nah i don't think i would go that far. we should definitely starve them a little, though. food is for people who work.[Edited on August 25, 2013 at 5:22 PM. Reason : .]

no one unfortunately

the homeless and the rabble that hang around the bus station down there have gotten worse and worse over the years. I understand the POV of the people who live there. I dont know how many times I was threatened walking to my car at night when I worked down there.
8/25/2013 5:41:07 PM
Doesn't the bible specifically say something about giving a man a biscuit and coffee, you only feed him for a day. Teach a man to make biscuits and coffee, and he gets a job at Bojangles and gets off the streets? These hacks clearly aren't religious...
8/25/2013 5:46:51 PM
^that isn't in the bible

8/25/2013 6:03:19 PM
that's racist. I'm white and I love watermelon
8/25/2013 6:03:25 PM
Fuck seedless watermelons. They really lack in flavor.
8/25/2013 6:09:28 PM
do the homeless in Raleigh have smart phones?a lot of SF bums have iPhones and are pretty fat. pisses me off
8/25/2013 6:10:59 PM
Direct action was taken today and the Mayor called off police from arresting anyone. Several groups showed up to feed the homeless and it went off without incident (because of the mayor calling Police off).Love Wins is a faith based group, but the homeless are fed no questions asked. They don't have to hear a sermon first for example. There is no catch. Love wins also tries to help where it can to get these people out of their situation in jobs etc. So it is more than just feeling good about themselves for a few hours. This latest crackdown comes from an effort to further gentrify Raleigh and therefore to push those less fortunate to the "other Raleigh" we all like to pretend doesn't exist.
8/25/2013 6:14:20 PM
sounds like you work for Love Wins
8/25/2013 6:16:43 PM
^ No I am in VT now but I followed the story and a friend of mine's brother in law heads it up.
8/25/2013 6:21:37 PM
where is this "other raleigh" located?

Hey brotha, can you spare some change?STOP THREATENING ME, YOU DIRTY NIGGER
8/25/2013 7:27:37 PM
I didn't read this, but I don't want our parks being homeless shelters or soup kitchens. It's like feeding a stray. The more you do it, the more they will come back and the more that will join them.
8/25/2013 7:29:05 PM
and by promises, i meant to pay you back. which they don't do. because they're bums
8/25/2013 7:33:50 PM
^^
8/25/2013 7:44:46 PM
^^^i was talking to someone about this today and they made the "feeding the geese" analogy. I do understand this group has nothing but good intentions. I also understand that in a way it could be seen as enabling the stagnation of that group of folks. I'm torn personally... Yes it would be great to get them off the street and into productive roles, but again it just seems wrong to not have some sort of compassion and understanding of their immediate food needs.
8/25/2013 8:00:35 PM
i would like all of our parks to be homeless tent cities. no parks until we have enough actual shelters.adultswim for mayor 2014
8/25/2013 8:02:47 PM
I think we should make the homeless work for what is given to them. What is the incentive for them to better themselves, if all we do is hand them all they need? Make them clean up litter for a sandwich. Make them do landscaping in the park for a cot.
8/25/2013 8:07:05 PM
This is literally why we can't have nice things.....
8/25/2013 8:07:28 PM
8/25/2013 8:08:32 PM
^^^sounds good in principle, but minimum wage laws and ACLU lawyers would come into play and demand minimum wage pay for these people since they are working blah blah blah and then the funds are all dried up.[Edited on August 25, 2013 at 8:12 PM. Reason : ]
8/25/2013 8:11:20 PM
Just push them to a place where people without as much political influence live and work -- until its time to gentrify that area. Rinse, repeat.
8/25/2013 8:11:24 PM
8/25/2013 8:12:03 PM
^when you make being homeless more pleasant that incentive (and your argument) goes away.
8/25/2013 8:13:37 PM
This is sad.
8/25/2013 8:13:45 PM
Just arrest them for petty crimes, and sentence them to community service. Then there is no real payment needed. It becomes charity.
8/25/2013 8:13:46 PM
^^^shelter and food alone are not what makes life pleasant, though. especially shitty shelter and shitty food.[Edited on August 25, 2013 at 8:15 PM. Reason : .]
8/25/2013 8:14:44 PM
^^extensive criminal records would put up another barrier for them getting a real job and getting out of the public assistance rut. ^"pleasant" is relative of course, but fed and sheltered is much better than starving and exposed, regardless of the quality of the roof and food.[Edited on August 25, 2013 at 8:18 PM. I guess if you paid $300k for a 1 br condo in Raleigh (lol), it would be distressing to see poor black people nearby, especially for someone raised in the south.
8/25/2013 8:49:28 PM
were they really homeless people, or just rich hipsters who live downtown that dress like homeless people because they like to go against the norm and be original with their tattered threads?
8/25/2013 8:52:11 PM
Most of the comments in this thread are too disgusting to even respond to.
8/25/2013 9:02:35 PM
If churches were interested in actually helping the homeless, they'd pick them up, bring them into their own homes, and talk to them about their lives. These people need human connection, not food.
8/25/2013 9:27:52 PM
Yes.Threatened. Followed. Twice physically attacked. I am 6' 220lb male. Can't imagine any females would feel safe alone after midnight. If you live there, that's a huge issue. But hey, since it never happened to you it must never happen huh?The vast majority of those folks are gentle and helpless but there are a lot of unsavory people as well.
8/25/2013 10:02:01 PM

BtwI'm not arguing against helping homeless people. I am understanding the perspective of the people who live down there and I think that there is a better way to manage this.
8/25/2013 10:17:21 PM
It's funny to me that this is a thing, but the woman who sells candy out of her van, takes up parking spaces for 48+ hours at a time, and is a public health problem is NOT a thing.
8/26/2013 12:39:46 AM
you don't have to be against feeding the homeless to be against feeding them in the parkthere are multiple shelters and soup kitchen within walking distance of that park, all we are asking is that they use one of those facilities or a public space where they live so they see the full effects of their actions
8/26/2013 8:10:54 AM
Everyone wants their feel-good fix for handing out Jesus Biscuits in the park to the needy, but when it comes to the long-term negative side effects of their actions they all want to bury their heads in the sand ostrich style. And looking at those pictures, I see a lot of clean clothes wearing, non homeless looking folks standing in line. If you're handing out Jesus Biscuits and coffee for free, every Saturday and Sunday, no questions asked, how many of those people are really homeless, vs people just passing through b/c they know they can get free food and coffee? Isn't the city bus terminal about 100 yards away? If you had 20 minutes until your Cat bus showed up and you didn't want to pay for breakfast, Jesus Biscuits are right there.
