where should i go to get the nylon webbing and buckles...a craft store like Micheal's?
1/12/2012 1:24:59 PM
REI, Great Outdoor Provision Co., or the internet. The Michael's in my area doesn't carry nylon webbing. They have a limited number of buckles and sliders though.REI also has snaps with setting tools. You may want to use those on the belt loop so you don't have to undo your belt to put the knife on.

My ESEE-3MIL arrived yesterday

Sooo... I decided to do some research on municipal codes. I came across this pretty cool website:http://www.municode.com/LibraryLooking up Raleigh, NC, I have found out the following info:http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=10312Sec. 12-1060. - PROHIBITION OF FIREARMS AND DANGEROUS WEAPONS.
1/27/2012 12:52:33 AM
That seems silly. You need at least a 4" blade to fight off someone with a grenade.
1/27/2012 1:31:38 AM
Yeah... North Carolina has no regulation on blade length. But a lot of local city/town ordinances are limiting it to either 3" or 3.5". It makes no logical sense that someone can be licensed to carry a concealed firearm legally, but they are limited to a 3" pocket knife.
1/27/2012 1:50:18 AM
My edc is 3.75. Hope I don't get taken to jail.
1/27/2012 2:55:42 AM
My Recon 1 is 4"... Maybe this is an excuse to buy another high quality knife, but in 3" format. Perhaps a Cold Steel Voyager?
1/27/2012 3:22:55 AM
got myself a Spyderco Sage 2. Great knife.
1/28/2012 10:12:36 PM
That sage is neat. It's like a native with a full flat grind. I love my native...I might need a sage.
1/29/2012 7:56:08 PM
I bought a Native at ^ suggestion from Walmart three/four years ago. It's been an amazing knife. When I first got the Sage, I was skeptical that it was really worth 4x the Native. After using it for a few days, I don't want to even pick up the Native. The full flat grind + integral frame lock + spyderhole = perfection.I do wish it had a black clip though. It's really too shiny.
1/30/2012 9:48:53 PM
Did I suggest the native? I wish Walmart still carried them. You should sell your native to me since you're not going to use it

I finally set up the sander my wife got me a while back. I used it to do some heavy metal removal from a few neglected tools or thinning out some blades. Here's my Fiskars axe that now has a convex secondary bevel and a 40° micro bevel:It's sharp.I also recieved my Scrapyard Knives 711. I had to reprofile the edge. I think it's gonna be a great larger knife. I'll post pics sometime.
2/7/2012 11:02:17 PM
Just saw that knife limitation stuff posted last month. Looks like my knife that I usually carry is around 4"...damn If you measure it from a certain point, its about 3.5", which looks to be the limit for Charlotte. How are you supposed to measure blade length? The NC General Statute GS_14-269 states:
2/8/2012 9:18:07 AM
Spring assisted is legal, as it requires a primary opening motion. A spring operated functions by button. This can be front exiting, or side opening.

i just picked up a glock field knife on Midway for $27. I figured for that price, I'd take the chance on the quality, and just return it if I wasn't happy...It's actually pretty stout. The handle and sheath feel like the same stuff they make their handgun receivers out of, and that hook on the top side of the cross guard is a bottle opener.I've only played with it at my desk, so I can't comment on the edge, or how it is supposedly "perfectly balanced for throwing." Perhaps this weekend. So far, I'm pleased with it, especially for the price.
2/29/2012 4:38:25 PM
I have two Glock knifes on the way.A black one with the plain edge, and a Tan one with the Saw edged back.
2/29/2012 4:53:51 PM
got some knives for sale in classifieds.

I want that talonite but I'm poor =(
3/1/2012 11:37:05 AM
My two EDCs' love both of them. The Cold Steel Recon posted previously is a pretty solid knife. I have been thinking about picking one up. A co-worker has one and I was checking it out. I can honestly say it will fillet you open.[Edited on March 2, 2012 at 10:34 PM. Reason : ]

..that you need to carry a gun, a knife, AND a flashlight with you
3/5/2012 6:21:26 PM
I carry all three with me every day.My Glock, kershaw leek or scallion, and varying flashlights.
3/5/2012 7:01:11 PM
For an inexpensive EDC knife in your price range (actually below), I recommend the Kershaw 3650ST:Other than that though, I carry a SOG Rescue & Trident...Trident:Rescue:...the blade's really goofy, but I love the serrated blade. I usually carry this one when I'm snowboarding...

