OK so I'm re-reading Storm of Swords right now, and I'm interested in Meera's story about the crannogman at the Harrenhall tourney. Jojen kept asking Bran if his father had told the story, like something important happened. Was the crannogman Howland Reed? Any insight as to what the story is actually about??? Is that some evidence to support the Jon's parents theory? (Meera seems to know that Rhaegar crowned Lyanna queen of love and beauty, but said that's "a sadder story.")
7/7/2011 10:50:39 PM
I'm very excited about the crannogman in book 5!
7/8/2011 3:56:44 AM
^^that crannog dude was the only other person to survive with ned in the encounter when his sister died. its kinda proof that jon is lyanna's son, and a son of targeryan. i can't spell proper names, fyi, but you know what im saying.

Just finished. What the fuck. x infinity.
7/14/2011 1:01:39 PM
^Holy fuck you read that monster quick. About 1/4 of the way through and enjoying it so far. It is a little annoying at the beginning where you know about major events that haven't happened yet. However, this is starting to dissipate as I get deeper into this book. I will not come back into this thread until I'm finished due to shitheads and their need to post spoilers. I hope to be done with this by early next week.
7/14/2011 6:21:55 PM
I wont post any spoilers till others have finished, but man. I only waited three months between reading 1-4 and 5. I can't imagine how those who have waited years can feel. Some stories were good, others were pretty disappointing... and one, well... you will find out.
7/14/2011 9:54:56 PM
Finished this last night. Definitely better then 4, though some parts were pretty dull. Not sure what to think yet
7/15/2011 10:53:55 AM
Wife got book. Will probably read whenever she's done. Not waiting eagerly or anything.
7/15/2011 1:11:59 PM
Finished today. You could definitely tell that Martin wasn't sure where to take some threads and decided to tie them off rather abruptly. It was also strange reading it knowing that "some" or "most" of the book had been written several years prior to the remainder. Overall, was enjoyable. Seems like he's setting up book six to be another SoS. Now we can discuss conspiracy theories for the next 6 years.
7/18/2011 7:48:10 PM
7/19/2011 8:01:49 AM
^Ha yeah I was trying to be positive. Hopefully the success of the HBO show (not to mention ADWD) will put more pressure on the mountain that doesn't write. There are some ridiculous conspiracy theories flying around out there - some are as entertaining as the books themselves.
7/19/2011 6:27:44 PM
just finished. thought it was awesome. wow on the wall.
7/21/2011 12:30:57 PM
SPOILER POST!!! DO NOT READ THIS POST UNLESS YOU'VE FINISHED WITH A DANCE WITH DRAGONS OR OTHERWISE JUST WANT TO SPOIL THE BIGGEST SHOCKER IN THE BOOK!!!Why does Martin feel the need to kill or torture every single Stark character (assuming he goes through with killing off Snow)? I mean, I found the Watch turning on Jon Snow a little hard to believe. Maybe if there was a more gradual betrayal, but to me, there just wasn't enough in the book or in the series that makes their betrayal of Jon Snow seem believable or plausible. Am I the only one who found this a stretch? I don't know, maybe it's just that I'm pissed that Snow might actually be dead.[Edited on July 21, 2011 at 1:30 PM. Reason : more space]

^SPOILERI'm hoping either melisandre did some kind of glamor on jon or for a resurrection. if thoros could do it multiple times, why not her? also, it'd be lame as hell to keep killing off starks soon after their direwolf freaks out. i feel like jon and ghost had a stronger bond than robb & greywind but idk. maybe the "daggers in the dark" alluded to the epilogue rather than jon?END SPOILER
7/21/2011 1:55:43 PM
ALSO SPOILER (though people shouldn't be touching this thread until they're done)probably why red chick kept warning Jon to keep his wolf close to him. The six skins guy shifted into his wolf, so this might happen to Jon. I'd assume he's coming back in some form, because he seems to have stopped killing off important characters. (The 998th commander also seems like someone else will be 999, he'll come back as whatever reborn and be 1000)It'd be nice if he didn't bring everyone back all the time though. END SPOILER[Edited on July 21, 2011 at 2:38 PM. Reason : blarg]
7/21/2011 2:38:12 PM
SPOILERMelisandre thinks that Stannis is Azor Ahai reborn. For a while I thought it had to be Dany, but now I think it's Jon. The prophecy says that AA will be born under a bleeding star, among salt and smoke. Remember when she looked in the flames and said something like, "I asked to see Azor Ahai and I'm shown only Snow." HINT HINT??? The knight that Wen Wen was bashing had a star as his sigil, Jon's wounds were smoking, and one of the attackers was crying. I suspect that Jon will be back somehow. Here's some more info on Azor Ahai if you can't remember the detailshttp://towerofthehand.com/essays/chrisholden/azor_ahai_reborn.htmlFor me, the biggest shock was Aegon being alive. I cackled with delight when that came out.END SPOILER
