Okay, I admit it. I too am unemployed. I am back in school... AGAIN. I am a textile designer. Of course with so many mills closed, its kind of work on your own. However, I am having good luck on Linked-in. People are finding me who know people I know. They are in high-end fabrics which I like. Perhaps it will pay to be an artist in the long run. I also made a contact in India. That's not going to do a lot of good for folks in the US who produce my products... I did have one great interview recently, but I could not move at this point given my husband's position and my son. I tried to get them to consider remote conferencing, etc. That's too scary. My last job I wove in Maine, designed here, had an employee and a sales rep in Detroit and went to see customers in California and Mexico. Until the automotive market crashed, we were doing great work. It's hard to convince companies to consider alternative forms of employing people. They are afraid. In the meantime, yes, I am volunteering everywhere - craft guild, schools, national parks, writing grants for the theater. I guess I better learn to grow my own food...

had a phone interview yesterday, got the rejection email today. rejection emails dont phase me but just the crazy fast speed of this one surprised me.
3/23/2010 11:45:42 AM
The nicest rejection letter I've ever received was for a job I had applied to with the government of the Cayman Islands. It wasn't necessarily a rejection, but rather a hand written letter thanking me for sending in my application and letting me know they had forgotten to remove the job listing from the website.
3/23/2010 11:58:29 AM
^ I got one of those letters as well. There's a civil engineering group in wilmington, NC that was at one of the engineering fairs. I sent them a resume and a cover letter and they sent me back a signed letter (on nice paper) saying they apologized and would keep my resume on file feed my resume to the shredder. It was pretty polite of them.

I'm honestly debating grad school because I'm having no luck at this job search thing. I'd always wanted to do grad school, but not so quickly after undergrad. Took about 5 months off from life after graduation last year and now the 4-5 months of job search fail is starting to depress me.

I've got a job I applied to that shows my application status for that particular job going from "Active" to "Hold" seemingly every other day. It's driving me fucking nuts because I really want it and it feels like they're just teasing me.
3/23/2010 6:04:27 PM
I'm sick of interviewing. I hope I just went on the last one for a long, long while.
3/24/2010 9:44:25 AM
I have a part time meteorology job now and I have been sending out NWS applications which is probably the most annoying process ever. I am tired of job hunting for sure and I wish I could just get started already. The problem is there are 3 and 4 times the usual applicants because of the economy and these are government positions.
3/24/2010 1:46:13 PM
^^ Yeah, I get really frustrated too. It especially sucks when you are a perfect match for the position, have a good interview, and still get turned down. I've had 2 interviews where I was one of two front runners, but the other candidate had contacts on the team. I hate dealing with staffing companies, but I haven't had much luck applying on company websites. The Select Group has hooked me up with 3 interviews, 2 of which were permanent positions. I'm currently waiting to hear back about a 6 month renewing contract doing software testing.
3/24/2010 2:11:15 PM
^ Staffing agencies annoy me. I had a lovely experience with one a couple of weeks ago."So I saw your resume in our database. Aerospace engineering? That means you know about composites, right?""Well, I've used them before. Plenty of hands-on experience but not much analysis.""Great, I'll send your stuff right over."..."I sent your stuff to the company. I set up a phone interview for tomorrow. Make sure you have your cover letter and resume out so you can refer to it. I don't think I made any changes to your cover letter, but I shifted some things around in your resume."WTF? In his process of "shifting things around" he managed to change the spelling of my name and repeat the misspelling three times in the packet of information he sent to the company (wrong: Steven - right: Stephen). And he managed to screw up a copy-paste procedure in my resume so my computer skills and stuff are stuck in the middle of my resume under employment history... "Job X 2000-2004: Did work stuff. Solved problems. Acted smart. Experienced in Solidworks, Matlab, etc..."And in the end, I wasn't even remotely qualified for the job. They wanted a good materials engineer. I guess it was good "practice" at how to fumble my way through an interview for a job that I shouldn't have ever applied to. You know, in case I need to hone that skill for use in future interviews...

I hate HR people in General. This guy emails me about a position with a Electrical Construction Company is DC. First Email: Can you send me your resume in ms format.Me: sent resumeSecond Email: What was your GPA in College?Me: sent GPAThird Email: Please send me your transcript.Me: sent transcriptFourth Email: Can you obtain security clearance?Me: YesFifth Email: Willing to move to DC?Me: yesMe: sent follow up emailHim: We want someone with a degree in electrical engineering not construction engineering.Me: WHY THE FUCK DID YOU WASTE MY TIME!!
3/25/2010 1:24:22 AM
^and what was his response?
3/25/2010 6:56:06 AM
I'm convinced some companies hr departments just post things for shear amusement to waste people's time and to make it look like they, themselves are necessary in their own company.I've applied to places where postings appear and disappear within days. Some just get removed completely after I spend like 45 mins filling out their convoluted application. Also, I'm severely annoyed at how a lot of companies use the same job application software but you can't cross-reference your data across applications. Why can't I create a master account at some career company like Taleo and then be able to farm out my data to every company I want apply to?!
3/25/2010 6:57:34 AM
I am moving positions finally after kind of looking for a year on and off. My boss gave us what I saw as the "WE'VE HIT AN ICE BERG. BUT THINGS ARE OK." Speech. I got out asap after that. I got 4 offers in 16 interviews. Not sure how many referrals and resume sends I have. I had a lot of luck going through contracting firms but I wanted full time and contracting firms fuck you generally with the pay ($60/hr paid then they paid $30/hr to the employee or $45 if you are a good negotiator). The job I took I did not find through a staffing agency. Good luck, its frustrating and I'm sick of having a dry cleaning bill
3/25/2010 11:36:36 AM
I'll be joining this club in the next 30 days or so by choiceDrinks all around!
3/25/2010 11:50:56 AM
3/25/2010 1:19:55 PM
Why would you join the club by choice?
3/25/2010 1:51:45 PM
I've grown tired of my current situation and would like to have fun this summer before exploring new options later in the year
3/25/2010 2:19:44 PM
^^They could have lied to you. I got to look at our accounting once by accident. An account manager emailed all the people looking here what the rates were. Was very enlightening. $4/hr is reasonable.
3/25/2010 2:35:44 PM
if you have your BS degree, can code in C/C++ for linux apps, know the basics of networking, and willing to relocate, PM me. Our company is looking.
3/25/2010 2:50:25 PM
^^ Oh, they didn't mean for me to find out. They accidentally e-mailed me the wrong rate. I was slightly peeved when I found out I would not be getting $33/hr

