I realize this thread is about living with your parents and feeling the need to justify your situation to The Wolf Web, also called TWW or T-Dub... which I do not. Hear me out, maybe I can offer some insight.I am in outside sales, which is currently salary+commission, but will move into straight commission starting at the beginning of July 2010. I have been in this position since July 2009. I have competition from several direct manufacturing sales reps, large distributors, and local distributors. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each:Direct Advantages: Immediate knowledge of new technology, no middle man mark up, one shipping bill (paid by manufacturer or buyer of goods), access to larger range of non-commodity items, control inventory, have access to many distributors that can effectively sell their goods which increases market share, and set prices of commodity they manufacture.Direct disadvantages: Typically have 1-3 sales reps per region (i.e. southeast, mid-atlantic, northeast, etc.) limiting the number of accounts they can successfully manage/cold-call, lack physical customer service or physical technical service available to or affordable for smaller users or altogether, are sometimes not trustworthy because they will go in behind their distributors that sell their commodity to one account in large quantities (i.e. they missed a big account, and have found out about it through a distributor selling their particular product) which leads to the distributor not selling their product anymore, have too many distributors selling the product ultimately driving the set price down through deviations, possibly rely on distributors to actually sell the product, and competition from other direct sources.Large distributor advantages: have access to other commodities that go hand in hand with other manufacturers (poor example- grocery stores sell milk as well as cereal), get direct pricing, many locations regionally or nationally easing the shipping burden of buyers with multiple locations, personal service either customer or technical, many sales reps that are able to cover a broader territory, access to multiple manufacturers of the same commodity allowing to keep prices in check, service programs that smaller companies can't offer and direct providers can't match in price or value, and experts of many many commodities as opposed to one or a few.Large distributor disadvantages: smaller local distributors creating price wars (think Michael Scott Paper Co vs Dunder-Mifflin), direct mfg's going in behind and stealing business, limited access to all of the mfg's (you won't find Harris Teeter name brands in Food Lion and visa versa), can't truly set prices because it's based on both supply and demand, territory management, and tough growth prospects in slower economies (this is true for direct as well really)Local distributor advantages: Typically a good ol' boy setting where the seller and the buyer know each other for years (this does happen at all levels, but mostly at the local level), local folks are right down the street and can be used in emergencies, if the local guy buys at high enough volumes then there is no shipping charge to the end user, and access to both direct mfg's and large distributors.Local distributor disadvantages: easily beaten in price, array of commodities, array of technology, lack of trained staff, low cash flow, etc etc etc. This is what I have noticed in my six months, I am sure there are plenty more that need mentioning. The way I am setting myself apart as a sales person is this: I go after the big accounts right now while I am new. The big accounts, if I land them, will take care of me while I am new and building a customer base. The money made off of those allows me to focus free time on smaller accounts that get me higher margins. I build up big accounts, I would like to have 5-10 of these, then get 20-30 medium accounts. If I lose 1 or 2 big accounts, the 20-30 medium accounts keep me afloat while I go after new big accounts. I don't really waste time on small accounts simply because they basically pay for breakfast or something really small.I will say this, if you can't get a big account in the first 6-8 months (assuming you have cash flow that you can ride this long) you could be in a world of trouble. If you can get one, it will really make going after the others a lot more enjoyable and less stressful. It's simply just very exhausting wasting any time on anything other than big accounts in the very beginning. You work just as hard on the medium sized accounts and see 1/3 to 1/36 of the money in my situation. If you have any other questions, you can PM me. I hope this helps in the slightest!

Sup fellows,I'm out in Arizona, just north of Phoenix, out in the desert, teaching photography for the next few weeks. I finished up my first proof of concept Led flood lamp today; its a 9x9x3" light panel with 420 LED's that's about ~3000 lumens and uses less than 40w of power with a dimmer switch on the back. It's not pretty, but its more a less to figure out the chassis and basic wiring. I'm going to build a simple 8 AA battery tray for it so I can use it as a mobile light panel tomorrow.I ran into the PR person of the campus that I'm teaching at and told her my LED start up company and she was really interested in me designing custom LED lamps for their entire campus as I told them some cool ideas of what I would do if I owned the place. She's introducing me to the campus owners and board of directors later in the week to pitch them some ideas of LED lighting, plus presenting them with a proper marketing campaign, tell them what they need to do about trademarking their brand and give them some clue about how they need to conduct themselves as a business entity to grow and expand their educational programs. The main owner died just in April, so the campus hasn't gotten anything done and all of the lower employees are in a sorta limbo about what the future holds. Plus they want me to do some new updated photo's and video of the place since I brought along about 200lbs of photo/video gear, including a full desktop PC and 24" LCD... I only brought about 5 day's worth of clothes so I'll be doing a lot of laundry. I also networked with some other random people out in LA and SanFran; might make a trip out there for a week and do some industry connect before I jet off to Hawaii. Maybe see about getting a tech tour of some companies around Silicon Valley.