7/21/2011 3:19:25 PM
SPOILER (seriously, maybe we need to adjust this thread or create a Dance with Dragons thread)I was surprised but not shocked by the betrayal. He'd been pushing Bowen Marsh's faction for a while, and you could see the resentment building with each step (Wildlings, Giants, and then the last straw the march on Ramsay Bolton). While I didn't expect it to turn out the way it did, I was anticipating through the whole book when they'd make a real assassination attempt on him.I expect Jon to be back though. They've run too many stories through him to completely remove him from the story. If they can bring about Zombie Cat, then some reincarnation of Jon shouldn't be far fetched. The epilogue was more of a surprise to me if anything, and yes, I too was tickled when they surprised us with Aegon.END SPOILER[Edited on July 21, 2011 at 3:52 PM. **** spoiler****the thing with killing off snow is that it would not make sense for them to bring up the rheagar lyanna thing so much unless there kid was a major player in the series ie jon
7/21/2011 5:23:35 PM
Finished it! If book six ever get written it's going to be ^^^, ^^Agreed on identity of AA
7/21/2011 6:23:59 PM
Fuck the spoiler tags, if you are in here you are done with the book. Its pretty obvious what grrm is doing. I hesitate to say that though as so often he leads you to think something will happen and it doesnt at all. But- he stated the boy will become a wolf then a man. Combine that with the prologue and all the mentions of dying and getting stuck in whatever they warged into. Jons last word was Ghost. He saw himself getting stabbed in the back.. hes obviously going to be stuck in Ghost till Meli pulls him out.Of course this is grrm so he will make us wait 6 years to find out Jon is dead and Melisandre is just a fraud.
7/21/2011 6:29:58 PM
^Agreed, but just to be polite, SPOILERS:It's extremely unlikely that Jon is permanently dead (I hate that you have to qualify that with this series). It's been floating around on the internet but the AA prophecy was in full effect during his assassination [attempt] - per the stated prophecy: when the red star bleeds (Ser Patrek) and the darkness gathers (time of day), Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke (Jon's blood was smoking) and salt (Bowen Marsh's tears) to wake dragons out of stone (pending?)Other thoughts: -Reek's arc was really, really good. Probably the best POV.-Dany had her moments in the first three books but she was awful in ADWD, excluding her last two chapters. Fucking do something already.-As an interesting character, Tyrion regressed. Considerably.-Lots of standing around, banquet/clothing descriptions, and chapters with people inching from one area to the next-Winds of Winter should be good, if and when we get it.End Spoilers

i really really like barristen. dany's "oh my daario i want you inside me but you can't because i'm the queen"chapters got old quick. however, i thought the part at the fighting pit was awesome, only to find her subsequent chapter not awesome.with jon "dead" he is potentially free from his vows so he could marry dany.i've thought that jon is azor azai more or less from the beginning although aegon is a very strong possibility now, especially with him being "the prince who was promised". whoever it is, i hope he forges lightbringer in dany's heart just because i think that would be awesome. melisandre seeing jon or "snow" when trying to see stannis would also strongly support that.i'm hoping bran played a part during theon's being "theon" again and i also hope it was bran warged into mormont's raven when it said "jon snow" for the first time.i'm also starting to think that the tree man bran is hanging out with is "the great other" or at least the deity/thing that is at war with the red priests and/or evil. once they got to the tree man's lair, jojen got really emo, which to me, would signify that tree man is not the one eyed crow. but the children of the forest complicate things so idk.I look forward to finding the answers in 5+ years edit: also the "star knight" sir patrek that wun wun killed was the result of a bet GRRM lost. it had something to do with the nfl playoffs but basically if GRRM lost, he had to put this guy (who is a dallas cowboys fan) in ADWD and kill him off in a gruesome and memorable way. After finishing DWD I am convinced that the three heads of the dragon are Patchface, Wun Wun, and Dolorous Edd
7/21/2011 11:02:06 PM
Whats the general consensus on Theon? I personally started sympathizing with Jamie during his chapters, despite his pushing Bran out the window, he really wasnt a bad guy. But I don't think I've forgiven Theon at all for backstabbing the Starks, even with all the trauma he has been through.
