Usually people who are "early to bed, early to rise" are boring old people who eat meat and potatoes every night at 5:00pm

I don't think you know exactly what you're arguing against. When I wake up Saturday morning and need to do a house project, I do the following:

- Wake up and write down a list of shit I need to get at the store;

- Go to the store and get the shit on the list;

- Come back and do my project.

I mean...I could go to the store on Friday night...but then I'd miss out on all of the cool shit that everyone else ITT is doing at night...

This is your separate issue. No one is even being close to inferring this at all.

There would be nothing passive or difficult to understand about it. Again, this has never been a problem, but I would talk to my neighbor and work something out. If he said "sorry, 8 am is a reasonable time" like some of you in this thread, or turned around and did it again anyway, I would waste no time in being a loud fucker at times he would not appreciate. He'd either get the message immediately, or he'd say something to me about possibly choosing a different time to fine tune the settings of a couple thousand watts of home theater or cut 2x4s out in the driveway with a circular saw, at which point I'd reply "Much like you are always up at 8 am on Saturdays, I am rarely in bed before the wee hours on Tuesdays or pretty much any other day. Maybe we could work out a mutually beneficial arrangement"...and then he'd get the message.

Quote :
"Well in your hypothetical starring two stand-offish socially inept retards, I guess the guy mowing at 10am would win since the law is on their side."

False, I will win, because I am unquestionably more stubborn and have more of a capacity for being a dick if I need to, and if you aren't in a place with noise ordinances, there is no law on anyone's side, as far as I know (and even if there was, how much does a violation cost? It can't be that much.)

I don't like living in a subdivision due to little things that neighbors do that are irritating (letting their cats roam and piss/shit in my yard or crawl on my car if I leave it outside, people parking on the street, plants/weeds growing over/under their fences into my yard, etc). Consequently, I really make it a point to not be intrusive to neighbors. I err on the side of caution, because that's the price you pay for living in a subdivision, at least if you want to be a good neighbor.

If you don't and it poses a problem, I'll ask you nicely to fix it. I won't be a dick if you aren't being an asshole. If it comes down to it, the dick will be bigger than the asshole, though.

...or worse yet, even if you knew they wouldn't be up and had asked you not to call/text them that early or late?

If so, there is a word for you: asshole. You are a fucking asshole. You are inconsiderate and socially dysfunctional. If you knowingly did it and that person responded by calling you, texting you, or knocking on your door at 4 am, well, it would be exactly like what you did to them.

Noise violations fines aren't cheap. And if you kept being an asshole, I assure you that he would keep calling the police. One $1,000 fine might not mean much to you, but 10 or 20 might. If the guy is as stubborn as you are, he might still be cutting his lawn at 8 am while you're paying off $20,000 in fines. He wins.

Right. Also, contractors go get shit there early, then start heading to the job site, then get there and start working at normal business hours, because they're a fucking business and that's what they do.

Also, if you live out in the sticks like where I grew up and want to run a goddamn jackhammer at 6 am, then go for it.

That's not what we're talking about here. If you want to mow your grass at 8, clear it with your neighbors, or move to somewhere with no neighbors. What time you want to get up and get shit done has nothing to do with anything. The whole point is that you're a total cocksucker if you just do whatever you want, whenever you want, and don't consider and/or care that other people might not operate on your schedule.

Bars stay open until fucking 2 am or later, because they know that people like to go out drinking and partying until late. Does that make it OK for me to throw a kegger with 50 or 100 people in my backyard until 2 am in a subdivision? Fuck no.

^^^ That's the problem. You're comparing someone mowing their lawn at 8 am to throwing a kegger at 2 am (or intentionally revving their motorcycle...or whatever dickhead action you can come up with). Other than the fact that both actions create noise that might annoy other people...that's where the comparisons end.

If that's the case you can be damned sure I'd be blowing out the surround sound speakers until 10:59pm (most noise ordinances start at 11)since, by law, that is fair game and your child's sleep schedule be damned.

But that's the point -- why purposefully be a dick?

And our neighborhood has rules about noise after 9pm, so it wouldn't work. Sorry.

Do you really not understand the difference between playing music and mowing the yard? Do you think most people actually want to mow the yard or do it out of necessity?

No way. I go out of my way to ensure that I don't bother neighbors. I would be the absolute least of your problems, unless YOU are a problem.

I mean, shit, this whole argument is essentially because people like you are saying "Fuck your neighbors, mow the grass early." How in the hell do you figure that I'M the asshole?

