If it does happen I'm sure you can filter the pinterest updates in your news feed at least.

So I told my wife about this thread- she is an avid Pintrest fan. First time she's taken an interest in tww.

We did this as part of an appetizer at Christmas

Quote :
"Confession: Before I found Pinterest, I lived a normal, happy and fulfilling life. I never once considered in how many ways a candle could fit into a mason jar. I never thought to make cupcakes with handmade paper flowers on them, plan an imaginary wedding or put together virtual ensembles of virtual clothes I did not own and name them things like "Pink Chic" or "Girl's Night Sparkle."

All of that is changed now. Those who aren't on Pinterest have heard of Pinterest, and those that haven't heard of Pinterest are hiding out under very un-chic rocks and probably don't even own mason jars.

"I'm confused," the uninitiated say. "Isn't it just like, a bunch of pictures you look at?" Yes, yes it is. And that is the problem. It is a dangerously simple concept, and the result is beautiful: Picture the most well-curated bulletin board you can think of, without crinkled paper or thumbtacks.

At first, the curiosity is excusable. You can browse the pins, anonymously of course. "Pins" in this case are the pictures; Pinterest is all about the visual, and information about say, how to construct a wine rack out of vintage plates is often fronted by a beautiful image of said vintage plate wine rack. There are also the permeating memes, geekery and cute animal pictures that have populated the Internet since its inception, and, of course, inside jokes about how addicting Pinterest is.

For a while this was okay for me, but then I started seeing way too much cool, life-improving stuff and was tired of circumventing the Pinterest protocol, so I broke down and requested an invite.

Part of the nearly-unblemished fun of Pinterest is the lack of spammers, bots, predatory companies and other internet fun-ruiners, and this environment is maintained by making the site invite-only. Lucky for you if you have Pinterest-literate friends who can throw you a line, but if you don't you can request an invite from the site's powers-that-be. Once you get an invite, you also have to have a Facebook or Twitter account to seal the deal.

"Thanks for joining the Pinterest waiting list!" came the email. Really? "You have to request an invite AND get on a waiting list for Pinterest? That's BS." I tweeted (expressing anger non-digitally is so passe). Then, magically, within moments, a chirpy reply: "Happy to help you there. Here's an invite! enjoy "

As it turns out, good things CAN happen if you whine on Twitter, and judging from the thousands of similar replies by the Supportwing account, that's all you have to do to get an invite. Voila! Let the pinning begin.

And remember, please pin responsibly.

"

Meanwhile, Peace College, or should I say William Peace University, had a "Pinterest night" last Monday

I registered on this.

I have no idea what I would ever do with it.

The arguments for it are entirely unsubstantiated. How does it even make you feel creative? Do you share lolcats on it? I don't see any lolcats.

I see pictures of houses. Why would I want to look at this? I don't think I've seen anything on this thing that I want to look at.

I have the pin it bookmarklet, but anything I would ever think of pinning is such the style opposite of the site.

This is pointless. I don't understand what's going on.

what do you mean such the opposite of the site? I have no interest in shabby chic or rococo interior design elements but plenty of other people on the site do and it doesn't affect me in either way. You can theoretically pin anything that you want and only follow specific boards relating to what you want to see (you don't have to follow all of one person's boards either). What you see is what you want to see. Only interested in mid-century architecture? Then only follow boards that post related pictures/information.

The majority of the time I am just using it for myself anyway as a personal idea cork board for design stuff as I run across things I like on different blogs and vendor sites I read - pulls them into one place instead of having to just clutter my bookmarks or remember which site I saw what on. I do also browse other people's stuff some, in specific categories I am interested in. For example, I was looking recently when trying to get some additional inspiration for a butler's pantry/built in bookshelf and extra kitchen counter-space plan I have.

I definitely don't think that everyone would find it useful and plenty of people use it more like twitter or tumblr than the way I use it.

as a male, the only thing that interests me on this website is the recipes. the decor, dumb quotes, and babies dressed as animals i could do without.

it's especially annoying because EVERYTHING like that has a chain of the same comments over and over. "OMG LOVE." "loovvvvveeee it" "adorable!" "omg so cute", etc. bots are also starting to take over.

that being said, i can see why girls like it so much.

see decor, architecture, and design are the aspects I like and the recipes I could do without. (I'm glad my wife likes cooking though, because I just love food but have 0 interest in cooking )

Once again though, just don't follow boards/topics where people are posting dumb quotes and babies dressed as animals if that's not what you like.

Probably because when you registered, it sent an email to all of your facebook friends that you are following them. And 10 of them chose to follow you back.

It really doesn't stick out a ton, but I'm sure it will happen at least once

I also look at it as a buffer I seem to walk away from the sink with a wet streak across my mid section 7 times out of 10. (twss)

that new towel bar reminded me that we should go ahead and replace the hardware in our kitchen at some point. It's been on our to-do list for awhile but I keep a strict budget for house-stuff and we pushed it back a couple months ago when we decided to re-furnish our living room. The hardware we have is satin nickel so it could be much, much worse but the shape and such just doesn't go with our style very well.

I like it a lot, but I had the same though (minus the impaled vag part). I'd imagine you could find one that has a much lower profile.

Why does there need to be a separate pinterest for men? If you (generic here, not you^) don't want to see anything you consider "girly" then just don't follow anyone posting that stuff.

If you need separate pinterest-like sites for "fashion" or "places" or "shopping" or any specific category you're doing it wrong and I question your use of teh interwebz.

^^ Yea, the home page: The generic page you only ever see before you sign up for the site. If you actually have an account, you only see your personalized home page when you log in unless you specifically click to go to the generic home page. This page only shows the feeds of pinners (or specific boards by other pinners if you don't want to follow all of someone's pins) you voluntarily follow. If your feed is "girly", it would ONLY be because you specifically followed "girly" feeds.

To me, it looks like people talking about pinterest who haven't actually used Pinterest, to me.

^^^^

u mad bro?

There's nothing wrong with a website geared for women.

It's kind of fascinating that without even marketing it that way, it evolved that way. It'd be an interesting phenomenon to study.

It could be pure chance that's how things shook out.
