a group of people hung out at the gym yesterday during my workout. They all had on workout clothes, and they stayed at the same station for 30 minutes, with one girl sitting on a nearby machine the whole time, not even trying to use it. jesus!

in the lawls category, there's a guy that's started coming to the gym recently who literally only does flys. Every time I walk by, he is on that machine. I don't think he knows any other exercise than the fly. and his hair is usually hilarious, too.

I hope it's not me. My elbow is fucked and I've only been doing chest stuff where I don't have to bend my arm.

My hair is fucking sweet though.

nah. this dude has his head shaved except for the "top" (so, like the 2 or three inches on the top of his skull where one might balance a book or something), which he allows to grow to about 2 or 3 inches. sometimes he "mohawks" it, sometimes he swirls it around, sometimes he combs it over. but it always looks ridiculous.

I use the rack to do deadlifts. I have a history of hurting my back if I start my dead lifts from the floor so I set the rack pins as low as possible and start my sets in the up position.

Isn't that a rack pull and not a deadlift? In which case it would be acceptable.

no I do a rack pull and then step back and do real deads. Then I re-rack. I hate pulling it straight off the floor.

it's not a real dead unless it goes to the floor and completely stops, no bouncing, every rep.

hence.... deadlift.

breaking it off the floor is the hardest part.

sorry but you can't bounce 400+ lbs

But you can get a nasty pulled lower back when over 6 ft and trying to pull from the floor. I know its not technically correct but I refuse to get another pulled lower back. Last time I pulled it I couldn't walk without wanted to tear up like a girl

Yeah, it sounds like you need to lower your weight and work on your form instead. Maybe you need to build your lower back muscles up a bit more. (I'm 6'7" and love deadlifts.)

Yeah it seems like being shorter/having shorter limbs would make it easier to do just about any lift.

I think it actually depends on the relative lengths of your torso/limbs.

Someone with longer femurs and torso will be able to get there hips further back to create better angles/efficiency.

There's a trade off, the longer the limbs, the more mechanical advantage you will have, but it also increases total distance/time the movement takes.

I think I read somewhere that the ideal athlete is in the 6'-6'2'' range for most strength sports. I could be mis-remembering.

I work between two machines at the same time as to get my workout done faster (I do a 16 machine workout)

I hate when I go from one, then someone who can obviously see what I'm doing jumps in and slows me down (others see what I'm doing and get their sets in during my set on the other machine, and I don't have a problem with that, some are even doing the same thing)

Then when people are on a machine I need, don't want to let you work in, then sit there for 3 minutes between sets doing nothing

also people who are not personal trainers trying to correct my form, you arent being cool in front of your friends, you are probably also the guy at the office with all the suggestions too

also, all the younger girls come up in there with shorts that don't even cover their asscheeks, and wear shirts not much bigger than a sports bra, and then look at you weird when you sneak a peak, if you dont like it, dont wear it

also, old people, i can understand being nude while changing in the locker room, but just sitting there chatting it up with each other, hell no, stop it

do women just stand around the locker room nude? i just want to know

I've also wondered why the old guys walk around with a towel in their hand instead of using it to cover their balls.

Really not sure how I feel about this thread. There are so many people out there who don't go. The ones that do shouldn't discourage the rest. Then again, I'm not sure I'd care either :p

I about blew a fuse today when a group of 5 or 6 guys doing some kind of crossfit esque circuit were jumping from station to station today...

I was doing pull ups between sets and 4 of the guys took up all 4 pull-up spots to do a shitty-form of hanging-legs-to-bar movements. I had to stand there, wait and watch as all 4 of them did their movements in-sync for about 45sec.

I don't know what it is about being in the gym that shortens my fuse. Any other situation I am cool, calm and collected, but when I am in the weight room I am impatient.

No, it's having to wait while 4 people of the same group, take up an area that can ultimately by used by 9 people doing different lifts, while that group does a retarded movement with poor form in-sync.

If there is an entire empty row of ellipticals, do not select the one right next to mine.

Also, if you're going to work out, put your all into it, don't just LOOK at the stupid shit.

Also, middle to not so middle aged women who blow dry their hair out and put on make up for the gym kill me.

So do the weird ones. A big BIG girl on the treadmill doing skips and flailing her arms to the music right in front of me is distracting (but meh, at least she's there) so is the guy revving the treadmill to top speed only to use the side rails while you STOMP on the machine because you can't keep up. You're shaking the entire building!

If you're anything like the people I see at the gym 185 is not a deadlift.

I go as heavy as possible. It doesn't bother me to take the first set or two from the floor buy I feel that I waste energy, lose reps, and risk injury.

I'll stick to my heavy weights. I lift for size. I think the people ITT are the guys lifting light weights for 20 rep sets like thats making a difference

that's what I'm experimenting with now. I used to try and get size with high weight/low rep and got decent results. Strength increased of course, and size went up a little bit. I'm experimenting with mid weight and high reps (10 generally, 15 max) and working on increasing the weight I can do at high reps.

now its turning into Body Building Thread v2.0

There is one guy at the gym that always takes the elevator from the locker room (bottom floor) to the machines (two floors up), and then takes it back down after he's spent about 30 minutes roaming the floor. I think he's missing the point...

I do a lot of 20 rep sets for legs, and I'm sure one of my legs is bigger than both of yours combined.

Last I heard, the technique makes it a deadlift, not the weight. Different exercises benefit from different reps; 20 rep sets are great for Dimel deadlifts.

hey guy

if there's two squat racks and one power rack, with no extra barbells around, perhaps 630 in the afternoon is not the best time to be doing farmers walks using two of the barbells for half an hour.

gallon jugs are typically for people cutting weight, they go through several a day, if you saturate your body with water youll piss it al out plus a pound or more of extra water that your body had been holding

probably fighters, wrestlers, or body builders

What's wrong with gallon jugs? I used to carry one to the gym because I drink a lot of water and it's annoying to wait for a water fountain to piss my [smaller container] all the way full. Just more efficient when you're doing circuits or not trying to take unwanted breaks to refill. Never understood all the hate, or why pansy gyms go out of their way to ban them