On an unrelated note, fuck an HOA, too. I'd rather just deal with a shitty neighbor (even if it has to be through the "who's a more obstinate dickhead" process) than open the door to a whole bunch of busybodies who want to fuck with everyone. It's not that I'd even want to do anything that most of them would prohibit, but I don't like having to go play the "mother may I" game with them, or have them leave a note threatening a fine because I left a jet ski out in the driveway to dry in the sun after being washed (yes that really happened one time at another place).

Obnoxious noise is obnoxious noise. You can wait a couple more hours to mow your lawn just as easy as I could listen to my stories at a lower volume.

I understand that you need to mow, so do I, but just because the law says you can be out behind your mower doesn't mean it's an appropriate time at 8am.

Why is 8am unreasonable? If you're going by the law and your 10:59 pm standard, it says I can start at 6am. I don't see anyone advocating for that, but if you choose to move into a neighborhood with a bunch of young families, don't you expect yardwork at 8am on a Saturday?

Why should someone else inconvenience their entire day and rework their schedule because you moved into the house next door and decided you wanted to sleep late on the weekend?

Why should the rest of the neighborhood - who may be trying to relax and sleep in a bit on a weekend - have to listen to you mowing your lawn at 8am?

I can work upwards of 13-14 hour days during the week, I use the weekends to catch up on my sleep (and I'm not the only one), but that's okay you had your Wheaties, and your kid is up anyway so it's clearly time to be out with the weedwhacker.

On the rare occasions I can't sleep, or am out late with friends I try respectful in my comings/goings/late night habits...but you people can't do the same because the sun's out?

If you came to me and bitched at me for mowing my yard at 10am, i'm gonna throw up a finger and tell you where you can go.

10am is completely reasonable. I agree 8am is a grey area, 9am is fine, and by 10am you're undeniably clear.

But it's not. I mow early for several reasons, and not one of them is to "fuck my neighbor". It gets HOT AS FUCK in the summer by 10 am. Shit...it's hot as fuck at 8 am...but it's considerably cooler early in the morning then it is at 10...and especially getting around noon.

Parking at the beach is also more difficult starting at noon. If I can get my yard work done by 10 and can be at the beach before 11 am...then I can find a better parking spot, beat the crowds for a good spot on the beach, and get my beach day started earlier.

In late August and September, getting the yard work done early allows me to be at the bar or comfortably on my couch at my own house and ready for football by noon. I love having all of my yard work and projects done early on Saturday so I have the rest of the day to fuck around and watch football.

There is no ill-intent when I do my yard work early. There are a ton of reasonable reasons for me to get my yard work done early.

Of course you can ignore health and discomfort reasons of doing yard work in direct sun and 90+ degree heat.

8 am is unreasonable because plenty of people are still trying to sleep at that hour. 9 am, in my book, is questionable. 10 is the hour, because almost nobody is trying to sleep past then, other than college kids and 3rd shift workers.

He isn't saying that the letter of the law, 10:59 is reasonable. He's saying that while it's legal, it's unreasonable...much like mowing at 8 am.

But it is.

I know you aren't doing it out of malice or an active desire to prevent people from sleeping. Nobody is saying that. I'm saying that a group of you are saying "Everybody should be up a 8 am on a Saturday. My schedule is more important than theirs. I don't give a shit if I wake them up. That's their problem, not mine."

That makes you a fucking inconsiderate asshole.

Dude, you are so not getting it. It doesn't make any difference what your beach schedule is, or when you like to watch TV, or if it's hot outside in the summer. It isn't OK to be a fucking asshole to other people so that you can do everything you want at the times you want.

Mow in the evenings after work. Do the shit late in the afternoon AFTER you get back from the beach. Buy a reel mower and manual edger that don't make any noise, and just do the weed-eating during those more acceptable times and the rest of it as ass-early as you want. Hell, I'm guessing that an electric weed-eater is quiet enough that you wouldn't wake neighbors with it. Buy one of those; they're $100 or less. Do what you need to do to maintain your precious schedule, or suck it up and deviate from it, but don't be an asshole to everyone else.

You dumbasses aren't citing the main reason that I always mention FIRST.

Its hot as motherfuckingshit from 10am-noon during the summer.

It's still hot at 8am...but its considerably cooler. I should subject myself to physical discomfort of doing yard work in extreme heat so you can sleep for an extra hour??

How about I get my shit done early, and you can sleep that extra hour whenever you want to during the day...or just deal with it.

