Wow jesus is mad.

And I was in no way inferring that last night's actions trumping this story was the fault of the rioters. I mean, yea, it is because they rioted, but I was aiming it more at the media and this 24 hr news cycle we have.

Chill out man.

In a completely empty park, they drove in at high speed so close the cop had to practically ask the kid to back up so he could open his car door. Every encounter becomes a life and death decision when you rush in guns blazing.

Same problem in ferguson. He tried to arrest the kid without even getting out of his car. Of course things are going to go south when you don't even bother trying to control or diffuse the situation from a safe distance, or god forbid, wait for sufficient manpower. It would also seem reasonable to point the front of the car at the target so the camera can protect the officer.

But cops statement is he told the kid to put his hands up, and the kid went for his waste band. That kid didn't have enough time to register what was happening before that cop shot him up.

Reminds me a lot of this.

But in the Mike Brown thread people are saying black people are overreacting etc

Cops were on screen for less than one frame of the security camera before they shot. These riots are going to spread across the country tonight.

Here's the video of the 12 year old being shot. This is pretty surreal and sad.

Yeah watching that video, while I know some frames are missing, it looks like they just rolled up, jumped out the door and fired. I do see where it looks like as they rolled up the kid did put his hand down to his waistband, but as others have said what kept them from pulling up on the street there and giving the kid even a chance to realize what was happening. For all we know he was simply like OH FUCK COPS and trying to pull his shirt out to cover up the toy gun so he wouldnt get in trouble.. a natural reaction in that situation. I feel certain had that happened the kid would have started yelling that the gun is fake once he realized they knew he had it.

I cant really blame someone for calling 911 if I saw someone walking down the street pointing a gun like that and it looked real I could see myself at least debating making that call.

so if he had the gun in his hand a started to raise it. or if it was in his pants band and he went for it. there is a time limit that they have to wait to open fire?

just trying to figure out what the right move is when you're approaching someone who has what could be a real weapon and has been pointing it at people is.

doe the cops need to get shot first?

^x5 He started the encounter from far too close. Even if they rushed his car...he's in a car. It has reverse. It's not like they came out of nowhere and smashed his windows. He'd been watching them. He could have started the encounter from 30 feet away and ordered them to the ground one by one, just like any textbook traffic stop.

^If you're going to drive that close to an "active shooter", might as well just run him over with the car.

Its a empty park, and you rush in wide open within a few feet of the armed suspect? Or do you pull in at a distance and try to communicate first, especially when its a 12 year boy.

Its a 12 year old, not a 18 year old thug or gang banger. This was a fucking kid.

^Those are my thoughts, should have just hit him with the car. Hopefully he would have lived and made it to his 13 birthday.

a textbook traffic stop usually includes a firearm that has been brandished openly at other people?

how much distance does a cop car travel in reverse if the cop throws it in gear as soon as someone draws a bead on them? quick enough to avoid a projectile traveling faster than the speed of sound?

it amazes me that so many people taking the side of someone who was pointing a realistic looking gun at people and made a move towards a cop that was anything besides giving the fuck up

^They do it all the time. Clear orders to one passenger at a time from a protected firing stance some distance away, and then allow a few seconds for a response. If a barrel get raised, light them up. Up close, all bets are off.

They were driving so fast they had no idea who the subject was. Maybe they WERE trying to run him over with the car.

It's like SWATTING a house unannounced at 3am just to serve some papers, then acting surprised when the homeowner shoots back. Rushing leads to death.

The cops aren't indicting in the John Crawford case either, another situation where we have video of the entire incident, and crawford never pointed a gun at the cops, he didn't even know they were there.

I don't get why cops get so much leeway to murder completely innocent people, from 12 years old on up.

If this were a concealed carry permit holder, would he be allowed to shoot a 12 year old just because he had an air pistol? Would a conceal carried owner be allowed to choose a fellow patron at a store who was nonchalantly carrying that merchandise around?

also amusing that all the people posting the video have tended to exclude the video of the kid going after people with the gun drawn...like this still shows...is this how every CCW permit uses his gun?

but he's just some poor innocent kid who was gunned down in cold blood

Explain to me how an individual walking around in a park aiming a gun at random people is to be presumed innocent?

It sounds to me like a lot of people on this board would expect the following situation to go down:

Dispatch: 911 what is your emergency?
Caller: There is a someone in my home with a gun, please help!

