Saw this little blip about the Pullen Park carousel in the paper today. Not really Hillsborough Street related, but kind of (plus the Pullen Park thread was closed).

Quote :
"RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Parks officials in Raleigh hope to have one of their two historic carousels back in operation next month.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported the carousel at Pullen Park is to reopen Nov. 19.

The park was closed in 2009 for a $6 million renovation that includes reworking the 1911 carousel, new playground equipment, a visitors center, caf? and a new tunnel for the refurbished kiddie train.

Qualifies more as "near Hillsborough Street", but a couple of interesting points about Cameron Village in yesterday's Technician--one, the 2-story Chick-Fil-A construction is well underway and they're shooting for a February 2 open date. It will also have some sort of odd internal drive-through which I can't exactly grasp the concept of from the description, but sounds intriguing. Evidently CV regulations prohibit conventional drive-through setups (perhaps McDonald's was grandfathered in) so this is an alternate option.

Two, the gelato and cupcake shop Sugarland, currently on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, is planning on opening up in Cameron Village and moving most of their operations here, and possibly even closing the Franklin Street store. Not finalized yet but the deal is in the works. Despite their Chapel Hill origins, this is a good thing--their gelato and their cupcakes are both outstanding.

^^ Well hopefully their cupcakes are better than that we already have in Raleigh because the two places I can think of suck.

^^ Chick-fil-A park. People will plan their day around visiting it.

As for the Cupcake place, maybe it'll lead to improved football recruiting ala Marvin "man tits" Austin at UNC. Hopefully no NCAA sanctions though.

Walking from class today, I noticed that Two Guys has been completely gutted. The red facade is gone and the walls have been knocked down on the front of the restaurant. Anyone know more?

^^Really? I wonder if they're doing some major renovations or if something else is taking its place. Either way, I'll kind of miss the old Two Guys. Spent quite a bit of time there.

Upon further inspection, the ovens and stuff are still in there and the tables are stacked up against the wall.

Looks like they're just pushing the front wall back a bit to have a covered outdoor area like Chipotle or Porters.

Glad they are reconsidering the current bike lane setup, as it is definitely not adequate with a 4 foot lane immediately adjacent to parked cars.

I had heard they went out of business, which made me sad. Although to be honest I only ate there like twice my entire college career and neither time was very good. Hopefully it's just renovations and they'll be renovating their kitchen staff while they're at it lol.

I say they should stop allowing cars on it and make it bikes and pedestrians then. Cars just get in the way.

So Brothers and Two Guys are now both gone? They were sort of a part of the culture at NC State. They both have a square on my NC Stateopoly board. I saw that the updated version has Gumby's Pizza in place of Brothers.

Brothers Pizza is where Melvin's Burgers is now. When I was in college they had a Brothers Pizza sign hanging on the wall in Melvin's. I always thought that was cool.

Yeah, the new one looks like the below photos. Mine doesn't have a tuffy logo either. It just has a red S on it with no NC, like the old helmets from the Earl Edwards era. The new one also has the RBC Center on it, so when the name of the arena changes then that version will be a collectors item too.

They should have kept their current concept and just made it not awful. Do they really think they can unthrone I Love NY Pizza? They're not exactly good either, but there's not a day goes by that the place isn't full to the brim with customers, even after the addition of Chipotle.

^A Chicago pizza place would actually make a lot more sense, and probably break the NY Pizza mold just enough (will still being an annoying pizza shop on a street full of pizza shops) just enough to stay afloat.

There's already one in Cary so I'm assuming same owners.

I also think it's crap it's going to be another pizza joint but think of all the non-pizza places that have failed around there. Hell, Mcdonalds couldn't even survive. Can't blame entrepreneurs for putting in what they see as a safe bet. Just wish we had more creative people opening businesses and students that'll actually patron more than pizza.

They changed owners or management in 2008 or so, and the new guy just doesn't seem to have a clue. Used to love going there, but after this new guy took over he completely gutted the inside and turned it from a nice classic italian restaurant to a generic "modern" restaurant, ruined the recipes and food (how do you take your established recipes and actually make them suck?) and pretty much destroyed everything else that made that a quality restaurant. It's no wonder the only way they figure they can survive is to be yet another pizza joint.

^I do, but I don't. I always enjoyed going to Melvin's between class because it was fast. Yes the burgers were half cold and burned on the edges, but who cares? It's college, so the food isn't supposed to be great.

There is definitely a place for Melvins'. I just wish that place wasn't in place of Brothers. I'm also sad to hear of the final disappearance of Two Guys, but it hadn't been right since the new management took over anyway so maybe it was time.

RIP Two Guys.

What a shitty mindset to have. Expect nothing but mediocrity and that's all you'll ever get.