Seriously...if it were 70 degrees at 8am and only 80 at 10 am and my neighbor respectfully asked that I mow the yard later so he could get some sleep, I would gladly oblige (unless it was a dickhead neighbor...of course). But we're talking about the difference between 85 degrees and 95-100. I'm not subjecting myself to labor and extreme heat so you can feel better rested.

I push a reel mower, edge the yard with a weedeater, and pull weeds every weekend.

There are normally extra jobs such as laying out pinestraw, pulling out dead plants/planting new ones, trimming bushes, etc. Most of these jobs involve heading to Lowe's or the local nursery....which pushes the yard work into 10 or 11am (or 1 and 2pm if I let you my awesome neighbor sleep a little more).

I think if you have a problem with your neighbor doing then you should say something.

Unless told otherwise by neighbors, I would assume that 8-9 AM is fair game for me. If I was asked to stop or do it later, I'd try to be more courteous and respectful and push it back an hour.

Funny thing is that we're arguing about 8am....8am!! You would think it's about someone pulling out the chainsaw at 6am with the roosters!

And not that it matters....but I only do yard work early on Saturdays. My neighbors can always sleep in on Sundays! And I'm such a good neighbor that if my neighbor could only sleep in on Saturday, then I would move my yardwork to Sunday (as long as he wasn't a dick, and it didn't fuck up my other neighbor's "sleeping in" habits).

^^^^^^ dude nobody gives a fuck how hot you are or when you do it. Pick a cooler day, do it in the evenings, hire someone else to do it when it's hot, use manual or electric tools, whatever. Don't be a fucking asshole, and definitely don't be a fucking asshole and pretend that somehow it's OK and everyone else is wrong.

I live in Florida. It's hot as fuck. I have maintained a house and yard by myself, with a young child to tend to, and a full-time job. I've even done it with a manual mower. I spread several tons of rocks in one planted area last summer, too. I hit the beach and did all the recreational stuff I wanted to do, and got it all done, and never once did loud shit early in the morning.

You are right in that it doesn't matter. You shouldn't get to dictate when your neighbors sleep. That is some sort of crazy, sociopathic thinking.

^^^^^ 8 am is too early unless you check and everyone says it's OK, which is totally possible. 9 am is prob OK, and reasonable if you're willing to be courteous and accommodating if someone asked you to move it back. One better would be to ask your neighbors what time they normally get up on weekends. I say 10 in the absence of other information, because that's almost certainly safe.

If your entire day is ruined because you sweat a little more (it's hot), you had to walk a little further to beach access (I'm lazy), or because you missed kickoff (damn, they ended the game right after that too) then you need to re-evaluate your life in general.

It's not the grass mowing that's the end of the world; it's the completely broken thought process and the social dysfunction necessary to do this shit and sincerely defend it.

I'm not knocking any of your personal reasoning with regards to this, but not everyone on this board lives in an area where summer is unbearably hot.

i, for one, enjoy mowing on Sunday around 6:30pm. the sun isn't as hot, there's typically a little breeze, the first round of football games is over, and it's a perfect gap before dinnertime/primetime football kickoff

My grass is usually too wet to do anything before 9 or 10 AM anyway.

Whoop tee fuckin do. I pulled out and cut down two mid-sized trees, tilled an entire yard and laid down sod, built a garden bed and put-up a tool-shed....wooohooo!! we're all men, lets jerk off!!

The point isn't that I can't do work in extreme heat...its that it makes sense to do it when its cooler. Its common fucking sense.

You gotta mow Bermuda once a week during the summer. But don't worry, I'll wait for that one cool day in the month of July when it's cool so you can sleep in on Saturday. Meanwhile...just ignore the jungle that is now my backyard. Or...I can just pay another couple grand to get some different grass that doesn't do as well in these conditions so that you can sleep later. No problem.

How about you pay for it, Maverick? Since you value so much your extra two hours of sleep per week that can only be gotten between the hours of 8-10am on Saturdays. Sounds like it would be worth it to you.

Actually only use both. But that electric weed-eater can get pretty loud!!

You know that this is exactly what you're doing? To a lot of other people 8am is reasonable, to others it is a gray area, and to others, it's not reasonable at all. Although I'm not saying I'm 100% right...I'm definitely not 100% wrong (like you are claiming).

Definitely. I'm assuming most of the people in this argument are from NC and further down South. Definitely not implying that this all encompassing for the entire US.

As an aside, we mow our yard at 7:30 pm on Tuesday evenings.

I mow mine on weekday evenings when I have Saturday plans and/or will be out of town.

My grass is fickle though. It's pretty much set up on a week schedule and it definitely looks its best when that schedule is tightly kept.
