Upgrading from 7100 to ultimate from technet. Will see how it goes because the previous install has been 99% flawless since July.

So, if going from home xp to pro 7 do I need to call or can I just dload the pro and do a custom install (which you do anyway RIGHT)?
10/25/2009 12:23:10 AM
^^ considereing it was a prerelease OS and I was trying to use a 7+ yr old tv tuner card that hasn't been supported by the manufacturer in a few years, it was perfect outside of that.

So, what is wrong with this? Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL102209&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL102209-_-SoftwareOperatingSystems-_-L0B-_-32116754 for satisfying my RAM utilization needs?

so if I do a dual boot, I'm thinking I'll do 4 partitions (2 for OSs, 1 for files, 1 for programs). How can I get everything, from both OSs, to point to the proper partition (so files from either OS go to the files partition and programs run from the programs partition)? I've been googling (and I'm new to dual booting) but haven't found anything. [Edited on October 25, 2009 at 5:28 PM. Reason : m]

not sure about you being able to do lots of partitions for different versions of Windows, because Windows expects to run from the last partition on your drive. you can probably do a separate partition for files, but most windows dual booting comes in the form of multiple versions installed on the same partition. what you described works better with entirely different OSs, like linux and windows.
10/25/2009 6:09:20 PM
i've had separate versions of windows on separate partitions without any problems, but i'm not exactly sure what he is asking
10/25/2009 6:49:04 PM
yeah, i guess it takes a little work. not something i'd recommend for a dual boot n00b, though.
10/25/2009 7:02:04 PM
is this on a laptop? or can you just stick another HDD in it? Be easier.
10/25/2009 7:14:55 PM
^6 so i've got an unlegit copy of xp - and i bought the student copy of 7 (that you have to dl, not the disc)this shit gonna work for me?
10/25/2009 8:39:50 PM
the 2 partitions for OSes and 1 for files is not a problem.I'm not sure that you could have one partition for programs that are installed in two separate OSes. You'd have to install the programs in each OS to the same location and I'm just not sure it would work. You could always try. Depending on the OS and the software though, the install folder may be different for different OSes, especially if one os is 32bit and one is 64bit and the software has 32 and 64 bit versions.Typically you'll have a partition for each OS and the programs for that OS are installed on its partition. Then you can save all your files to a data partition so that you can wipe the OS partition without having to worry about backing stuff up off it beforehand.

^^ see my link above, it should work just fine.

Need some help. Installed 7 home pro tonight. I have an ext with everything from my old setup. The programs do not seem to be there now though - when I go to the folder on the external they show as shortcuts, not the files.I HAD Microsoft Office on XP, now I do not obviously. How can I get this back? I'm okay with d/loading all of my old programs that are free....Also, before and after the install it appears my HD has right about the same free memory. I was under the impression this would be a lot less since all of my programs should have been deleted with the install?Am I missing something?
10/25/2009 10:36:45 PM
so you did an upgrade, right? not a complete install?
10/25/2009 10:44:11 PM
When given the choice of upgrade or custom, I chose custom per the instructions I printed from the "upgrading from windows XP to Windows 7" link on Windows site.
10/25/2009 10:47:47 PM
^^^ Try C: > Windows.old[Edited on October 25, 2009 at 10:48 PM. Reason : b]
10/25/2009 10:48:25 PM
Well thats what really pisses me off, the instructions also say if you dont have enough memory to install to delete that. I did not, so its deleted... I realize I cant get that folder back, but I didnt think I would have this issue (had I been able to install it would not have been deleted).
10/25/2009 10:50:57 PM
you don't save all your programs with custom install, you will have to reinstall them. in-place upgrade would have kept everything in place but requires going to the same version or ultimate.
10/25/2009 10:52:53 PM
Okay, yeah I am okay with that... still a few things I dont understand. How am i going to get M$ Office back when it came on my computer (no discs) and what about the programs I paid for like security/anti-virus?Why are the programs not showing up on my external hard drive like they were, now they are shortcuts? Why is my HD as big as it was prior to 7.... seems like with so much missing (programs) it would be smaller.
10/25/2009 11:01:07 PM
i'll let others answer the questions about free space and office and so forth. i just wanted to add that you probably can either contact the manufacturer of your AV software, or you could just go with one of the several excellent free ones out there now. microsoft's got their own "Security Essentials" now, so there's not really much need to buy AV anymore.
10/25/2009 11:11:46 PM
Okay, d/loading essentials now, thanks for the heads up. Any other suggested d/loads?

