example: high school sports... gives student-athletes a sense of community, motivates them to do better academically and behaviorally, and builds networking and social skills - things they will use for the rest of their lives. The cost is negligible.

but hardly anyone wants to admit it.... we all want to be super sexy all the way down to wearing the most awfully non-comfortable panties ever thought of.

I love fully covering cotton underwear! (usually boyshorts)

A loose definition of "sorts" would cover almost all recreational activity that humans engage in. If the broad activities of sports and physical play didn't exist, then we would all be vegetables. It would be nonsense for anyone to object to these activities as a whole. When people complain about sports, they're generally complaining about professional sports.

sports for the purpose of exercise & fun or whatever is way different than professional sports. and professional (& college) sports are what i'm talking about.

i know you people aren't this stupid. we can keep pretending that you are if you'd like to continue arguing over my opinion though.

Why do you think this. The physical ability, dedication, skill, and training required to be an athlete at the highest level is incredibly rare. There are currently about 60 guys in the entire fucking world that are capable of being a serviceable or better NFL QB (and I'm being generous to all the backups and about half the starters in the league). As skillsets go that's about like being an astronaut in terms of rarity (I googled it, there are currently 56 people employed by NASA as active astronauts).

That game is played at such a high level that people will pay large sums of money to watch it. The same can be said for pretty much any professional sport. If people will pay large sums of money to watch something the economics then follow.

This is not a matter of debate.

high school sports have an element of spectator sport in it. It's a gateway to college / professional, which are even more spectator-oriented.

Even worse than the sort part of it is the band part of it. I feel sorry for everyone who committed the expensive and thankless hobby of marching band. That work would have been better spent on performances where people come to see you. And as for the big college games, they don't need bands, they don't need to exist in the first place.

^ your statement was obviously correct almost by definition. Professional pole vaulting is a collection of the top 0.00001% of pole vaulters in the world. If humans pole vaulted higher, then the bar for professional would be higher.

you specifically said "ALL OF THEM"

and you don't think college and professional sports motivate people to go play those sports and benefit themselves? you would be very naive if you don't see this.

not only that, but entertainment is most certainly a benefit to people, and sports provide a huge amount of entertainment to literally BILLIONS of humans.

exactly. and if they did not benefit people in some way, people wouldn't spend billions of dollars on sports each year. (and yes, entertainment is a benefit... otherwise we would work and then sit and stare at a wall for the rest of the day and be perfectly happy doing so.)

lol.

given a set amount of time, lets say 12 years of training, id say there are a helluva lot more people in the world that could play any sport at a professional level than there are folks who could be astronauts.

or brain surgeons.

If the world didn't have sports, nothing would change except there would be about 1000 more unemployable black dudes roaming the streets.

The percentage of black students would dramatically decrease as a majority of black college students are black college athletes.

see the thing is that i don't care if it entertains you or a billion other people. it's boring, not interesting, and not important to me.

and i really don't give a shit about the economics behind it either.

comparing rarity of talent to the current number of astronauts is completely & totally irrelevant.

And you would be wrong. Go count up the number of brain surgeons than compare that to the number of guys in the NFL.

It's a shit load harder. I'm not saying that they're better human beings or anything like that, but all you have to do is look at the attrition rate from the top level of college or minor league players to the majors. All of those guys who don't make the cut dedicated at least 12 years of their lives or more to training for their particular sport and still couldn't make it. Compared to NFL QB brain surgeon is a pretty common profession. I've met brain surgeons in my daily life. I've never met an NFL QB, active or retired, because that's one of the world's smallest groups.

haha, point being,

throwing an interception or fumbling or otherwise fucking up a stupid game doesnt hold a candle to screwing up someones brain.

or making a nasa rocket explode, or jeopardizing your crews life, or really a whole host of MORE IMPORTANT FUCKING JOBS.

i dont know what to tell you if youre just a knuckle-dragging fanboy that thinks the law of supply and demand is infallible. i feel sorry for you if youre so obsessed with sports that you completely lack morals.

hell, bring back gladitorial combat. make it pay per view and lets see some real juices flow, we're just animals after all.

I didn't say it was a more important skillset, just rarer and more difficult to achieve. Yes, the consequences of a brain tumor removal surgery matter considerably more than who wins the Superbowl.

When you claim that the amount of money they make playing pro sports is indefensible that's just incorrect.

By the way, market scarcity also explains why neurosurgeons make more than teachers.

If the distribution of obesity is normal across all socio-economic demographics than 26.5% or thereabouts. Probably closer to 40% or higher though.

yuck.

I feel bad every time I see mainstream TV and someone else's house these days. It's not a satisfying activity. It keeps you watching and that's all. Boredom is what makes you try something new and fulfilling.

I would gladly move to a place where TVs were outlawed. Heck, let's have an anti-curfew, 0.5-2 hours every day or week when you're allowed to be anywhere except for at home.
