some of you people don't remember what it was like to be a student and have to stay at the library til the wee hours to get something done, especially at exam time.

OK so being a student excuses stupidity? Even if you did have to pull a all nighter, a woman with good self awareness knows that its not a smart move. Yea no one SHOULD be out to rape, but if you're not walking alone with no protection you cant get raped.
4/26/2013 2:31:10 PM
4/26/2013 2:32:00 PM
I'm not sure why she needs an excuse. Are you or are you not saying that walking alone at 4am is asking to be raped?I'm Krallum and I approved this message.
4/26/2013 2:32:54 PM
Are you or are you not trying to bait me into blaming the victim? I'm saying nothing good happens at 4 am on a dark campus. The end.
4/26/2013 2:36:13 PM
No matter how many rules are put in place, it will never be safe to walk alone at 4 am.I think the university does owe the students some amount of protection on university property though. Kids focusing on their education shouldn't have to worry about being robbed or raped on the way back to their bed from the library. There shouldn't be any dark spots on common walking paths, there should be cameras everywhere, and there should be roaming police officers at night on commonly traveled paths.Everything in this WolfAlert places some amount of blame on the victim.
4/26/2013 2:45:13 PM
^^you sound like an old coot on golo. "Nothing good ever happens after dark!"
4/26/2013 2:50:11 PM
^^^I just don't understand what you're complaining about. All you have done in this thread is point out the things that (in your opinion) she did wrong. I'm not trying to bait shit. You're the one who called her stupid.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

i bet 5 girls have gotten raped in the dorms by guys they kinda knew and won't report since this happened. maybe you just shouldn't trust anyone at 4 am
4/26/2013 2:55:55 PM
4/26/2013 3:03:46 PM
Oh yea anyone who dares mention that this "victim" didn't make the best decision is blaming her. Yall are fucking idiots if you think she couldn't have prevented this by being proactive with her security.
4/26/2013 3:27:13 PM
4/26/2013 3:42:10 PM
So you want more campus security but refuse to pay more tuition? Good luck with that.
4/26/2013 3:47:08 PM
Can we agree that they could be allocating their resources away from busting students drinking and doing more to prevent this type of stuff maybe?
4/26/2013 3:50:56 PM
No because imagine the amount of rapes if you have drunk vaginas walking around at 4 am.
4/26/2013 3:56:23 PM
and I would say that underage drinking leads to WAAAAAAY more rapes than walking across campus at 4AM
4/26/2013 3:59:12 PM
How about drinking in general leads to more rapes than anything else. Statutory rape is a totally different beast imo and not what this thread is about.I'm Krallum and I approved this message./]
4/26/2013 4:01:44 PM
It's never the fault of the victim and not all victims could have prevented being the victim of an assault. A rape that occurs at 4 am to someone who is walking alone is no less heinous and despicable that a rape that occurs in broad daylight. That being said, I think everyone should exercise a modicum of self-protection. Don't walk alone at night, lock your doors, avoid low-light areas, etc.
4/26/2013 4:09:19 PM
^ True, but we all do things against our better judgement. As I said in CB, it was a calculated risk she took walking through there at 4AM. I am sure she knew it was a bad idea, but probably decided to go for it. She probably had the "it would never happen to me" mentality. It's no different than the many of us who have had 1 to many at the bar but decide to chance the drive home. We know it's a bad idea, but we figure we will be able to pull it off just this one time.[Edited on April 26, 2013 at 4:17 PM. Reason : a]

People shouldn't be walking by themselves at 4AM if they can avoid it.But it's a douchey thing to tell this to someone that was sexually assaulted, just after they were assaulted.95% of the time, you CAN walk alone by yourself, at 4AM, without issue.
4/26/2013 4:15:43 PM

4/26/2013 6:57:49 PM
They should bring back Student Patrol.
4/26/2013 7:07:41 PM
Did it actually happen at 4 am? Because I'm pretty sure it says reported. Granted, could've only been a few minutes between the report and when it ended.Regardless, a lot of the comments on here are ridiculous. Walking on a school campus at 4 am doesn't mean she's to blame. Is a girl who wears a short skirt to blame? I could go on, but I'm tired. Ultimately, I realize common sense says to go with a buddy but to think people don't stay at the library late studying or something and walk back alone is unrealistic. Students shouldn't have to be scared walking around campus, or anywhere
4/26/2013 7:39:40 PM
I am really tired of people interpreting calling out someone for using bad judgement as the same as someone deserved any tragedy that occurred to them[Edited on April 26, 2013 at 7:53 PM. Reason : ]
4/26/2013 7:51:26 PM
It's one thing to point out that she probably could have used better judgment and maybe avoided this by not being in that spot and saying it's her fault. No one should have to worry about being assaulted or robbed, etc. but it does happen, so try to minimize the risk.
4/26/2013 7:56:52 PM
^^Then pick a better time/place to talk about it.In the real-world, the context of statements matter. If you juxtapose someone being sexually assaulted with the statement "that person shouldn't have been walking by themselves" you're showing a gross lack of sympathy, which makes it seem like you're trying to dismiss the crime committed against them. You wouldn't talk about cancer so flippantly around someone dying of cancer, or go to a funeral and talk about how bad a person is.There's a time and place to say things, or a more sympathetic way to say something, and if you choose to ignore these realities, then be prepared to be called a dick.

They stopped student patrol??In any event SPO ends at 3am and after that campus police to the escortsAnd having escorts camped out at every location is asinine too much ground to cover there's like 4 campuses serviced and a few totally random locations that I was shocked to learn people actually used and worked in at the hours they didShit i remember one time a SPO got robbed while walking back the van after completing an escort over by UT got shot at and everything all up in a well lit area[Edited on April 27, 2013 at 5:12 AM. ^^sadly, the only person sounding dickish is youMORON: THE END-ALL-BE-ALL OF WHAT'S APPROPRIATE, AND WHEN!!1!this point has been rehashed a million times. bad things are always going to happen, and the vast majority of the time will happen to people in vulnerable situations. you can be as PC as you want, but you're an idiot if you think people should blindly ignore risks because "it's not my fault if it does actually happen"

you seem confused. no one on here has addressed the victim directly.and i'm also confused at YOUR confusion regarding your perceived lack of tact on TWW. you new here?that article has zero bearing on this, regardless. this girl had a hell of a lot more say in her situation than someone with breast cancer.ergo,
4/27/2013 7:46:59 PM
Also, everyone in the entire world knows that you're more likely to get robbed/assaulted when walking at night. The only reason anyone would choose to repeat this after someone gets robbed/assaulted is to make themselves sound smarter to other people, as if they have some sage knowledge that no one else realizes. When the reality is they are just making themselves sound like an arrogant prick by loudly proclaiming what's pretty common knowledge. That's yet another reason why you sound like a dick, when your first thought after hearing someone get's sexually assaulted was "well, you shouldn't have been there."Same goes for that smoker with lung cancer. They have been told their entire lives they would get cancer, they may have even tried to quit at one point because of this, they KNOW why they're there. They don't need some self-righteous asshole who THINKS he has drank the mana of gods that bestowed him with the knowledge of "smoking causes cancer" to tell them that smoking does, in fact, cause cancer. They just need sympathy for their impending death. If humans all made the perfect choices all the time, we wouldn't be human. The fact that this girl was even in college makes me think she's doing something right, and she has my sympathy for being assaulted, without my snide, thinly veiled judgment of "she shouldn't have been there".Maybe she doesn't deserve sympathy, but i'd be a DICK for assuming she doesn't.[Edited on April 27, 2013 at 7:50 PM.
