jbtilley:This might be of some use. This is the post years ago where I switched up my string setup for my C-Standard guitars.

santa is coming soon. any suggestions for a tremolo pedal if i'm into the choppy helicopter sound like in these exampleshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpoOjoiYcWYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7oiWkaMEA8i think kevin shields used a boss tr-2 at one point, but i dunno if that's what he's got on "new you"

I know its an annoying question but, how much are you willing to spend?I'm Krallum and I approved this message.
12/2/2014 11:16:15 AM
santa is spending the money, so I don't care but maybe something in the $100-150 range? don't wanna ask someone to shell out $400 on some crazy boutique shit

^^^ The Kevin Shields trem is the PN-2, not the TR-2. They were only made briefly and are expensive-ish (100-200), though they do rule. The TR-2 is a perfectly acceptable trem, but it doesn't get super choppy, and the rate range leaves something to be desired. The only basic trem I've ever really been satisfied with is the Voodoo Lab 4-knob.
12/2/2014 6:33:25 PM
^ just out of curiosity, what else beyond the level of basic?
12/3/2014 7:21:56 PM
The only two I really like are the Cusack Tap-a-Whirl and the killer one, the ZVex Super Seek Trem. If you can imagine it, the SST can do it. The Cusack provides a ton of options, but they're not limitless like the SST. Too many pedals are obsessed with getting the time just right and dedicate knobs and switches to tap divisions. To me, the whole point of flexibility in a trem is to provide nuance in waveform, not speed.

anyone play heavier stuff and want an ESP LTD M-350? it's a really nice guitar (neck thru design) but I haven't touched it in years because I've been playing exclusively acoustic guitar and mandolin.I'm thinking of trying to get a Strat and getting back into some electric stuff.

^^ re: the pn-2, is the pan mode worth using if you don't have 2 amps?
12/6/2014 12:17:38 PM
If you don't have two amps, it doesn't do anything. You have to use both outputs for pan mode.

So my wife just surprised me with an Ibanez Artcore AS93 for my 40th birthday...I've been playing for almost 30 years, but I haven't owned an electric guitar since I was 18.I don't want to drop a lot of cash on an amp, nor do I want an amp that will shake the neighbors' houses.I found this on amazon... What do y'all think of the Apogee Jam (http://www.amazon.com/Apogee-JAM-96k-Professional-Quality/dp/B00H02C9TG)?I just want something I can play w/ headphones on that gives me lots of options with sound.I pretty much play blues, jerry garcia, dickey betts, and slide guitar.

I've never had either one, but:http://www.amazon.com/Line-Spider-IV-15-Amplifier/dp/B002GYWBIM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1433838711&sr=8-3orhttp://www.amazon.com/Peavey-Vypyr-VIP-Instrument-Amplifier/dp/B00B5OY84Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433838868&sr=8-1A modeling amp might give you some sound options. Granted it probably isn't as quality as dedicated effects but there are lots of options for cheap.

The models in Garageband aren't terrible, so a Jam would be good if that's all you're looking to do. That requires always being connected to an iPhone/iPod, though. You might look into an original Line6 Pod or Pocket Pod; they'd be more versatile and can be had used for under $50.

Has anyone tried the Bias Amp/FX setups?

unplanned but got a new guitar for the first time in many years yesterday.Ibanez Talman. I had been on the lookout for a tele recently with the intent to just buy one in the next few months. I ran across this yesterday when I went to the store with a friend so he could get some new strings and really dug the look and feel of this.[Edited on March 21, 2016 at 9:16 AM. Reason : ]

I almost bought an unplanned guitar this weekend, then I had some unplanned expenses...Also colangus I'd highly recommend Amplitube. Shit soundz great

I play exclusively acoustic (Taylor 410ce is my main) but I've been itching to get an American Standard Strat with a Vox amp lately.
3/21/2016 12:02:09 PM
Actually does anyone have recommendations on an acoustic? I like to think that I'm not a beginner to guitar but I'm also not trying to pay a shit load for one. My only real requirement is that the neck be relatively thin but I'm not afraid to sand that shit down myself either...
3/21/2016 4:08:42 PM
Seagull is good value for the $$. Had mine 15+ years now with no complaints.
3/21/2016 5:26:37 PM
^^I had a Taylor 110 before I upgraded to the 410ce. It was a good entry level high end guitar if that makes sense. The woods are a bit thinner and there are no frills (inlays, etc.) but they curve the back of it slightly to boost the volume. There are definitely comparable entry level Martins as well - I can't remember the model but I played a gorgeous new one at a friends house and was so impressed I looked it up and was surprised that it was sub $700. It even had some ornamentation in the inlays and what looked like zebrawood sides.Generally Martins are known for bass response and a more mellow sound than Taylors, which are more treble and bright. There are some decent higher end Ovations that have more of an electric guitar neck to them.
3/22/2016 11:55:34 AM
Yes, Taylors are great. I have a 615ce (jumbo cutaway) and a 710. Really great guitars. I'd never trade them.Check out Alvarez Guitars too. Of course Martins are great, but pricey.

I think I have my first legit band in quite a while. Been playing with an old friend who is a bassist/vocalist, we found a drummer who is solid (and also a good guitar player as well), and we all just met with a chick last night who is interested in playing guitar and synths and backing vocals for us. Trying not to get my hopes up, but I am looking forward to jamming with a full group this week.
