Atlanta Ankiel's homer in the playoffs in SF was pretty neat

But mostly he just hit like .150

The fact that Ankiel was talented enough to switch positions and become a hitter for 5 years at the MLB level was pretty impressive. Cards still gave up on him pitching early IMO.

I don't see why he wouldn't be...there are reasonable arguments that he might be the best catcher of all time at this point

I think the steroids point will come up, but I don't think he had a strong enough link proven for it to hinder him in a significant way

Looks like Seattle got the best out of that deal. Maybe it will shut up all the fans saying trading Pineda was horrible.

I cant see where calling harper up now is anything but a decision by the owners to put asses in seats. His slash line during his short time in AAA wasnt very impressive. The difference in pitching from AAA to the majors is pretty significant, but it was a small sample size, so maybe he'll be alright?

^^, ^ so the answer is to rush a prospect who hasn't proven he can hit a breaking ball yet? it's a pretty risky move and could screw up his plate approach. but hey, maybe it'll work out. i hope it does.

i think it was the first day since 2008 or 2009 that two different players had at least 7 RsBI in a game

but RsBI is a useless contextual stat

Ruiz's WPA of 0.478 was 0.516 higher than Pujols' -0.038

Pujols the active WPA leader! A negative WPA! Can you imagine!

sorry for accidentally adding a lower case "s" to an acronym, thus making it plural when it already was plural. also sorry for giving the impression that i'm the worst kind of stats activist. i try not to be but fail miserably at times

and fwiw, i don't really pay attention to things like WPA, but sometimes they're fun to look at in small doses. there really are entirely too many people like rain man in the sabermetrics community, and a lot of them need to be ignored.

ok ok fine. in isolated instances like this it's kind of neat i guess, but using it as some kind of performance indicator isn't because so much of it depends on the abilities of the hitters in front of you to get on base, providing you with the opportunity for an RBI.

Seven in one game is a big deal no matter who does it. And RBI still matter, just less so than most advanced metrics. Is it harder to hit a homerun with men on base then it is to with no one on? Probably not, especially since the pitcher's attention is divided. But its pretty much a self-fulfilling prophecy that the best hitters will have the most rbi, simply because of opportunity, outliers like Mike Lowell's 120 steak season hitting sixth nonwithstanding.

Speaking of the Aaron Harang, who played for the Reds, who were playing the Cubs today, who started Ryan Dempster... did anyone see Zambrano smiling like a serial rapist while doing the Dempster glove wiggle last night? Dude scares me.

I recently just realized Dusty Baker was still managing the Reds. I could've sworn he'd been fired years ago.
