delaney is still Malcolm Delaney, logging a ton of minutes and doing a little of everything. But with too many turnovers and too few offensive boards, Virginia Tech simply isn't getting enough bites at the apple on offense.

Florida State Seminoles (11-4)
If Virginia Tech presents a case of split personality in terms of a strong defense and a less-strong offense, Florida State is downright Jekyll and Hyde. The Seminoles might have the best defense in the country. So far this year, opponents have made 29 percent of their 3s and 39 percent of their 2s against the long and rangy likes of Chris Singleton and Xavier Gibson. The problem for Leonard Hamilton is that this may also be the worst offense in the ACC. While FSU crashes the offensive glass with abandon, it turns the ball over on 24 percent of its possessions and shoots with average accuracy, even when it does hang onto the rock.

The Blue Devils are winning the ACC (that's going out on a limb, truly), but they may get some competition from -- or even lose a game to -- mysterious Maryland or those talented Tar Heels. Stranger things have happened. But right now it looks like the ACC's recent pattern of producing one elite team per year is likely to continue in 2011.
"

Funny considering the links a couple of pages ago where N.C. State was mentioned 2nd a couple of times.
AND no love for us beating them last year with extremely less talented team.
