example: high school sports... gives student-athletes a sense of community, motivates them to do better academically and behaviorally, and builds networking and social skills - things they will use for the rest of their lives. The cost is negligible.

A loose definition of "sorts" would cover almost all recreational activity that humans engage in. If the broad activities of sports and physical play didn't exist, then we would all be vegetables. It would be nonsense for anyone to object to these activities as a whole. When people complain about sports, they're generally complaining about professional sports.[Edited on April 20, 2012 at 12:03 PM. Reason : ooo]

sports for the purpose of exercise & fun or whatever is way different than professional sports. and professional (& college) sports are what i'm talking about.i know you people aren't this stupid. we can keep pretending that you are if you'd like to continue arguing over my opinion though.[Edited on April 20, 2012 at 12:03 PM. high school sports have an element of spectator sport in it. It's a gateway to college / professional, which are even more spectator-oriented.Even worse than the sort part of it is the band part of it. I feel sorry for everyone who committed the expensive and thankless hobby of marching band. That work would have been better spent on performances where people come to see you. And as for the big college games, they don't need bands, they don't need to exist in the first place.^ your statement was obviously correct almost by definition. Professional pole vaulting is a collection of the top 0.00001% of pole vaulters in the world. If humans pole vaulted higher, then the bar for professional would be higher.[Edited on April 20, 2012 at 12:10 PM. Reason : my brain hates me today]

you specifically said "ALL OF THEM"and you don't think college and professional sports motivate people to go play those sports and benefit themselves? you would be very naive if you don't see this. not only that, but entertainment is most certainly a benefit to people, and sports provide a huge amount of entertainment to literally BILLIONS of humans.
4/20/2012 12:08:35 PM
dogs belong on the floor, or outside. stay the fuck off the couch, and no way in hell will a dog ever sleep on my bed.

^I said that....until I got my dog
4/20/2012 12:09:51 PM
I grew up with a dog and loving dogs, but a recent experience taking care of dogs have made me want to never get one on my own. Unless I live in Alabama or something.
4/20/2012 12:11:02 PM
people who don't understand the economics of sports are extremely small minded
4/20/2012 12:11:45 PM
^i agree
4/20/2012 12:14:39 PM
exactly. and if they did not benefit people in some way, people wouldn't spend billions of dollars on sports each year. (and yes, entertainment is a benefit... otherwise we would work and then sit and stare at a wall for the rest of the day and be perfectly happy doing so.)
4/20/2012 12:14:56 PM
lol.given a set amount of time, lets say 12 years of training, id say there are a helluva lot more people in the world that could play any sport at a professional level than there are folks who could be astronauts.or brain surgeons.
4/20/2012 12:17:08 PM
I must have missed when CBS/FOX/NBC/ESPN etc. paid billions and billions of dollars for the rights to televise the National Brainsurgeon League
4/20/2012 12:20:20 PM
If the world didn't have sports, nothing would change except there would be about 1000 more unemployable black dudes roaming the streets. The percentage of black students would dramatically decrease as a majority of black college students are black college athletes.
4/20/2012 12:20:39 PM
4/20/2012 12:21:28 PM
see the thing is that i don't care if it entertains you or a billion other people. it's boring, not interesting, and not important to me. and i really don't give a shit about the economics behind it either. comparing rarity of talent to the current number of astronauts is completely & totally irrelevant.

haha, point being, throwing an interception or fumbling or otherwise fucking up a stupid game doesnt hold a candle to screwing up someones brain.or making a nasa rocket explode, or jeopardizing your crews life, or really a whole host of MORE IMPORTANT FUCKING JOBS.i dont know what to tell you if youre just a knuckle-dragging fanboy that thinks the law of supply and demand is infallible. i feel sorry for you if youre so obsessed with sports that you completely lack morals.hell, bring back gladitorial combat. make it pay per view and lets see some real juices flow, we're just animals after all.[Edited on April 20, 2012 at 12:42 PM. I didn't say it was a more important skillset, just rarer and more difficult to achieve. Yes, the consequences of a brain tumor removal surgery matter considerably more than who wins the Superbowl. When you claim that the amount of money they make playing pro sports is indefensible that's just incorrect.By the way, market scarcity also explains why neurosurgeons make more than teachers.