I just got back to Raleigh Monday after two weeks in Hawaii and before that, three weeks in Arizona. I hired on a new part time employee, another wolf webber, for a shoot last weekend covering a fundraising cyclist event in Clemmons, NC while I was away on my travels. I've connected with over a dozen architects, including a professor at ASU and a retired Dean of Boston Architectural College, while I was out at Arcosanti in Arizona doing photography. While I was in Hawaii, I did industry connects with a production company there and hanged out with the production crew who shoot Hawaii Five-O and was at their season 4 premier. I made friends with a DEA agent who also worked as a part time park ranger, who showed me around the Oahu island and gave me detail snorkeling tours in more remote, non-public areas. I also talked my way into having access to the Dole pineapple plantation and scored contact information with their marketing director after shooting video so I'm hoping to have a quick video edited to show them my quality of work by next week or so.I also ran into a really good, professional makeup artist on the Beach in Waikiki and chatted up a storm with her so she is going to keep me appraised about photography/film work out in LA and California in general as she does high end makeup for fashion and large weddings. I also have a loosely tentative music video project out in LA next spring for an upcoming singer who I also meet out in Hawaii. Then on the plane ride back home, I sat next to a senior partner for the Texas Roadhouse restaurant chain; he was very interested in having me do some photo/film work as well as the possibility of building custom LED lights for some of their new restaurants after I showed him my portfolio and proof of concept design on my phone.I also started pre-production and planning work for the machinima project about a clerks 2 inspired zombie Apocalypse comedy based on the latest Unreal Engine game engine from EPIC games and project leading about 10 people thus far and the list keeps on growing, but its going to be a year long+ project. I already have the escapist magazine willing to publish our web series and may expand it to other media outlets down the road. I'm also covering the Escapist Expo this weekend and have a production crew of about 3 people who are going to be with me shooting film and interviews of the event and should be great fun.Next week, I jet off to Richmond, VA to renovate a friend's house for a week; return back to Raleigh the weekend of the 12th to shoot a dance recital and then I'll most likely head down to Miami for 3 days for a video gig during the week with my old photography boss. I have another dance recital the weekend of the 19th in NC again. The following weekend, I return back to Richmond, VA to finish up more construction work. Then the weekend of the 26th, I have a friend's wedding to attend in Florida. That sums up my schedule for just October...November is the renovation of my parents 5600 sq ft house, or the very least the start of cleaning and fixing up the garage and kitchen for the next 3-4 months, while I muster the production of the landscaping job as well.
10/2/2013 6:16:07 PM
5,600 square feet? Sure about that?[Edited on October 3, 2013 at 10:03 AM. Reason : agreed to remove]
10/2/2013 6:57:01 PM
Wtf
10/2/2013 6:59:19 PM
^^ That's some fucked up trolling right there. I know it's public record, but posting someone's tax information and home address on here is a pretty asshole move.
10/2/2013 7:10:04 PM
Yeah, what an asshole. As for the area, who cares. And if you look at the acreage, it corresponds to 16,000+ sq ft, so maybe is including the patio or the garden or whatever.
10/2/2013 7:14:57 PM
Heated area is the actual square footage of the house. And yep-that shit is public record. My point is this dude is full of shit and can't be honest about something that doesn't even really matter...
10/2/2013 7:39:00 PM
The records are wrong. It's a 5 bedroom, 3 story house, 3.5 Baths and the dimensions of the first floor are a bit off as well. It's probably more in the 4500 sq ft heated range, but I was including deck and garage since I'm renovating the entirety of it.
