Not so much "competitive", as "capable".I don't think my abilities would be suited for a legit bike, anyways.

The Rock 'n Roll series is coming to Raleigh. Are they taking over RunRaleigh? http://runrocknroll.competitor.com/raleighI think I'll do it, if only because I want to be cool and do as many RnRs next year and get one of the big special medals

Knee pain seems to have isolated . Its mostly in the upper IT and moves down to the side of the knee when it gets irritated. Now at least I have a general idea of where to tape, doing a general knee support seemed to cause problems. Doing a standing cross leg stretch seemed to help a lot. I think I got lucky this time in that I'm not totally disabled, but not sure if I can finish the run. I could do 13 this weekend with problems toward the end. Taking this week mostly off somehow made the first 6 of that run really hard endurance wise.. ugh. I hope they do that Raleigh Half Ironman again next year. After this race I want to do less distance, work on speed, and start on tris. The super long runs are actually pleasant (mostly) but the time commitment to just running is pretty nuts.

So running in Umstead is the gold standard of distance training.Who knew.
3/4/2013 3:22:55 PM
Anyone else doing the Tobacco Road half?I'll be there despite my fucking IT band injury.
3/4/2013 3:59:19 PM
i REALLY wanna do the wine and dine half marathon in disney world in the fall
3/5/2013 2:03:54 PM
I'm trying to decide on a destination half to do this fall, I may put that ^ on the list of maybesI was thinking about the OBX half (same weekend) or the City of Oaks Half
3/5/2013 2:12:40 PM
OBX is a fun one
3/5/2013 2:28:03 PM
RunRaleigh half, Minka.

What is the ideal post-marathon workup procedure?IE - how many days "off" before doing any kind of running (or even weightlifting / crosstraining)?
3/5/2013 5:10:07 PM
1st week - nothing2nd week - 3x3 mile, 4 mile "long run"3rd week - 4x3-4 miles, 10 mile long run4th week - 4/5/speedwork/3, 13 mile long run5th - normal / 15Building back up to a 2nd marathon, 15 -16 - 17 - (8 w/ hill sprints) - 19 - 15 - 21 - taper weeksDid some crosses on the off week.. nothing heavy. If you're in good shape I'd maybe remove the first week. [Edited on March 5, 2013 at 5:35 PM. Reason : .][Edited on March 5, 2013 at 5:35 PM. Reason : forgot 13]

Damn shin splints
3/5/2013 6:03:40 PM
Anyone have any good recommendations for compression socks?
3/13/2013 8:30:20 PM
I know a lot of people who trust in Zensah. Make sure you measure your calves and if you're on the cusp of sizes choose the bigger size. I was between medium and small and went with small and after an hour or two I ended up with pain deep in my calf that took weeks of massaging, rolling, and stretching to go away. Twice this happened to me, once while wearing them as I ran and again when I wore them post run for recovery. Are you icing your shins? Have you changed shoes? What kind of terrain are you running on? Do you change it up between road hard, gravel, and trail? Does it hurt a lot while you run or later as you walk around or is it just tender to the touch?Sorry for the 20 questions lol [Edited on March 13, 2013 at 9:46 PM. Reason : ][Edited on March 13, 2013 at 9:56 PM. Reason : Mine were sleeve not socks]
3/13/2013 9:45:21 PM
Compression socks bought from a medical supply place for $3 have the same potential benefit that a $50 pair with a cool logo on it has. That is to say, no appreciable benefit if worn during a training event or race. A small benefit if worn after the event as a recovery help. They are largely a fad, and a goofy looking one at that. First day running since I ended a run at the 1 mi mark grimmacing in pain from shin splits (ran 5 mi 2 days earlier).Even at a "slow pace" ran 2 mi in 20 min flat with only some discomfort. Will up to 3.1 mi tomorrow or Friday and hopefully be back on track for my 10K that's beginning of April.[Edited on March 13, 2013 at 10:00 PM. Reason : l]

Taking at least 2 more weeks off ex post marathon.Probably only do halfs or less the remainder of the year. Wouldn't mind doing a relay, but for now I'll just keep it to 5Ks.
3/13/2013 11:08:12 PM
Ran my first 5K "race" of the season a couple of weeks ago. It was only the second time I''ve ran outside too.The race was on a Friday morning and designed to be small (plus it was only $9). Well I was only one to registar. I ran it just like I would any other race, but had no competition. Ran a 20:49, which I was really happy with and is a good baseline to start the year. I just wish I would have had some competition to push me.Hoping for a sub 20min 5K this year. The first mile was on pace for sub-20, but I got about 10-20 secs slower each mile.

Doing my first half tomorrow. Tobacco road.