^yeh, since I'll be running Vista x86 and W7 x64. I've been told that there shouldn't be any program compatibility issues, but before I completely switch over, I'd like to keep a x86 OS just in case there are any issues (I run some in-house made programs, of which I'm not sure if they'll run in W7 and/or x64.so what about having each OS point towards the same files? just change the target location in my documents, etc? [Edited on October 27, 2009 at 9:03 AM. Reason : ./]
10/27/2009 9:02:10 AM
That would work but here's some advice.Make sure the Win7 partition is FIRST on the disk and the Vista partition is second. This way, when you decide to get rid of vista and want to expand your win7 partition to fill the entire disk, you're not fucked. If I were you though I'd try with Win7 only and then if something doesn't work (everything should work, 32 bit or not, at least when run in "compatibility mode" for vista or xp or whatever) install vista on a separate partition or as a VM.
10/27/2009 12:13:21 PM
I'd just run VM's for Vista/XP/whatever else inside of Win7. Hella lot easier (and more useful) than multi-booting.I believe Win7 Ultimate comes with VirtualPC on the machine (that XP VM runs on it, but you can run anything else as well).
10/27/2009 3:28:39 PM
^^,^thanks for the advice. I'll look into running Vista/XP as a VM (I'm not familiar with this; only with the concept of dual booting).
10/27/2009 3:47:02 PM
double post! [Edited on October 27, 2009 at 3:48 PM. Reason : .]
if you have pro or ultimate you can download a copy of virtual PC and an XP VM from microsoft. (google windows 7 xp mode). Its kinda cool cause after you install an app inside the vm, you can run it by itself outside the vm as if it were in windows 7. The same way you run apps in paralells and vmware fusion in osx.
10/27/2009 3:51:05 PM
can you feasibly game in a VM? i've never tried because it's never seemed that it would perform as well as it would natively... but have no data to back it up.
10/27/2009 3:56:46 PM
^i know on a Mac only direct X 7 was supported but the new VMware Fusion that just came out now supports up to direct x 9 so that in itself is a hindering factor regardless of performance.
10/27/2009 4:08:56 PM
Can you still buy the educational version of 7 Pro? All I see is Home Premium; I don't see the little yellow box that used to have the link for Pro.

I've been pretty happy with the install process of windows 7 and i only have the RC. they did get their shit together this time around. I'd say its as user friendly and easy to do as Mac OS X installs.
10/27/2009 4:52:19 PM
mine took a lot longer than 20 minutes but i figured that's because i was upgrading and not doing a clean install
10/27/2009 4:52:30 PM
getting ready to start my install.... hope everything goes well!lol, almost forgot to backup my files from today and switch to my new HDD ..[Edited on October 27, 2009 at 5:41 PM. Reason : ,]

Mine took 19 hours but it worked like a champ so I'm not complaining (and it was a RC->Retail supervised migration which apparently is an internal only thing).
10/27/2009 5:32:58 PM
thanks i found the edu pro version. my problem was i didn't login to see the yellow box, just saw the home screen.it says it's a pro upgrade. do i need to have my XP or Vista discs to verify im legitimately upgrading? Or is the upgrade honor system like snow leopard?
10/27/2009 5:45:22 PM
looks a few posts up, or maybe the last page. apparently there's a way to make it the honor system
