This seems obvious even with something approaching AGI. Ultimately, you'll have to distribute capability to the population. But how does the population even use it effectively? Who does the distribution and who gets it becomes more of a social political question than a technical one.

Appalachia and rural NC didn't get the benefits of slave labor based internet technology like SF or even Raleigh did. Even if you 10x, 100x GDP, who says even 2x of that growth goes to those place? Why would say, Sam Altman*, not just round up problematic people and areas with humanoid robots if they needed resources or just became unhappy with the goods given?

Even places like SF are famously dystopian and poor in a lot of areas. The border of Tenderloin and Nob Hill have addicts shitting on the street with the worst poverty you have ever seen three blocks from a social club with Bentleys and Rolls Royce cars. Human nature is such that a decision between space faring yachts for the 1% and a 1960s style middle class life for the masses the space faring yachts are going to win every time.

* Altman has argued they would be token distributors and give access to people in allotments that could then use their AI power to build things.

^ I would assume tgl meant the influencer variety. There has been a trend of TikTok influencers selling the SAHM mom thing but like Martha Stewart where they are tending the farm and making everything from scratch. There is some times a religious component, but not always.

It’s just a reversion to mean. Girl bossing PowerPoints to pay for your luxury apartment isn’t as fulfilling as staying at home with your three year old actually.

Quote :
"For readers of Betty Friedan or viewers of “Mad Men,” the idea that the interior life of a mid-twentieth-century housewife could be anything but tormented is strange, but the trad wives want to reclaim the role and show it as a source of pride and happiness. Though many trad wives voice suspicions of contemporary feminism, there is no singular model. The current queen is Hannah Neeleman, a homesteading mother of eight, who milks cows, bakes, dances, and takes part in beauty pageants, to the delight and incomprehension of her followers. Some, like the American Estee Williams, a quasi-Marilyn Monroe with white-blond waves and a cinched waist, advocate marital subservience"

I think staying at home with your kid in the early years is a great aspiration. Selling it for likes not so much.

ok fair. i don't think anybody ever claimed AI to be a fix for all of lifes problems either though, so why all the sneering at AI just bc it's not perfect

i just think it's pretty remarkable that in 13.8 billion years of the universe existing, it was never possible until the last few years to give a computer some instructions in plain language and it would instantly make a photo or video for you at essentially zero cost. that's pretty insane! it says a lot about our time that instead of cheering for this achievement, people are falling over themselves to be first in line to shit on it

from the first page of this thread:

saw this a few weeks ago and it still makes me mad:

Quote :
"I'm sorry but if you're against AI art you're an idiot

You're trying to stop the greatest innovation of our lifetime

In the next 2 years AI is going to eat everything and there is nothing you can do to stop it

Movies, music, video games, every form of media will me mostly made of AI. A tremendous amount of people in those industries will lose their careers

Why?

Because AI is cheaper, better, and faster.

Innovation always wins. It doesn't care who suffers. It doesn't care who loses their jobs. It doesn't care who goes broke.

For every artist it puts out of a job, it'll allow 100 other people to create art they've never been able to create before

I'm building an entire video game right now. This was never possible before

You really have 2 options, try to fight innovation and be left completely behind in modern society or embrace it and reap the rewards of a once in a lifetime transfer of wealth

Up to you. Adapt or die."

anything humans do today, they'll still be able to do tomorrow. they'll just have the choice to let a machine do it instead if they want. you can still grow your own food, ride your own horses, harvest your own cotton, sew and wash your own garments, etc. most people are happy to choose to let machines do most of that. and for good reason.

^^

Anyone saying they’re gonna remove humans from everything and you need to adapter die is being provocative and hyper. Hence the rage bait comment . Similarly the post about Gemini generating a graphic wrong was obviously done either with an old model or completely haphazardly or intentionally bad. It’s like if I took a paintbrush and made some garbage painting that looks like a three year-old did it and then blamed the quality of the painting on all of painting. There are plenty of ways to use an AI workflow that isn’t just hey Klinker do this. Similar to film you could make an entire computer generated picture or just use it for the editing piece. Using traditional techniques will always give you some kind of edge and make whatever art you’re doing have a or unique look in a sea of slop.

There is still an opportunity for humanity in art and manufacturing. Rich people still pay for bespoke custom beautifully made things that are handmade. There’s always going to be a market for that. But even the last decade, most of the slop people buy came from slave labor in China is just going to come from robots instead and it’s gonna be garbage when you compare it to something that’s craft fully done.

What I used:

Quote :
" Be sure to search and use this page for grounding https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_Series_champions

Create an info graphic for the World Series winners starting in 1986. "

You could specify what the image needed about the ribbon.

Alternatively you could do it in pieces (give me a background for a World Series info graphic) and assemble yourself.

^^ I quote "Technopoly" more than anyone else on the board so I don't know how I qualify handwaving the risks. Broadly I'm cautious/worried. I'd bet I'm at least 10x closer to AI doomer than qntmfred. In specific instances, like one I think you posted where a schizo goes more schizo after talking to AI and the theme is CHATGPT MAKING US INSANE, NEWS AT 11!!!! I think it's more click bait. I posted an article from Astral Codex about the actual risks involved with those cases, and the seem minor and real. IIRC we compared the risks to driving.

It would be funny if AI driving saves 30,000 lives a year and then kills about the same from psychosis. This regularly happens with technology that saves lives, especially in driving and aviation. I am more concerned about the AI employment risks when Philosophy majors that would have been able to make six figures as a project manager have to join the bread lines.

I'm also hardly a vaccine skeptic, with exception of maybe one. My kids did not get Hep B vaccine at birth (we were tested for Hep B and knew we did not have it), but all three got it before 1 years old. They could attend public school without a religious exemption. Actual vaccine skeptics do not vaccinate their kids.

It’s such obvious propaganda. When you’re at a restaurant and the waiter asks you do you want the veal and you say no I don’t eat veal and the waiter responds. What are you some kind of peta, what? What come back? What are you an peta anti-meat vegan even though you order the pork shoulder.

that's ridiculous. show me a quote/video of any of them saying AI will be a fix for all of lifes problems. they are on the whole very reasonable in their public statements. generally they are all saying that there is enormous opportunity ahead, but also enormous potential for potentially challenging disruptions to what we have come to except in the economy. that's just telling the truth, which is exactly what we want CEOs to do.

Quote :
"Broadly I'm cautious/worried. I'd bet I'm at least 10x closer to AI doomer than qntmfred"

i'm worried too. that was a central thesis of Yang's campaign. that there will be much to celebrate from the arrival of AI, but that the social disruption will likely be painful unless we get out in front of it and start making changes, just like society had to do once the effects of the industrial revolution were clear. long term though, the excitement about the potential for this technology dominates my perspective. i'd much MUCH rather see us go through that pain now, so that the next generation of humanity (eg my kids and grandkids) can reap its benefits.

Bernie’s right here. The corporations clearly won’t do the right thing on their own, this is a multi trillion dollar effort, and they need to start twisting arms to make sure the public good is not forgotten for the buildout. Only once they secure investment into social institutions let the buildout happen. And it wouldn’t impact the fundamental research that actually matters that much— we’re still early days for ai science.
