I realize that I don't have a great conception of large numbers/values. Videos like this help me to understand the sheer magnitude of speed and force involved.

well realistically a trip to mars would require a stay on the surface around that long because of the way the planets line up to make the return trip feasible.

Fuck yeah.Every time I read up on advancements like this, I think of this comic.Which is to say, lots of folks wonder where all of our crazy sci-fi stuff is now, but that stuff is only amazing because it's unrealized fiction. In genre -- and in reality -- many of our advancements seem mundane when we encounter them daily. Though I still think it's cool that many of our sci-fi staples are becoming reality. I don't. In the Roach book, they talked about the difficult of connecting not only neural pathways but the various blood vessels. I think there were several legitimate concerns raised:- difficulty of rehabilitating nerve cells (spinal cord links especially)- host rejection of the new head- issues of circulation- what medical board will let you decapitate someone in an experimental procedureEven with the monkey thing and an optimistic view, I just don't see how you overcome these problems

It seems like I saw that this is how they are teaching it in school now as well?
5/15/2015 9:19:26 AM
It's possible? I teach English, but my understanding of Common Core is that tries to build the foundational concepts of how math functions in order to facilitate learning things like algebra and calc later on, so I wouldn't be surprised if they taught multiple ways of looking at arithmetic. I know that adding and multiplication are taught differently now.
5/15/2015 9:28:22 AM
I actually taught a course called "Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers"...basically, I taughtthem all these new-fangled ways of thinking about mathematics, which they were then supposed to impart to their future classesthere was a heavy emphasis on drawings, and a lot of conceptual nuances...e.g. you can think of 15/3 as dividing 15 into 3 groups of 5, or 5 groups of 3it struck me as slightly over-the-top and retarded in its emphasis on underlying thought-processes...I don't think the American teaching-style is the problem, but just that American children are lazy, fat and entitled
5/15/2015 12:15:33 PM
I disagree. I saw an excellent analogy on reddit that basically explained it like building a house. If you lack principles/foundation (har har har) of house construction, you can probably build a structure that will stand, but the farther you build the more unstable it becomes. Math at the basic level is often taught in a "You don't need to know this" or "This is just how it's done" and not a "This is why it's done this way" or "This is how this works." For a large portion of my life in geometry, I knew what Pi was -- and that it went on forever -- but not why it was. I think it's also a use or lose it thing. I remember doing parametric equations in high school (something with ships colliding, I think?). At this point, I do know what they are or what they're for. Additionally, I had a decent trig foundation, but trig equalities were difficult to keep straight, which made Trig/Algebra II more challenging when we did that stuff and made statics even harder, even though I felt good about basic free body diagrams.
5/15/2015 1:53:59 PM
they just need to teach physics (or some other application) at the same time that the math is being taught
5/15/2015 2:12:05 PM
I took Physics II at the same time as Calc AB in high school and it was super helpful. I think moving back toward an application/manipulatives model helps too. Physics was so helpful because it wasn't abstract
