Lots of saltwater action in this thread.

Planning to do a lot of freshwater largemouth fishing here soon...hopefully some decent pics to follow.

I went and watched the weigh in on Monday, I had to work Wednesday, so I missed that one...and probably any that happen the rest of the tournament. I'm hoping to get some boat action in tomorrow when I get off work.

Does one need a fishing license to fish from a private dock, in say, the Bouge Sound or Pamlico River?

yes, you'll need a coastal recreational fishing license

parts of the pamlico river are inland waters and require an inland fishing license. make sure you know where you're fishing.

^I've always wondered that. How do they determine what it inland vs coastal for your fishing license needs?

I think it all depends on what type of fish you catch. When in doubt, just get both.

there's a line on a map that marks the boundary. there are signs on the bank on each side of the river or tributary that mark the boundary.

it has nothing to do with what kind of fish you catch.

[Edited on June 14, 2013 at 11:42 PM. Reason : $35 fine and $125 court cost i think]

If any of you recently had a kid (younger than 1) you can get the lifetime hunting a fishing license (both fresh and coastal) for 275 .

Way cheaper than if you buy it after 1 (almost 400) or after age 12 (575)

Plus the card has happy first birthday so my son will be able to remember what he actually got for his first birthday from his mom and I

^^That's what I'm planning on getting my niece for Christmas this year. I am also planning on my children receiving this. I do know that you have to specify salt water fishing on the license though now and it will cost just a little more.

Berkley LR40 Fly Rod for sale. 8' long, 5-6 wt line. I've never used it...Bought it at a yard sale for $10 IIRC and I'd like to get that back out of it. Looks almost new. I fish all the time with the rod/reel combos I have, but not looking to buy any more gear or pick up a new hobby so this has to go. Anyone have a use for this before I go to Craigslist?

One more...$10 takes it.

Shakespeare LX IV spinning reel combo. The bell doesn't close automatically when you start reeling, so you have to flip it closed by hand. Not sure if this is by design or defect, but it's not what I'm used to. Seems to work fine otherwise though. Haven't really used this, so I'll give a 15 day money back guarantee in case it doesn't work properly.

I'm pissed, I haven't gotten to fish in a while. I've been so busy with this damn move and the summer job that I can't go on the weekends on the boat.

Jeepin4x4 and I launched out of OI on Saturday for a suicide run; fishing was real slow but we scratched out a YFT and a wahoo. We both are need of good chiropractors after the boat ride out there.

anyone have experience fishing in or around oak island? going down there for a week in august and i'd like to go fishing a couple of times

i'm not a very good fisherman, if for no other reason than i don't know much (or bother to learn) about what's in the area and what kind of bait to use, so i figured i'd post early and see if folks have suggestions for that particular area

i'm happy to fish off a pier or in the waterways

few good piers to fish there. i fished Long Beach pier a lot, but i think they tore it down. Ocean Crest was right up the beach and it was good too. just go out there with a bottom rig and some fresh shrimp and see what happens.

i'd offer to take you out on my boat for some puppy drum and flounder, but i ain't gonna get on the water with the drunk 4th of july crowd. fuck that shit.

[Edited on June 28, 2013 at 8:03 PM. Reason : nvm, i see that you'll be there in august.]

Any of you saltwater fisherpeople tie your own rigs?

Gonna start tying my own fluorocarbon rigs after talking to some avid surf fisherman about how their tied rigs often out fish their store bought rigs.

Looking for a couple different rig patterns for surf fishing with shrimp and live finger mullet/mud minnows. Any suggestions on materials and/or websites to check out?

i tie all my own stuff. two hook bottom rigs, flounder rigs, fishfinder rigs, 3-way swivel rigs, etc. used to make my own king rigs with sevenstrand and wire when i king fished. what do you wanna do?

use a 2 hook bottom rig for fishing with shrimp. flounder rig for live bait. in the surf, i like to use no-roll sinkers instead of egg sinkers on my flounder rigs.

i went surf fishing a few weeks ago and im fine with store bought rigs

the ones i tied myself i made the leaders too flimsy and i just got twisted line everytime

if you go surfcasting afew times a year at best theres no reason to make your own rigs youll just be storing line too long and itll degrade before you really use it

i want to to my own fly fishing leaders though. Ive done almost no fly fishing this year...or any fishing other than vacation. Im bummed about it but ive got too much goin on and I havent been chilling with my fishing club guys theyve given up inviting me to fish

you need to use a barrel swivel at the top of the rig to keep it from getting twisted up. a small spool of flurocarbon is pretty cheap and it'll last plenty long enough if you keep it out of the sun. it only takes a few minutes to tie a bottom rig up.

i like to use 30# for most stuff. i use 15# for leaders on my artificials when trout fishing. 80# for fishfinder rigs like for cobia and drum fishing.

Here's what I did last week...

I want to rant for a bit....
So one of my really great friends, I love her to death, but I just need to get it out...

anyway, one of my friends, has a boyfriend, that just got a boat...well a boat about 4 months ago. Well she and him take it out every weekend. I get invited to go fish, or at least I'm told, "hey we're going fishing, do you want to come?" I'm always saying yes. I can't say no to fishing.

Well she doesn't like to fish. She would rather them take the boat out on their own so she can lie around topless and drink. I'm starting to think this is a waste of a boyfriend with a boat here. She isn't taking advantage of the fact that her boyfriend has a nice boat and wants to fish all the time. And I'm just freaking out wanting to fish. But all she wants to do it get sun and drink beer. I try to tell her it's possible to do both. We can go out and fish and she can drink beer while we are fishing, but she doesn't wanna go where it might be rough because it will get in her way of enjoying the boat ride.

So I am stuck sitting on shack

Monster shrimp invade US coastal waters... some as long as 17 inches

Highly predatory and might upset local ecosystems.

back on labor day 2013 i was fishing at the river with a friend and a game warden suddenly appeared behind us like a ninja asking for our fishing licenses. neither of us ever had one because we thought if you were in your home county using live bait you didnt actually need a fishing license. We were informed that you need a fishing license to fish any body of water that connects to another body of water. the only fishing areas that don't need a license are 100% landlocked on private land. If there is a tiny stream flowing from the pond then you need a license. in fact it doesnt matter if it is private land if that stream exists.

the fine was going to be $250 for each one of us plus court costs. we went to court and presented out licenses (we got them in the time before we had to go to court) and everything was dismissed and we paid nothing.

just felt like sharing

but no one ever gets fined for it. it's like getting a ticket for expired tags. you go renew your tags and it gets dropped.
