i could see the potential for many people trying to reach those bases, causing chaos while they are trying to get in without the zombies coming in with them.i'd rather hole up somewhere relatively few people know about, so i have more supplies for my crew.

Dear snewf... that 10/22 wouldn't be what you want to use on the un-dead....it won't drop shit immediately ..i know cause i have one... its my varmint gun (pretty much a weak ass sniper rifle) I've shot many a squirrel with it and they laughed at me till they bled out the exit wound but since zombies wouldn't bleed out i don't think it would do too welleverything i would have would be large caliber. i'd carry my .50 s&w mag, a shot gun and try to steal a .50 bmg from a gun store somewhere... or team up with someone who does have one ... or a .60 or .70 NE
1/6/2008 1:22:15 PM
I'm hoping that the .22 magnums will penetrate skulls at a mid to semi-close rangeI chose it because the ammo is small (which lets me carry more) and readily availabledo you think it won't penetrate the skull at 20 feet?it doesn't need to exit... just skip along the inside of the skull and puree shit

it's at the carolina theater tonight at 7:30pm, costume contest at 7pm. If you dress like a zombie they have to let you in right? But i know passes are available at the comic shop in Chapel Hill and I think at the theater. Just dress up, how can anyone turn you away then. Afterwards there is a zombie dance party at Bull McCabe's -- a bar around the corner from the Carolina. It's free and open to anyone. Also, just a rumor right now, but I hear the grand prize for the zombie costume contest is something signed, by someone awesome in the world of zombies, but that's just a rumor right now as I haven't seen anything yet.

Dear Diary,EERRRRAAAGGGGHGHGHBRAINSXOXO,Zombie Ed
2/14/2008 12:32:54 PM
Silly rabbits. A shotgun is far from an ideal zombie killing weapon. If you're close enough for a shotgun to be effective, you're too close. Shotgun can be good and getting out of a tight situation, but at the ranges that you can reliably but shot gun ammo through the skull of a zombie that it trying to eat you, the spread isn't much wider than a pistol or rifle. Remember, you must hit the head. A zombie with a shotgun blast to the chest is just a pissed off zombie. Shot placement counts when it come to zombies, even with a shotgun at close range. And at close range, you're going to be fighting off panic because the zombies will be very close and you won't have any margin for error.Everyone should be considering a small carbine type weapon or a small assault rifle; something like an M4 or a Sig556. Both are chambered in 5.56, are accurate and deadly at extended range, and are easily portable. You can carry a hell of a lot more 5.56 ammo than you can 12 gauge ammo. Zombies are best dealt with at range. The further you are from the zombies, the calmer you'll be and the better your marksmanship will be. Thus, you're going to want something that can reliability put zombies down without weighing you down. An M4 or a Sig556 will be effective in almost all zombie engagements at almost all ranges.
2/14/2008 12:39:00 PM
I see your point, but shouldn't you be only shooting zombies when they are attacking you, thus within shotgun range? If you start shooting zombies at a distance, they will be alerted to you and then you are in more trouble than if you had let them pass. Obviously, you need a wide range of weapons. I don't really play into the "what if you could only choose one gun" because chances are, you would have the option to take many if you could. I doubt that a zombie outbreak is going to leave lots of people at gun shops debating shotguns over riffles, you grab and go and hope you get their before me.
2/14/2008 12:43:29 PM
2/14/2008 12:46:06 PM
Yeah but the best defense against zombies is running away from them and carrying multiple guns is gonna weigh you down too much. Another thing is that whatever gun you do get... you need to make sure that ammo is readily available for it. I agree that a shotgun is far from perfect as a zombie defense weapon, but you can probably find shotgun shells at just about any Wal-Mart. I'm not much of a gun expert so correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't get assault rifle ammo unless it is at a gun shop.(PS - You don't have to reload blades)
2/14/2008 2:27:54 PM
Weapons are one thing, but you never have to use them if you're in the right fortress. Getting out of town and into a good stronghold away from the zombie masses is probably best. A wide open farm would work pretty well and you could bet not many "scavenger" gangs are going to be stopping by like they would at a Costco or Sams. Fighting off zombies is one thing, but desperate people is another all together. Ultimately, I think it's about waiting it out, letting them starve. This could take months, or close to a year. After that you would have to reevaluate your situation, but that should probably be your first thoughts. Taking things as they come and making sure you can stay put in one good spot for at least 6 months should be priority.
2/14/2008 4:56:35 PM
It depends on the zombies though... if they are capable of moaning or something, then if even one sees you it will make noise which will bring about the attention of other zombies. And if you are holed up in a farmhouse, it's only a matter of time before they break in or you run out of water.