I just bombed the shit out of a technical interview over the phone. Every question was networking or coding related, when I haven't really done either of those things. I spoke for an hour with the HR rep and then an hour with the hiring manager, all which went quite well. However, the technical interview went like this.Him: What is blah blah blah. Me: I am not familiar with that. Rinse, wash, repeat. I wish the hiring manager had at least told me and we could of ended it there. To make it worse the HR lady accidentally sent me an email reminding one of the other candidates about his call. I proceeded to look him up and he is much much more qualified. Now I wait for the formal "Thanks for your interest in our company blah blah blah blah blah"
3/25/2010 6:17:03 PM
Sounds like the phone interview I had with Cisco. Guy busted out pki encryption and a bunch other network security stuff and said I was wasting his time. Orly? You found my resume online and called me. Nowhere did I list any network security experience. Now who is wasting whose time?
3/25/2010 7:49:08 PM
^ Who interviewed you out of curiosity, and what group at Cisco. I know they like to find something you don't know and continue on it and ask you how do you think it would work etc, but if that is not what he was doing then no clue.Just like any company we have some douchebags.
3/25/2010 8:16:17 PM
I dunno, when I interviewed with Cisco, they asked me stuff I didn't know, but they wanted to know how I would react to that. They didn't harp on me about that. It was serious, but positive. They even helped me out on a certain portion of the technical interview I wasn't familiar with so that I could give them a complete answer. It was nice.
3/25/2010 8:58:48 PM
^3 exactly. This guy didn't say I was wasting time, but it was all in his voice even though he was being quite cordial. I think the worst part of it was when the hiring manager called him and when he switched back over the tech guy said "well we can wrap this up. is there anything you want to know". i imagine the conversation went like this manager: so hows he doing. guy: eh, okay. doesn't know a lot of networking. manager: don't waste your time we have the other guy in 30.I'll post back with the update tomorrow. even if they do bring me in i imagine it is only to have a back up. the other guy is even local and wouldn't need relocation assistance.
3/25/2010 9:47:32 PM
IF ANYONE WANTS TO MAKE MONEY THIS WEEK:so i did some temp work back in February and they wanted me to continue but i told them i really wanted to start my own company and i could maybe do it in my spare time telecommuting. well, that didn't work out so well so they've given me about a week before they just forget the whole thing. i asked them if they minded if i outsource and they were open to it but they still need to finish up by the end of next friday.this job requires nothing but internet and your own computer. we can meetup at starbucks or something and i can explain it in less than 30 min. you're basically just mining for usable contacts through whatever means necessary and i talked them into $1 per contact, i'm not sure what the maximum is but they originally wanted about 700 more contacts than i was currently able to get in my sparetime (i really doubt you could get 700 good ones in a week unless you literally spent 40 hrs on it).pm for more details or let me know if you want to meetup, i'm free anytime tomorrow between 2:30-4:30 or before 4:30pm on Saturday
3/26/2010 12:41:22 AM
3/26/2010 7:32:13 AM
lol by which i means sometimes you can't just google them, you have to find an employee on linked in, or do some deeper research
3/26/2010 9:59:39 AM
i just got the formal rejection letter. They stated they will not be moving forward because they do not believe me to be technically strong enough for this role, which sounds insulting. I'm very technical, but simply not on this subject matter. Regardless there is a 6week training program and I imagine I could easily be brought up to speed.alas...
3/26/2010 11:33:24 AM
phone interview at 1pm. supposedly, the person interviewing me already understands I'm not super experienced and is OK with that. yea, well, we'll see.
3/26/2010 11:35:06 AM
3/26/2010 11:36:42 AM
Well, this was more of a "phone screen." He asked two questions and that was it. What the fuck is the point in that? You already knew the answers to the questions you asked????
3/26/2010 1:50:06 PM
Just got my letter of regret informing me that i didnt get another job...
3/29/2010 1:44:19 PM
So how many jobs have you guys applied to? after about two months of unemployment i'm at 60. sadly these same 60 are being reposted so i'll likely have the same 60 a month out.
3/29/2010 3:05:35 PM
This girl.I live in a very competitive county when it comes to working for the school system. But I'm also failing to get hired for private assistant jobs/tutoring/daycare/etc. Probably going to end up getting my master's degree in education because my education background doesn't qualify me to work as an elementary school teacher, despite the fact that all of my work experience is in elementary schools and high schools.I'm also apparently not qualified for secretarial work for some reason.
3/29/2010 3:53:01 PM
Yeah, being over qualified can be a bitch. But you can't blame companies for not hiring you because you're over qualified; at the first opportunity you are going to be out of there.

the thought of trying to find work in greenville is depressing as hellI go to craigslist under eastern nc->jobs->software/QA/DBA/etc: for the last 3 weeks, the only posts are by the same dude looking for a "computer reprogrammer" to pirate some software. Not one single legitimate job posting...FOR ALL OF EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA.
