The last director of graduate studies for my program asked to see my medical records (yup, that much of an idiot). Good on you for telling that bitch no. I have had to deal with slumlords like that before, they get scared when intimidating you doesn't work anymore because they really have pretty much no legal power due to the shitty condition of their property.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse... (for them)I got an email yesterday saying the contractors will be back on Tuesday morning to look at the furnace again... but on Thursday they told me everything was taken care of and they were "out of my hair now." I said I would be there then asked what else needed to be fixed because I was told everything was basically fine and all set. T.C. said everything is fine but the contractors needed to do a "final walkthrough" with the furnace... even though they did one the other day. Something isn't adding up.But I have a feeling I know what's going on.Today when we walked into my apartment to move more stuff, it reeked of gas. To the point of me having to open windows. The smell was around for a good 20 minutes or so, even with the door wide open.I'm guessing the hired out contractor told them they smelled gas while everything in my furnace closet was shut off (aka coming from somewhere else). I will also be paying the mechanical inspector a visit on Tuesday to let him know about the gas smell because it's obviously coming from somewhere else, which could mean someone else is in trouble now.

Man, I love this thread.

The only thing missing is the evening news.

Str8BacardiL has given some absolutely awful advice in this threadSamwise16, I hope you stick it to your landlord

Oh trust and believe I am I plan on having the mechanical inspector's number ready to go while they're doing the "final walkthrough." Then I'll be calling the fire marshal and housing official back. They basically hate me now.

I was told by the building inspectors that they better have everything fixed by Thursday. They're fixing more stuff today. and they talked to my neighbor below me because I told them my apartment reeked of gas on Saturday and it seems to be coming up through the building.Guess who left a message for the mechanical inspector and I'm about to call the fire marshal again, toooooooMy ultimate goal in this is to have every furnace in this building inspected... and hopefully ripped out.

So they had the "final" inspection on Friday, and they have to install yet another piece to the furnace TC has also been exceptionally nice to me lately. And I don't mean nice in a sarcastic way... I told her I wouldn't be able to go to the inspection on Friday or this upcoming Monday due to being out of town and her response was, "Have fun in NC!! Be safe"Uhhh... k? But I do have a serious question. I still plan on asking my lawyer tomorrow, but.. if they cashed the check I gave them for the final 14 days, does that mean they technically accept it? Or could they just say it is going to be applied to my balance? (If they decided to be a-holes and not just accept my 14 day notice)
7/10/2011 4:22:49 PM
Any news?
7/11/2011 6:59:04 PM
I plan on calling tomorrow to get an update from the inspectors. Otherwise, nothing besides what I heard on Friday. I'd imagine it will slow down for noe until they come after me (if they do) or when I go after them. Which I completely plan on doing.

We got the bill for the hospital visit I had with all the blood tests....OVER $3,000 I thought about just going through the real estate attorney for the medical stuff, but no. Bump that. One of the top environmental attorneys in Alabama said he would definitely take my case so these people can get ready
7/20/2011 9:03:34 AM
^ not that it matters in the long run, but do you have health insurance or was all the medical stuff out of pocket?
7/20/2011 9:37:48 AM
health insurance (thank goodness for BCBS Federal), but we still owe a portion :\as for earlier this year, I paid a ton of money to have my meds increased for the fatigue... as for medical bills in general, the sleep study in February made me meet my deductible way early [Edited on July 20, 2011 at 9:45 AM. Reason : the first month I paid $150 for the Provigil and it didn't help at all..]
7/20/2011 9:44:56 AM
They are idiots if they come after you.

Troll is warming up the troll engine??? One way or another, the apartment complex caused $3k of medical expenses.[Edited on July 20, 2011 at 11:40 AM. Reason : asdf]
7/20/2011 11:40:00 AM
Oh come on. I'm far from a troll. An initial read of her post made me think she was getting hit with $3,000 of bills she was responsible for, which I assume isn't the case.
7/20/2011 12:28:58 PM
Oh, yeah we're not responsible for $3K (BCBS covered the majority of it)I just got all because as we can all recognize, I wouldn't have that on my insurance had it not been for them. TC called me today and asked if I could call her back... >_> idk what's going on. I will report tomorrow morning after I speak with her (and the attorney )
7/20/2011 9:39:08 PM
OH. EM. GEE. So, long story short... I had my meeting with the property manager and the attorney today (who was actually a very nice lady). At first I thought they were going to give me a bill because they started going down a list of what I technically owe them, if they followed the 60 day notice.Well, I explained how I didn't understand how that 60 day notice counts when I was told they needed my signature, blah blah blah (all of that is ITT).. and ended with my argument that even if I had turned in the 60 day notice, this would have still happened and I would have still wanted to leave early. That's when they informed me they wanted to end everything today. They will not be sending anything to collections, I will get my full security deposit back, and they even had a contract ready for me to sign noting they acknowledge my ending the lease early and that there will be NO penalties. They also made sure to put on there that they have received all keys and whatnot. The cherry on top? Nothing on there mentions further legal action. So I am still planning on going through an attorney (and their insurance) for reimbursement of the relevant medical visits.IT'S LIKE

Have your lawyer look it over before you sign to be safe, but sounds like a good start.
8/3/2011 1:14:28 PM
It was literally half a page (double spaced), including the section for signatures. I didn't need the lawyer to look it over... I was actually thinking to myself while signing it, "Are these people for real? Did they let the high school secretary write this?"Today is a good day

aha I bet they shit a brick when the court papers show up at their door
8/3/2011 4:03:00 PM
Excellent. I bet some dropout did write that. Definitely met some mean old ladies that were bitter because managing shitty apartments was all they'd ever do with their life and it makes me not feel bad about doing what I can legally to screw their employeer.
8/3/2011 4:41:27 PM
^2 If the lawyer I spoke with today takes my case (he has to talk to his partners first, but told me it's an excellent one), they're going to shit more than a brick. I would expect maybe... a shetland pony - or a komodo dragon