I have encountered a lot more situations where carrying a knife or a gun would have worked to my disadvantage than those where it would have helped me.
3/6/2012 4:58:14 PM
I'm in the woods/in the middle of nowhere a lot, but really I'd carry almost all the same junk anyway. I probably wouldn't carry a fire starter or water purification tabs if I never went in the woods. It's really no big deal. We all prepare for the unknown, some are just more prepared than others.

By escalating a situation that would have resolved itself otherwise. Assuming you carry the knife for self defense (you are not sharpening pencils with it obviously), what the hell kind of situation would you ever use it in? Knives only work well when you have the element of surprise, i.e for attacking and not defending yourself.Gun is a little bit more practical for self defense purposes, as sometimes just brandishing it can make your problem go away. But are you really ready to fire it out in public? How many situations have you encountered that warrants you to do so? Most of the time having a gun actually escalates the problem. Also guns are more prone to injure people due to accidental discharge. And also you have to worry about taking it with you/leaving it in the car when you go to places where guns are not allowed.Again, I can see where weapons can be useful at home in case of a break in, and they should be safer at home where it can be stored properly and where the element of surprise is on your side. Or if you live in a shitty neighborhood/encounter wild animals fairly consistently. But people that live around campus will almost certainly never need to use a gun or a knife for self-defense unless they are involved with doing something illegal.

Not mad, just curious why people go through the inconvenience of having the entire toolbox in their pockets at all times. Pocket knives are useful tools, but Fumbler's picture shows a Victorinox AND a Native. One of them is a better tool, one of them is a better weapon. Flashlights are almost necessary for certain lines of work, but for most people's day to day activities the cellphone light is more than adequate, no need to carry a Surefire everywhere you go. Nothing wrong with a concealed handgun except for the inconvenience of not taking it to places where it is specifically prohibited (which is a lot of places). Just honestly curious how often do you guys get to use all this stuff you lug around or if it makes you feel that much safer. I know not everyone here is in NCSU area, that's why I asked where you guys live that you would need all that.
3/7/2012 11:20:04 AM
I hope I never have to use my handgun except at the range. I use my pocket knife daily.
3/7/2012 12:38:33 PM
The victorinox and native are two very different tools, both of which suck as weapons and aren't carried as weapons. I'll use either almost every day, mostly for trimming nails but also for opening packages, shaving a core sample from a tree, cutting food, etc. The flashlight probably gets the most use. It's easy to check for locked doors at work when the lights are out, I can spotlight my dogs when they're at the back of the yard, and how many times are you looking for something behind/under a desk or dark toolbox? The gun really isn't inconvenient. I just slip it in my waistband when I put my keys in my pocket. I just leave it in my car when I'm somewhere that doesn't allow carry. It's no big deal. You seem to think its as inconvenient as lugging around a shotgun. To me it's just part of my wardrobe. Like I've said, you do a lot of shit that you don't need to. I lock the doors to my house even though I KNOW nobody would turn the knob when they hear our dogs barking and snarling. Locking the deadbolt on my house is more cumbersome than putting my gun in my waistband. I hope to never need my gun but again, just because nothing bad has ever happenned and the likelihood is low, you can't see the future and shit still happens. I happen to feel perfectly safe handling and carrying a gun, so why not carry it?I keep a tire repair kit and small air compressor in my truck even though I have a perfectly good spare tire. Do you think that's silly too? You've got to get some stuff straight. Your weapon shouldn't escalate a situation; if it does then you are in the wrong and you are no longer innocent. This is the mentality they teach you when you take the concealed handgun class. If I pull out a gun (or even a knife) then I've already made the decision to hurt someone. A lot. If its not bad enough that I need to hurt someone then no weapon has any business being out.

^thanks fumbler, well said. As well I see what Igor is asking/pointing out... I just dont agree with it.I too keep my doors locked when at home, because, there are many cases where home invasions arent forcible.
