After all the shit I talked about California there's a decent chance I may end up there. Looking around at jobs and California is coming up an awful lot. Hawaii has been nice but it feels like time to get back to the mainland.

tbh, it's a pretty shitty time to be moving to CA. I expect to see massive corrections in real estate within the next 18 months. Rents and housing costs are astronomical and there are already signs that a huge round of layoffs are going to happen. It's a great place to live for the most part, but definitely not a great time to relocate here...

Not sure what his industry is, but yes, most good paying jobs (i.e. ones that earn you enough to either afford crazy high rents or a modest house) are located in SF/SJ/Oak (tech, finance, medicine, etc), LA (tech, finance, Hollywood, etc), SD (military and biotech), and to a lesser extent Sac (mostly gov't jobs). As of now, only 8% of people can afford to buy a home in SF proper, which has spilled out the nearly every direction in the Bay Area. LA has more inventory than the Bay Area, but it's still not cheap. If you can work from home, I'd say there are some nice coastal cities like San Luis Obispo or Ventura that are still affordable, but no real job centers to speak of.

It may be a large state, but a lot of it is nothing but forest (far northern CA) or barren desert (inland SoCal) or ag/farm land (Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, etc).

Hawaii to CA kinda seems like a lateral move to relocate at the moment.

Was offered 150k in Santa Barbara. Got really excited until researching cost of living.

150K
-55K for rent (3 room at least)
-60K for tax.

bringing home around 40K depends on how conservative the estimate was. Turn it down.

lol thats just not true. You can get a 3 bedroom for far less than 4500 a month. If you can't figure out how to live a nice life on 150k, you're doing it wrong. Forcing yourself to spend 4500 a month on rent in santa barbara is just not smart.

The taxes you have calculated are mostly federal taxes which have to be paid regardless of where you live.

Also the money you are "bringing home" shouldn't be calculated after living expenses. Thats more like a savings calculation.

I don't make anywhere near 150k, and life in the Bay Area can be a struggle at times. Anywhere else I'd be considered doing pretty well for myself, but not here. If you're married and have kids and want to have a decent life (i.e. not living in a tiny apartment or having multiple adult roommates), I wouldn't encourage people to move to the Bay Area, or most desirable parts of coastal CA these days unless you are making tons of money (150-200k isn't even enough to afford a 1M house in a good school district anymore, sadly). Santa Barbara is certainly nice, but not that far off from the Bay Area cost-wise. Not everyone wants the "California Lifestyle" of living in small quarters on top of one another. I'm used to it at this point, but I have met so many people that have been out for a year or two and have said fuck it, and are ready to move back to where they came from, or Seattle, Austin, Denver, Atlanta, etc.

How far is your commute to work? another word did you have to live outside of the city?

Most places I looked or is available on Zillow are 3.5k on average and above.

The house was on the west side between Mission and Cabrillo. 4 of us split the house, shared one room as an office/study and the last for storage. It was a great setup. My commute was 8 minutes. Before that I live in Goleta, $2400 for a 3-bedroom.

Now I live in a 2 bedroom cottage just outside of Hope Ranch. My individual rent is higher now, but it's just for this year until I move in with my fiancee.

Well, Santa Barbara has been incredible for these seven years, but it's time to move on. I'm going to miss the ocean views, celebrity sightings, no traffic ever, and perfect weather year round (at least when the mountains aren't on fire). But I've gotten an offer I can't refuse.

I'll be moving to Omaha this summer. All I know about it are steaks, a zoo, and Warren Buffet, but I'll be getting a 35% pay increase and I wouldn't be surprised if it's close to a 50% living expenses decrease.

I was def wrong about any housing correction, but anecdotally several friends have either gotten laid off in the last 3-6 months, or they've packed up and headed to Seattle and Austin for a lower COL life

I still think to have a decent life, you need to make a ton of money if you want to live in Coastal CA, and I don't ever see that changing. I'd be happy to be wrong though