Really, there are a lot of variables that make this hard.Guns (ammo): .50? Most places I've been only carry a few boxes of this due to the fact that they may only sell a few boxes a week. .22 and 9mm? Loads of it to keep up with demand. In an ideal situation, I'd like multiple caliber weapons (4 that I can think of right off the bat). Increasing my chances that if I run across some random store (not/slightly looted) it will have some ammo that I can use. Even better (less weight), firearms capable of swapping out barrels (such as the Sig Sauer P250) to reduce weight.Food: Those MREs you're carrying are going to go fast.Storing enough food in your basement? Going to need a really large basement. What's your next option? Searching? Really increases your chances of running into zombies. But, may be necessary.Housing: Farmhouse: nice and secluded (please have a water pump). Not going to have many zombies run across you either. Scavengers? Possibly. But, you'd still want enough people to guard 24/7... which would require a lot of food/water. Possibly too much for that farmhouse to handle.Fortress: Nice as well. Have guards. Food. Water. Hell, that's why the human race started congregating. Makes things easier for everyone. Have a skill other than fighting? Great, we needed that blacksmith/cook/engineer. You will need to deal with lots of people though and if it broke down, you're probably not going to have the supplies you would have at the outbreak of the zombies. As supplies run down though, scavenger parties will have to travel farther and farther to get enough supplies to support everyone. And yes, a nice fortified position is good, but worthless without food/water. Would be why castles were built near/on sources of water. And the king/soldiers protected the lands around them (fields of grain).Probably the most preferable thing (in my opinion), somewhere deep in a forest where I'm probably only going to run in to a zombie park ranger. Be able to live off the land (food? hunting and fishing. water? water collection and there's a stream a half mile north). In a fortress situation, it would be not just to have the fortress, but the surrounding lands protected as well so that we could produce our own food instead of constantly searching for new supplies.Ideal fortress? Prison. Some are built in the middle of nowhere. Can expand the walls later to allow farming. And definitely have guard towers.[Edited on March 10, 2008 at 8:14 AM. Reason : prison]
3/10/2008 8:11:04 AM
So in conclusion, as we are fighting off all the zombies, the inmates get to live.
3/10/2008 8:16:41 AM
^^ A mountainous forest would be ideal, zombies would lack the coordination to walk up steep inclines and climb if necessary. You'd have to be careful not to be too far north though or else you'll have a hell of a time in the winter.[Edited on March 10, 2008 at 9:02 AM. Reason : ]

3/10/2008 9:07:56 AM
^^^^,^^ problem with those ideal locations is that you're not the only survivor who would have thought of those places. Other parties will head to those areas, and zombies will follow. Gangs of raiders will scour those places searching for developments to rape and pillage. Ideally, the best place to survive through the holocaust would be a place in an isolated area of the world that is incredibly inhosbitable, like a swamp or rain forest/jungle, if I remember correctly.
3/10/2008 9:11:49 PM
Yet, I seem to recall that humans live in those types of environments naturally as well. Don't believe it would take that long for those "remote" environments to be infiltrated by zombies as well. Unless we're talking about middle of the fucking Amazon that you almost died to get to and will surely die just trying to get out.And sometimes, it is good to have a community. No one person can do everything. And that was what I was pointing out. You have a pre-built fortress that you can add onto. Are there going to be issues with some people? Yes. There are always going to be.And zombies following you to a prison, what's bad about that? Besides laying in a cot listening to them groaning when you're trying to sleep at night.Maybe you feel uneasy about being with a couple hundred other people in one place. I understand that. But, I would feel a little more comfortable knowing that I had 20 guys protecting me during the day shift and I would change out for the night shift. A lot more comfortable than putting all my faith in one guy not falling asleep. And definitely more comfortable than sleeping in a tree.In the end, no one place is ever going to be absolutely perfect.(sidenote: How would you get to these isolated places after the zombies invade? Supposing major transportation avenues being shutdown. Carrying enough fuel for the entire trip?)
3/10/2008 11:33:10 PM
^ best way to get out there is to go before everything goes to shit/when avenues of transportation still exist. but back up plans are always good.
3/10/2008 11:36:55 PM
Of course you wouldn't go it alone, that's suicide. You would need a good group of people that had a knowledgeable leader in order to survive the zombie world.

3/11/2008 8:50:16 AM
In the zombie survival guide, it does stress living in an extremely harsh and inhospitable environment. Humans can adapt to a place like this, but obviously zombies couldn't. If you could find a means of transportation and a way of staying warm, upper Canada/Alaska would leave you pretty much safe from any zombies since they would literally freeze solid.
3/11/2008 9:45:25 AM
I don't buy into all of what the zombie survival guide says.here's a question... what would happen if things got desperate, and you had to eat the flesh of a zombie... would that have the same effect as being bitten by one of the zombies?
3/11/2008 10:27:04 AM
I'm pretty sure it would. Just about any situation which results in zombie fluids getting into your bloodstream is going to infect you. And even if it didn't, a zombie's flesh is gonna be all rotten and nasty and will make you sick anyway.
3/11/2008 2:13:34 PM
^ Which is why I wonder why you should bother with melee weapons anyway, unless you can completely count on being covered head to toe so as not to be infected yourself. (i.e. 28 Days Later)

zombie posting on tww:wg;lewqfh;oweqhf'ew
3/11/2008 2:20:05 PM
Well you would only really need to cover your mouth and wear some kind of goggles over your eyes. Zombie blood can get all over your skin and hair, just as long as there aren't any open wounds on you. All you ADD people who bite the skin around your fingernails would probably need gloves. But melee weapons obviously would only be useful as a last resort or in closed quarters anyway.
3/11/2008 2:36:01 PM
Oh man... I would love to have a full-head gas mask and body armor. Granted, I just think it would look cool though.