7/22/2011 9:37:46 AM
I was relatively indifferent to Theon in book 1 and thought he was a mean ol' jerk for books 2-4 (but not entirely unsympathetic). Seems like most people hated Theon for betraying the Starks.Martin loves turning the "traditional villain" convention on its head and he definitely did a nice job in Dance. Theon was nearly non-redeemable and he became sympathetic in this book (if only due to presence of Ramsay, who amounts to a caricature).I think it's telling that the television show focuses quite a bit on Theon and portrays him with equal parts privilege/ambition and as dopey whipping boy.[Edited on July 22, 2011 at 11:27 AM. ^that was dany, he said pending in reference to jon potentially fulfilling the prophecy
7/22/2011 12:31:16 PM
either way, i don't think you-know-who is dead and gone forever. he'll be back one way or another. he might even still be alive; we don't know for sure yet that he is even dead. as someone else pointed out, there are just too many storylines that run through him for him to not factor into the series anymore.
7/22/2011 12:39:18 PM
I really liked Theon in this book. Sure he was a toolbag before Ramsey got him but DAMN! His transformation from Reek into Theon made his the most interesting chapters to read. He even seemed to go back to his old ways with the spearwives at Winterfell. He doesn't respect women any more than he used to!PS ... I recently realized that Abel and his washerwomen were Mance and the spearwives sent by Jon! So did Ramsay really get them? He must have, or he wouldn't know who they were. I think the part about killing Stannis is a lie though. ]
7/22/2011 2:45:03 PM
^also, fun fact, when jon was with mance as a "defector" mance told jon the story of bael the bard who was a well known raider who infiltrated winterfell and played them music. abel is bael with letters switched around.
7/22/2011 3:38:57 PM
^, ^^ Westeros.org had a thread that posted all of the great little details from the book that you (read: I) may have missed. Some include:- Wyman Manderly pulling an Eric Cartman with the meat pies+dead Freys- Arya poisoning the coin to kill her target (as he always bit on the coins to verify their authenticity)- Lemore's identity...Ashara Dayne, maybe, possibly...?- Three Eyed Crow = Bloodraven- Jon Connington being a homo for Rhaegar- Aegon being a fake, perhaps?- Rickon is on Skagos (cannibal island)- Someone mentioned that Mance could have sent the letter to Jon (though for what purpose, I have no clue) as he would certainly know all the details contained in the letter. It wouldn't make sense for Ramsay to not have recovered Theon/Jeyne if he had actually defeated Stannis- Quentyn dying = "sun setting in the east" part of Dany's prophecy from Mirri Maz Duur- Ser Robert Strong (just kidding. this one was televised as fuck)[Edited on July 22, 2011 at 5:49 PM. Yeah I thought she just coated the coin in poison and somehow the sailor didn't touch it. Or he did and died later, because she seems to like murdering everyone
7/22/2011 10:09:50 PM
but the kindly man told her to only kill her target, that the Faceless Men aren't butchers (when she wanted to kill the guards)the sailor only touched the coin, so he didn't die. The insurance man died from biting it. ]
