Martyr'd
1/9/2015 12:32:00 PM
I feel like Martyr'd would be if they just stayed at the newspaper and went down in a hail of bullets, rage, and indignation. These two tried to flee and get away with it, only to be manhunted into a corner where they realized their options were die quickly or die eventually (though not naturally), and then tried to claim martyrdom.

@ GoldieOHebdo Cover showing death of imam is accompanied with caption"ca n'arrete pas les balles" which translates to "It cannot stop the bullets."This text taken with the image is intended to mean that the illustrated person on the cover is unable to stop a barrage of bullets with his book (the Quran)This type of imagery would likely be prohibited, even under claims of First Amendment protections, had it been published in the USA.I am saying our system is superior in that regard because we enjoy freedoms, but Hate Speech that targets certain groups (i.e., in this example Muslims) portraying cartoons of them being shot would be subject to court order or injunction to cease publication of incitement speach. Our court system would allow people who felt injured by such images to seek a court order forcing them to stop publication, but it appears that publication showing such violence operated continually without any injunction telling them to cease publication. So I am making a statement that the American system has hate crime legislation, possibly as a matter of public policy to prevent flare ups between groups. If I drew a cartoon animation of you being fatally attacked, or a member of your group being attacked, even if I claimed it's a free country and I have a right to my ideas, you could still sue me because it's not a form of speech subject to 1A protections and could also violate other law. Those laws apparently were not in operation over there in this case.
1/9/2015 12:42:44 PM
It's a cartoon, not a specific person.
1/9/2015 12:52:47 PM
1/9/2015 12:54:47 PM
idk, man. I'm inclined to think you could be a martyr dying anywhere as long as your believers think you died standing for what you believe in.

1/9/2015 1:01:08 PM
The laws you're referring to prohibit certain criminal acts, not speech.
1/9/2015 1:02:50 PM
The question of whether speech is directed to an individual, a group, the likeness of an individual, a political entity, a foreign leader, or the likeness of a group will affect what laws can be asserted. But as a point of illustration, sure, Kim Jong Un could absolutely sue based on that movie and file suit in the US Court system.Whether or not the case would be decided meritoriously is a political question, but it would definitely make headlines and has a potential for being adjudicated with a resolution of some sort.

what are some other groups that are huge crybabies like muslimscan someone construct a nice pie graph that shows how many people they kill in comparison

^^^I don't know, liberals tend to be big crybabies. And they've indirectly killed lots of Americans with their policies, so does that count? [Edited on January 9, 2015 at 1:53 PM. Reason : ^]

has anyone mentioned how happy French courts are to censor works of art that are critical to Christianity or Judaism? The outcry in support of Charlie Hebdo seems hypocritical.
1/11/2015 2:43:10 PM
legal censorship is completely different than shooting everyone
1/11/2015 2:50:53 PM
that's a fair response, but France is hardly a great example of freedom of speech that criticizes religion. In French courts, art that is defamatory against Christianity or Judaism is often censored and few seem to care about this double standard.

yeah, to hell with dat ho. She's probably already fucking 30 other dudes.
1/11/2015 6:34:56 PM
dtownral can you cite some cases?Charlie also drew filthy cartoons of nuns and Jesus, and they were not censored afaik. However, I do remember reading that a cartoon against Jews was not published and the cartoonist/editor was fired or resigned for the unpublished cartoon, but nothing about court involvement.[Edited on January 11, 2015 at 7:41 PM. Hopefully the French will have the good sense to finally admit that they were wrong to oppose the Iraq war now.
1/11/2015 7:36:35 PM
you could say the iraq war led to this.
1/11/2015 7:43:09 PM
yeah - there were no islamic extremist terrorist attacks on western soil till after dubya started the iraq war
1/11/2015 9:25:50 PM
But what does any of it have to do with iraq? You brought it up and im saying one of the guys is known to have been motivated by the invasion of iraq. Isis was born in a us prison. Syria was destabilized by disenfranchised iraqi sunni extremists. Lets not lump all muslims together, lets just use the connections that exist.

Here's a look into the future for those in this thread promoting greater restrictions on speech in this country.http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2015/01/14/5446193/charlie-hebdo-sells-out-before.html#

Also, all of the leaders who marched in the unity march are now calling for increased domestic spying powers to prevent attacks like this.

For those who think this impulse to silence is limited to adherents of Islam, the pope voices his support for greater restrictions on speech, especially when that speech "makes fun of the faith of others."http://news.yahoo.com/pope-charlie-hebdo-limits-free-expression-121639260.html

He also condones violence in response to insults:
1/15/2015 11:47:13 AM
the Pope did not support restrictions on speech or condone violence, he just said that people should stop insulting other religions and that if people insult other religions they shouldn't be surprised when someone gets mad and acts violently[Edited on January 15, 2015 at 11:51 AM. Reason : .]