Sub 4 @ shamrock Good PTs are a godsend. My left IT flared up last Sunday on mile 9 of a 10. between tape ice and some massage kept that shit away until post race. Heart rate kept below 147 (my zone 2 I think) 95% of the run.Reading tww in a tub with a quart of chocolate milk haha

I need some help with trouble shooting....Soooo... I prefer to wear Brooks Adrenaline for trail running. I have been running with Brooks for about 2 years. In the past I have switch from Addias to Sacony to Brooks. I have a thin heal and a thick toe box so narrow shoes are bad for me. A few months ago I noticed that the bottom of my feet (the toe box) was starting to hurt really bad after my 3 or 4 mile mark and eventually my toes start going numb. I had my Brooks for almost 8 months so I decided that it was probably time for a new pair. The new pair was just another version of the Adrenalines I normally get plus I got the lock bungee cord shoe laces so my laces wont come untied when I am running (which happened often). I love them too! My feet are still hurting after about mile marker 3 - 4. And after 7.5 of that pain, I was about to throw my shoes into the creek. Any suggestions as to what might be causing these pains? I just want to know the 125.00 I am putting into shoes isnt also causing my foot pain.
3/17/2013 4:22:46 PM
3:51:17I think I would do another one day. Is this going to work in the same manner as women's feelings towards getting pregnant again? I'm assuming once the pain fades I'll mostly just remember the good experience.
3/17/2013 6:45:36 PM
Yeah. All of my endurance events have had me hurting and swearing to not do another and after a month or so I'm thinking about the next one.
3/17/2013 6:48:32 PM
Still limping, but I would be a sucker and sign up for a third now. The upside is you can kind of redo training from months ago and all the training runs are just..better. I waited 4 weeks before doing a 13 mile long run.. just slowly worked up. The downside is I go with people who do halfs and get me to drink way too much. I will never do a full again in Vegas. I can get shitfaced and do okay on a half.. some runs are too big to shoot for a PR anyway. ^^^ Look at wear patterns on your shoe. My best guess never having bottom of foot pain is you could be forefoot striking too hard and its adding up. I had top of foot pain when I tried forefoot striking - comparatively though my feet were/are very weak. It happened pretty suddenly when running about that distance.May want to get someone to look at how you run. If its really acting up just see a sports PT.
3/17/2013 10:59:05 PM
Did the Wrightsville beach half yesterday. Ran it in 2:23 which I think is pretty good considering I didn't do any training and had a 5 minute wait for a port-o-john around mile 8. Gonna work on my time through the spring and get it below 2 hours.
3/18/2013 11:58:26 AM
I'm on Week 2 of Couch To 5k, can I post in this thread?
3/18/2013 12:03:10 PM
Only if you finish it That's how I got started, and got 2 friends on that this month. It works, though I did run a super super slow 5k. Biggest factor imo is not skipping a single day. There will be days that suck, but as long as you do the mileage (even if you walk a bit) that's fine. Even on my worst days I feel better after the run (beginning still sucks ass but its the business)
3/18/2013 4:12:57 PM
My first day sucked (think it's because I ran next to a busy street), but every other day after that has been great. I'm looking forward to running at lunch today.
3/19/2013 9:18:42 AM
Welcome to the club! Stay safe on those busy roads! When I first did c25k I was running on roads without sidewalks and even parking lots of strip malls (and back behind the stores) because I really didn't know of any other place or way to get in the miles near where I lived. After meeting local runners in the area though I found out there were paved and non-paved running trails pretty much everywhere just a short driving distance from my apartment and one right outside my work.
3/19/2013 9:28:13 AM
Ran on the Crabtree Creek greenway between Wake Forest and Raleigh Rd. There's a ramp at Capital Blvd that I want to burn to the ground. I'm not really training to run competitively, I just want to get my endurance up so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. Still felt great afterwards.
3/19/2013 2:25:33 PM
I just got started on c25k but have been mostly running on the treadmill I live close to the American Tobacco Trail so I'm gonna hit that up soon. One thing is, I'm flat-footed. Is there a certain model of shoes thats ideal for flat-footed runners? [Edited on March 19, 2013 at 5:01 PM. Reason : ]

Week 3 Day 1 complete. It wasn't as bad of a jump as I thought it was going to be. Feels great.
3/25/2013 1:31:57 PM
Ice baths.Anyone here do them? I thought I read once that there was a twwer that uses ice baths after runs? I was wondering at how many miles do you ice bath after and then for how many minutes? It always sounded kind of masochistic to me, but now I'm thinking after some hard long runs in training, maybe it might be helpful.

alright lucy... i'm coming back down to disney for the wine and dine half to commemorate my 30th birthday

Wouldn't be surprised if that record is shattered today...Servers were gridlocked for what seemed like forever last year....Such a fun race though. Amazing crowd support.[Edited on March 27, 2013 at 9:21 AM. Reason : ^^ ah, someone else gets it!]

10.2 miles today, & yesterday, Lake Johnson ... great weather... Now I've earned 1 tub of B&J pistachio, and strawberries & cream
3/30/2013 7:17:19 PM
10.38 miles this morning. Ran faster than I ever have before at that distance, all the extra miles I've been doing is paying off. I'll be closing out March with 100 miles for the month
3/31/2013 12:08:23 AM
MCM is the opposite of what I'd ever desire from any race.Too many people that are doing it just to tell other people that they did it. The "sport" of it is watered down by the marketing / expectations / social aspect.Easily one of the most overrated races in the nation. Also, what BigHitSunday said, more or less:
