I am so in love with this bloomer pattern! It takes about a yard of fabric and they are adorable. They make great pajama shorts. Plus its free- you just have to print it out.

sooo the international quilt festival was all last week in houston. i went twice. mind blown.

they have award winning quilts and all that but they also have a market where people sell patterns, fabric, notions, whatever!! i spent an obscene amount of money on the most gorgeous fabric & fun patterns!! i also picked up a tutorial & fabric kit to learn the paper piecing technique (i'm not sure what the actual name of it is but it looks like this)



i will post pics of my fabric in about 2 weeks (on vacay)

I've been sewing short little satin lounge robes lately- been trying to design a decent, simple pattern. It needs to be a touch wider in the front still, but it is almost there.

So this is embarassing as a guy, but I just got a Brother SE-400.

Do you gals mind if I ask questions as I learn how to sew and stuff? I bought it mainly to make equipment covers for my machinery in the workshop, but now that I have it, more stuff is piling up.

I messed with the embroidery thing on it, and it was neat. I tried without backing material and it all bunched up, so I tried again with it, and it came out awesome.

I would google for sewing machine cover tutorials. You can follow the instructions to make a cover for just about anything. Sooooo many tutorials & blogs out there!

I'm going to make an infinity dress thing with black straps and a glittery bottom for our vegas vacation. Have the strap fabric (black spandex knit), just need to go to Joanns to get stuff for the bottom. Will post pics.

^ what is your intention as far as wearing it?

my sewing buddy gave me this pattern for my bday

im awful at choosing fabric. the pattern suggests silk, crepe de chine, lightweight cotton, lightweight linen & rayon

i found a navy shirting with slight geometric pattern i like but a) it's probably not recommended for a reason and b) probably because it would be too stiff

what are ye thoughts tww ladies who sew?

i like it but im scared of silk even though i have a serger. im still scared of using it & it has come unthreaded and i cant get it threaded

I think where you would run into trouble with shirting is in the sleeves. Because of the way it looks like the sleeves are supposed to poof out near the elbow, the shirting would just make it look stiff. Now, if you wanted to try making the dress without the sleeves I bet it would look fine with shirting. Heck worse case you can just rip the sleeves out and hem the bodice and it'll just be a dress with wide shoulder straps

You could even leave the sleeves and just hem them instead of putting the band on the bottom. I think it would probably be appropriate. Why don't you try making it out of something a similar weight, but cheaper? I usually plan on making 2 versions of projects that I care about.

You could also use it as an opportunity to embrace your serger to make it less scary. Get some cheap stuff to practice with, find a tutorial video on how to thread and bust it out! Peachskin silk is easier to work with imo because it is less slippery so your pins hold.

Personally, I'd use an airy cotton or linen for this, because all of those button holes would not agree in silk on my machine.

Sorry to double post, but I just finished a dress! It's based on B5603, one of those retro Butterick patterns. I totally reworked the bodice to accommodate some extra curve and added a collar. I've got a yellow petticoat on the way to go with it- probably going to wear it to a summer wedding.

as far as the buttons, i'm no fool. no way in hell i am handsewing on many buttons (and make button holes for all of them!!) i plan to do a modified version either with non functional buttons, snaps and or a zipper. i also like the tie at the neck the dress i posted added

this is a super easy quilt its called a "crazy quilt" i did the backing with whats called minky which is a really soft fleecy material

mom loved it & it was easy peasy!

Love the quilts!

My project for today is learning about spandex and making a custom one-piece. I used patternschool.com to make a pattern last week. The thought is that if I measured correctly, I just cut it out, stitch it together, insert some elastic and get a bathing suit in the end. Right. At least I have plenty of fabric for redos.

I'm mostly doing it so I can practice with the materials before starting into my big project for the summer, a PowerGirl costume (She is a DC Superhero, kind of like SuperGirl from another universe) for a competition. That's a pretty intricate body suit with princess seams and a keyhole. I know I can do it, but it terrifies me, so I'm working up to it!

I'm getting ready to make a wallet. I hate bulky wallets and I've had lots of trouble finding slim ones that hold cash as well as cards, so I've decided to make one out of an old deer hide and some crocheting thread. I will post pictures!

I got the fabric at Joann's. It's got an asian-ish print with cherry blossoms and temples on it. Bright and summery, but a nice break from the over the top floral prints.

The best part is that it was easy. Next time I might just buy a big square scarf and cut a hole in the middle so I don't have to hem the skirt. That was the worst part, but it looks much dressier with the silky bottom I think. I did a handkerchief hem, so it was pretty long and annoying.

I don't do much sewing now, but once we get a house I might get one to make sewing curtains and that sort of stuff easier. Curtains, tablecloths, and napkins are way expensive for what you get.