3 minutes later

Cops outside with a loud speaker: Excuse me sir, if you are indeed a sir, do you actually have a weapon or are you just horsing around? Are you a child? Is your gun a real gun or a toy gun or a pellet gun? Would you mind if we came inside and had a talk with you to find out if you're really a criminal or just "doing things kids do?"

Except the caller told them they believed the gun was most likely fake. So you are implying that this 12 year old deserved to die? Either it was a justified shooting or it wasn't. In your opinion, from the video, is that justified?

Get ready for the riots, shits gonna burn.

No one said the kid shouldn't have been arrested. It was a bad takedown in a non-hostage situation that led to an unnecessary death.

The Mayor, Prosecutor, Governor, President and even the United Nations have all failed to act or even publicly condemn the shooters. I don't know what can fix the situation at this point other than fire. As of yesterday it's front page news in the entire world, so we can thank the fires for that.

^^^ are you serious? he didn't shoot anyone... he's presumed innocent, because if he was running around shooting people, there would have been frantic 911 calls and ambulances... the old man across the street wouldn't have said it's probably a fake gun.

Did the gun even have BBs or an air canister? Did anyone report to the police being shot with a BB?

I'm not sure how you people played with guns as kids, but it generally involves miming the action of shooting someone...

LOL, even in that situation cops wouldn't go in guns blazing.

The rookie cop clearly screwed up here by not holding his fire. The video makes this even more clear.

Take this logic to its natural conclusion, dude. You're basically saying giving cops a blank check to shoot first and ask questions later. Don't you think they should at least verify that something or someone is an actual threat before shooting it dead?

Or, can they just roll up like gang busters into every situation merely because they PERCEIVE a threat exist?

Is it too much to ask that cops put in a bare minimum effort before unloading on a child in the park?

It doesn't matter. A cop is going to approach as if it is really a gun. What do you suppose the odds are that a caller would mistake a fake gun for a real gun? How about the odds a caller would mistake a real gun for a fake gun?

I make that point in the abstract. I do however find it highly strange that the cops just drove onto the grass like that. I don't really understand that unless they didn't know the kid was there and were driving further into the park to try and find him when they suddenly saw him and freaked out.

Right and the cops and anyone else around have no clue when the person may decide to start shooting...

I mean like I said I dont blame someone for calling the cops, but they did say they thought it was fake and that was apparently never relayed. I mean as soon as I saw the car fly up through the grass I immediately thought wtf. I was expecting the car to roll up on the street and see the cops get out and then see the kid make some kind of obvious move to set off the shots being fired.

As I said I suspect the kid turned around saw cops flying up and went to untuck his shirt and have it cover up the gun because he just didnt want to get in trouble. Unfortunate situation, but I cant imagine them letting this one slide with that video.

did you watch the video? What you're saying makes no sense.

Another person walked within 3 ft of the kid as the kid pretended to shoot him, and was not alarmed. There was a person in the gazebo as the kid was on the sidewalk.

The police said the rookier officer shot the kid immediately after he got out of the car.

I can't see how anyone could interpret this as anything but a failure on the officer's part. This is a 12 year old at a park.

In the worst case scenario, where we presume this kid was a sociopathic gang banger, pointing a real gun at a park at people (who showed no fear of him) and intending to shoot someone, the fact there was no reports of shots being fired would mean shooting him instantly is the wrong things for cops to do.

This isn't even a black/white thing. No one wants to live in a society where cops are taught it's okay to shoot first and ask questions later. We shouldn't tell cops its okay to murder children just because they are afraid.

Yeah, like Cherokee said, I think the cops didn't see he was so close and got freaked out.

So many things could have prevented this though. Better relayed 911 info, maybe heads up IR display in the windshield to better spot people from a distance, even just bulletresistant glass so they wouldn't feel so vulnerable in the car and rush to get out and start shooting. Or just not rushing in.

how do you verify if a gun that someone has used to threaten people before you get there is fake? ask him to borrow it for a sec? wait for him to shoot someone?

and y'all saying "innocent" - you do realize it's against the law to threaten people with a gun, even if its fake, right?

No one's saying innocent.

We are saying it was a bad shoot.

A minor, stupid offense that this kid could have laughed about as an adult. Maybe a little bit of bad parenting. Every kid loves to pull those orange tips out of toy guns. But now he's dead.

it's horrible the kid's dead. but he's dead because of his own actions.

if the person makes a move to use his gun or points it at the cop, the proper response is to shoot

i don't know any kids who think it's fun to chase people down the sidewalk with a gun drawn
