Yo this is bullshit, Peeta is supposed to be huge.Dude scored an 8 just by picking things up and putting them down.I pictured him looking like this

I kept hearing about this thing and waffling on the subject."Fights to the death for popular amusement? I could get into that...""From the perspective of a teenage girl? Fuck all that noise.""But she does straight up kill people, and there's a dictatorship...""Yeah, and there's a love triangle. I say again, fuck all that noise.""But they reference cannibalism a few times and the protagonist seems pretty bloodthirsty!""Fine, I'll read the goddamn things."I ended up reading and enjoying them. The books managed (I thought) to downplay the feminine/relationship/teenage/emotional/whatever horseshit, and I pray to the god of book-to-film adaptations that the movies will do the same. But that god is a fickle god, and I'm afraid it is as likely to deliver six hours of some chick menstruating about her boyfriends as it is a trilogy of bloodsport, revolution, and post-apocalyptic insanity.

^^i agree with this. i don't think he's supposed to look like a body builder at all.

I pictured him more muscled than the actor they picked, but not some kind of behemoth or anything.

I never really pictured the districts being that huge...it sounded like each district had one big city with small towns bordering it. When the reaping took place weren't all the eligible children present from the ENTIRE district? That would be one hell of a commute.I guess the population of each district is just condensed to one small area and the rest is no-man's land? And I'm guessing that map is only based on the information provided in book 1 because Districts 5 & 6 have specific resources they provide as well.[Edited on January 21, 2012 at 2:13 AM.
bdmazur is correct. He told Katniss that's why he got such a high score. He was still trying to hide his talent at the time.

as i was reading i figured the districts were mostly unoccupied vast areas of territory with a centralized town/city center as the "capitol" of that district, if you will. but then you would have smaller villages spread out that would be involved in that particular district's craft: fishing, mining, farming, etc.
1/21/2012 12:37:19 PM
Why don't any of the districts reach the coasts? That would mean all of their fishing came from inland lakes and not the ocean. That's not really how I envisioned Panem to look at all
1/21/2012 1:12:57 PM
They do reach the coast... it's just not the coast you're used to. Apparently, the outer edges of North America are underwater by the time Panem is created. So, all the blue areas outside the district are water. But there are a lot of these created maps. Many of them have the districts much smaller, or slightly shuffled around. I just thought that one looked nicest.[Edited on January 21, 2012 at 1:47 PM. Reason : ]

Thinking back on it, I don't think any of the districts are large geographical areas. Katniss crawls under the D12 wall to go hunting, so she's outside of the district, but not inside of another. So the districts don't actually have borders with each other. It's really just cities. Based on each district's climate, people, and industries, it's probably something like this:Capitol - Denver1 - Las Vegas2 - Santa Fe3 - San Diego4 - Houston5 - Kansas City6 - Detroit7 - Vancouver (or anything southwest Canada)8 - St Louis9 - Chicago10 - Dallas11 - Atlanta12 - Ashville (or any NC or WV mountain town)
1/22/2012 1:28:48 PM
i'd put most of district 12 north of nc, closer to wv, like you mentioned.
1/22/2012 4:23:16 PM
How the hell can the western mountains and all of Hawaii be underwater?
1/22/2012 5:01:45 PM
maybe the west coast finally fell off into the ocean

global warming. this book is clearly hipster propaganda./sarcasm

Interesting . . . http://capitolcouture.pn/

This "magazine" or whatever it is supposed to be totally blows. If Effie Trinket was such a big deal, she wouldn't have been assigned to 12. The front page mentions a volunteer from D12 but none of the other districts at all? This is just awful compared to what I expect a real Capitol publication would look like.I figured they'd be releasing a lot of online content for this movie...I was hoping for some videos of the victory tour for "last year's champion" (73rd games winner) since that always precedes the next reaping.[Edited on January 24, 2012 at 11:22 AM. ^^wow. Talk about a website that was very much so not designed to be viewed on an iPhone.
1/24/2012 11:16:27 AM
I would've swapped District 8 with District 11 as states like Illinois, Iowa and Missouri have more of a "breadbasket" feel to them while the Southern states highlighted have a textile tradition (that is, until we outsourced it all to China).
1/24/2012 11:18:18 AM
District 11 is "very warm" in the other books. So, I definitely think a southern placement is appropriate for that.
1/24/2012 11:56:29 AM
D11 also has a much larger black (African-Panemian?) population. The only black kids in the movie are from D11.
1/24/2012 12:06:58 PM
So this map is just fan speculation right?
1/24/2012 2:19:18 PM
Yes
1/24/2012 2:19:48 PM
Would have been nice if she had actually included some maps. Those were really helpful in Tolkien's books.
1/24/2012 2:27:26 PM
Yeah I like the maps in A Song of Ice and Fire also but it didn't stop fan speculation, since they only included one continent and small parts of another. This was one of my favorites, a stylized world maphttp://gamesofthrones.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/World_Map.jpg
1/24/2012 2:47:56 PM
I really don't understand why having a map would increase anyone's enjoyment of the books. While I was reading them I basically ended up pretending that it was a fictional world. Once they said that all of the citizens for 1/13th of the entire landmass gathered in one place at a time, all realism or relatability for modern maps went out the window for me.
1/24/2012 9:09:18 PM
The districts don't abut one another. District 12 is probably some shithole town in West Virginia. There could be hundreds of miles separating them. That being said, I've read the whole series and was kinda bummed by how shitty it was. But then again, I hate everything.

I finished book 3 last night. My final assessment::Hunger Games: awesome plot with minimal character developmentCatching Fire: decent plot, way too predictable, too much recounting of prior eventsMockingjay, first half: some cool war strategy scenes, but a very forced love triangleMockingjay, second half: a lot of gore that seemed unnecessary, as if the author closed her eyes, flipped open to a random page, and said "someone should die here," and then did it again a few times (it tried a bit too much to be like Harry Potter 7).
1/25/2012 11:07:34 AM
So, are we discussing the 2nd and 3rd books in this? Or just the movies? I want to know before I post potential spoilers. Also, Katniss's first interview with Caeser, I expected a more flashy dress. This one is pretty, but not how I imagined Cinna's designs:[Edited on January 30, 2012 at 1:48 PM. Reason : ]
