poor hogan has got to be next, doing serious steroids for like 25 yrs straight just gives me a bad feeling about him
5/22/2011 3:43:23 PM
I wouldn't call 58 "young." It's the guys in their 20s/30s/early 40s who died from medical problems or addictions brought on directly by the business that are super tragic.Yokozuna (Rodney Anoa'i) died at 34, and his cousin Umaga (Eddie Fatu) died at 36.Don't even get me started on the Von Erichs.David died at 28.Kerry died at 33.Mike died at 23.Chris died at 21. ]

I still can't believe that Jake the Snake is still alive. If there are still any fans that have not seen "Beyond the Mat" I would recommend checking it out. It explains Jake's messed up childhood which had a hand in his current drug problems. It does notexcuse how he has treated his family but it does shed some light on his background. I know I am gonna get flamed for this but I grew up in the early 80s in upstate SC. As a youngster my dad would get us front row ticketsfor NWA shows at the old Greenville Memorial Auditorium. Becausethe NWA was still relatively local back then the wrestles were more opento meet and greets before the events. I got the chance to shake hands with and meet theRock & Roll Express, Ronnie & Jimmie Garvin, Magnum T.A., Nikita Koloff,Tully Blanchard, Ric Flair among others. I still have Great American Bash 84/85 on VHS Cassette Tapes. I need to get thoseconverted to DVD sometime soon.

The NWA was never local. It was formed as a way for wrestling territories to share talent, and was international (all of the US, Canada, Mexico, and Japan) when it was created in the '40s.

My grandad was a fixture at the NWA Mid-Atlantic tapings at WRAL back in the 70s and 80s. Ric Flair was also a fixture around the Mission Valley area in the 70s. My dad would see him at whatever pool hall came before Champions down there. Considering I lived in Raleigh, NC and Memphis (lived 3 blocks from the Mid South Coliseum, met Lawler once at the Delta State Fair, but it was in his later "Burger King" years, not when he was still a beast), it's too bad I totally turned off wrestling about 10 years ago. I just can't sit through the McMahon family angles for whatever redeeming qualities are left. Maybe someone can prove to me it's changed.
