I wish there had been much more Sid in it. I get why there wasn't but this was a great opportunity to re-focus Sid's legacy as being '83, and let the 5 year debacle of him coaching the program start fading away. overall i'd be happy watching this on repeat all week. I thought the segment on V's downfall was fairly presented, and loved that they had Dave Didion speaking to the investigation. V wasn't perfect, but the perception a lot of folks have (walmart nation) is that he was directly involved in wrongdoing committed by individual players. even cooler was the twitter chatter from those with no connection to NCSU that were inspired by V and/or the '83 run, most notably Chuck D.

I was so happy they put Sydney in there, but I agree I wish I would have saw more of him. It was nice to think of him and the connection he had with Coach V. Even at the events he attended while he was a coach, he rarely spoke of that bond he had. It would have been refreshing to hear!

I, too, wish there was more Sid and less Whitt. But it was a great documentary. Thurl was great, and Gannon's anecdotes were priceless. Even Ernie Myers came off as pretty well spoken and intelligent (didn't know much about him, except he's married to Annabelle). Really impressive group of guys. The part where Thurl is helping V up on the chair .... chills.

i wonder why Sid didn't show up at the restaurant or wherever all the other players met in person
3/18/2013 10:54:45 AM
He was probably busy with his job coaching in Utah. A low-end assistant is going to get a lot of lee-way when he asks if he can take a couple days off to sit around a table, drink, eat, and talk basketball.

^^I'm not sure when they filmed it, but it seemed like the group scene was shot in one day
3/18/2013 10:59:09 AM
IIRC it was shot one afternoon in June of last year.

the clips of the houston/louisville game looked superhuman.

maybe Ernie left a bad taste in his mouth.also, Ralph Sampson himself was super human. Hate injuries plagued his pro career. ]
3/18/2013 1:18:06 PM
yeah watching those clips, we definitely don't see games like that, even in highlight reels these days.Maybe there's something to the folks who say the three point shot killed basketball. I never thought much of it before, but it seems like it would create a greater incentive to hone perimeter shooting vs driving and slashing. I can't imagine defense has holistically improved since then. Fuck it, I blame Karl Hess.I think we can all agree that the shot clock was a good idea though.

For those interested, Amazon has the dvd for pre-order. Its slated to be released May 17t. Cost is $14.95I'll definitely have to buy it (although i'll probably wait until it drops to <$10 like all of the other ones have).http://www.amazon.com/ESPN-Films-30-Survive-Advance/dp/B00BSWMJWQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363630409&sr=8-1&keywords=survive+and+advance

0 people didn't know that was players retreat(though many people pointed it out thinking they would look smarter than others)

It was great, but one thing I didn't understand.... it showed Whittenburg driving down Hillsborough St in the beginning. I assume he was driving to PR, or Reynolds, or maybe Dematha. But he was traveling down Hillsborough towards the fairgrounds (you see the Waffle House). Now that doesn't make any any sense! [Edited on March 18, 2013 at 2:19 PM. Reason : ]

Sid might not have wanted to get back behind NC borders and get arrested for that 190% Tax Evasion!!
3/18/2013 2:27:06 PM
i dont think ive ever been inside
3/18/2013 2:27:10 PM
I really like the PR and still try to go there a few times a year. My dad and I usually go when he's in town, since it was here when he was a student.
3/18/2013 2:32:23 PM
3/18/2013 2:39:10 PM
I saw some on facebook criticizing the choice to use PR, but I think its the best place. Where else would you go? Amedeo's is a poorly lit dump, Mitch's is pretty small, Two Guys is a lot different now and looks pretty dumpy. At least PR has some nice curb appeal, I think it was the best choice.
3/18/2013 2:47:04 PM
I think it was easily the best choice.
3/18/2013 2:47:56 PM

^I would have thought that he would turn left at Gorman Street then, instead of continuing on past the Waffle House. (it really didn't bother me though, I just noticed it and found it amusing )
3/18/2013 2:53:49 PM
Pretty sure he was leaving the funeral/burial of his friend Lorenzo and drove through a familiar part of town on his way out of Raleigh.I think it was just him taking some time to reminisce.
3/18/2013 2:55:54 PM
yep, that may be right. i was just picking, you gotta get all serious

Speaking of Lorenzo Charles, does anybody know if his grave is near Valvano's? I've been to V's multiple times, but didn't realize Charles was buried there until somebody mentioned it earlier ITT.
3/18/2013 3:11:13 PM
Yes, if you're looking at V's grave, it's to the right down the little slope. You see the strutting wolf logo from the road.
3/18/2013 3:14:04 PM
literally like 20ft away from Valvano

Not going to lie, I was ing a few times through this. Especially the last part about Jimmy's notes with dreams he left in his jacket.
3/18/2013 4:33:32 PM
Saw on Facebook that apparently Amedeos was used for some of the interviews, while the PR was used for the player's reunion. If I had to pick 3 places to use it'd be these 2 and Mitch's, but Amedeos and the PR have far more NCSU memorabilia all over the walls.
3/18/2013 6:02:19 PM
if those guys had gone to amedeo's, they'd have been the youngest people there
3/18/2013 10:13:04 PM
A beautiful film all around that should be required viewing for every NC State incoming Freshman
3/18/2013 10:33:31 PM
Absolutely amazing. And despite what some may say, I have UNC friends that have gotten angry when someone says something negative about Jimmy V.
3/18/2013 10:45:37 PM
I feel lucky to be associated with this story, even though I wasn't alive during the run. Thanks to ESPN and Whittenburg for putting this together! What an amazing story!Jimmy V is a true inspiration.
