I am not exactly sure what you were thinking on that one. Raising in the first hand of a sit and go with 22, not exactly solid play. Sure, you hit your set, but you were still really far behind after the flop. You won the hand with a miracle deuce on the river.... but I'm willing to bet you didn't win the tournament.
6/17/2005 3:35:16 AM

I finished just out of the $, it was a multi-table with ~300 folks in it. Didn;'t get much in the way of cards all game.I know it's not a "solid" play, but I always raise with 2s. I do realize I'm behind going into any flop with them. And yes, I got lucky as hell, hence why I said they love me... I put him on high cards. But those out there who play with me will attest, I probably win with 2's more than anyone.

I love calling raises with low pairs. If my opponent and I both have respectable stacks and I have position, I'll call upwards of 5BB preflop raises. Great implied odds if you hit vs AA or KK, and occasionally you can steal the pot if you have a good read on them. This is how I win most of my big pots.

6/19/2005 10:40:26 AM
Won a sit-n-go last night.... when it went heads up my opponent started going all-in on every hand. I laid the first three down, then doubled up on him on a A9 vs 107 type of scenario. In the next half dozen hands or so he managed to split the pot when dominated preflop three times on A9 vs. A7, K7 vs K4, and Q10 vs Q8. I realize low kickers can often not matter, but he'd have been smoked had I won any of those.I finally lost with A10 against his J9, and crumbled down to like 400 chips (out of the 8000 on the board). I managed to win two in a row, then the poor SOB got disconnected. A couple dozen hands later he was blinded out. Poor bastard
6/21/2005 8:53:23 AM

i totally agree ... but it's more lame to lose $11 than win only $4. i can't win on the $10+1 tables to save my life. every time i play, i'm the third or fourth out. i'll get awesome starting hands and then the flop comes 5-8-3 rainbow. not helping my Ah,Kh much. i play two or three 5+1 tables a day. i usually win one, and place in at least one of the others. so, it's profit. i do it for the entertainment value, not because i need the money supplement. god help me if i were depending on poker to pay my expenses. i'd be barefoot and homeless....then again, i won a $20 on absolute poker yesterday. i seem to do better on the higher tables there, and smaller tables on party. I played online yesterday for about 10hours. In that time, I got quads, a straight flush, and saw that guy get quads back to back, and an hour before saw another guy get them.
6/24/2005 11:12:31 AM
because the outcome of your hands you played yesterday (assuming single table 0.50/1, @ ~50hands/hour, you may have seen 500 hands) has any real issue with your long term outcome percentages. 500 hands is an awful small sample size. however, over the long term the final hand distrobutions will be roughly the same. and by long term i mean at minimum 200,000 hands. It doesnt matter at when they come, it just matters that they do.You must learn the concept of variance. Also realize that you are seeing 500 hands, where the table is seeing 5000. hell, what are your preflop chances of catching quads? im at work so i dont have my books or cant lookt it up.. lets say its 1,000:1. so it hitting twice in a row is 1,000*1,000:1. thats only 1,000,000:1. how many hands has party poker dealt? well over a billion im sure. so, with an average of 7 players per table, thats well over 7 billion times where someone could hit a 1 million to one shot. Id bet it has happened a few times before.
6/24/2005 11:27:14 AM
but then say only 35% of the people see the flop...that's cutting down on 65% of the probability that someone will even see the flop to be able to hit the quads.. let alone stay in the hand long enough to hit on the turn or river not saying it's impossible, or that it's rigged, but that's pretty unlikely, and i don't think it would happen as often as you think
6/24/2005 11:49:25 AM
10 hours * 3 tables *50hands/hour * 10 players per table is 15,000 single hands. What you saw was not probable, but not impossible.
6/24/2005 12:17:54 PM
6/24/2005 1:00:47 PM
and then throw in the fact that most of the time people will not throw away a pocket pair and it probably happens more often
6/24/2005 4:58:59 PM

never said it was a good move, just that I knew neither of them were smart enough to call...
6/25/2005 12:46:38 AM
It's a matter of risk/reward.Against bad players, you run a very real risk of falling victim to a loose call such as A-6 in that spot. There's also the risk that you're playing against a passive bad player who has a big hand by the river to legitamitely call you with. There are also bad players online with the "don't get bluffed" mentality. You showed weakness on the turn, and they're the type who would call you with 2nd pair on the river cause they "knew you were bluffing". These guys, and idiots who go all-in with nothing are the ones you see consistantly going broke in the first round or two of most every sit-n-go at party. You put yourself in a position where you would lose to any one of these type of bad players. The risk was $11 of real money. But you didn't go broke, and your reward was ~400 tournament chips with that all-in. However, at this stage in the tournament those chips have very little real money value(meaning they do not significantly increase your chances of finishing in the money), especially compared to the $11 you risked.I know you already conceeded that it wasn't a good play, but it didn't work because you played smarter than your opponents. It was a pretty dumb play, and you just happened to be against two other bullshit hands that couldnt call you. The great thing about playing against bad players is that your good hands will get paid off, not that you can bluff your way out of every pot - cause you really can't.Knowing how to play against bad players is what really makes you a good player. If you play badly against them, you are no better.
6/25/2005 3:36:33 AM
does anyone know what the odds are of being dealt the same pocket pair 3 hands in a row?we were playing in a little $5 buy-in tourney at my friend's house, and my cousin was dealt pocket kings 3 hands in a row. we were playing with 2 decks of cards, and shuffled between every hand.
6/25/2005 12:12:56 PM
I think the odds of getting a pocket pair dealt to you 3 times in a row are 1 in 4,913, and that is any pocket pair, not necessarily repeated, for example 33, 88, KK.The odds of getting the same pocket pair 3 times in a row is 1 in 830,297.The odds of getting a particular pocket pair 3 times in a row is 1 in 10,793,861.I am pretty sure that the way I came up with those numbers is correct. So last night, you saw a 1 in 10,000,000 chance.Just to put that in perspective, consider a lottery that places 50 balls numbered 1-50 in a machine, and expels 6 of them. The odds that you pick only those 6 balls are 1 in 15,890,700... quite a comparable number.[Edited on June 25, 2005 at 12:26 PM. Reason : hmmmm]
6/25/2005 12:25:30 PM
6/25/2005 2:48:21 PM
In the first example, it's like if I were to say "I'm going to get the same pocket pair 3 times in a row." So let's say first hand I get JJ. Now I have to get 2 more consecutive hands of JJ. I calculated this by (1/17)(1/221)(1/221).In the latter example, it's like if I were to say "I am going to get QQ 3 times in a row." So basically, in this case, I have specified the exact pocket pair I am going to get prior to the first hand being dealt, as opposed to the previous case in which I waited to get any pocket pair, then stipulated that I would get the same pocket pair the next 2 hands. I calculated this by (1/221)^3.
