heartbeat to determine if its being worn? that seems like an unnecessary use of battery, what is the advantagE?
4/29/2015 11:18:21 AM
I mean that's a secondary purpose over it being an actual heart rate monitor but yeah wonder how much it impacts battery.
4/29/2015 11:22:42 AM
Certainly they could have picked a better way to detect if the thing is being worn, I mean these screens work on capacitance....why not use capacitance to detect if it is on someone's wrist, and use the heartbeat function just for the....heartbeat.First of all, I don't see why someone would use the watch for Apple Pay, but that's just me...my question is why would that feature be disabled (and no override) if you are not wearing it.
4/29/2015 2:58:29 PM
Look I have an apple watch and battery life is not an issue. I wore it most of the day except for a couple hours after work, moderate use with some texts and twitter notifications. Checked weather ever now and then. Also tracked a 30 min run. Just put it on the charger at 47% tonight. It could probably last 2 days if you don't track workouts. Using the heart rate monitor to make sure it is secure has no noticeable impact to battery. Apparently it checks your heart rate in the background every 10 minutes anywayIt's not just apple pay (which is a big security concern), if someone got ahold of the watch they could pretty much have the same access to your info as your phone...messages, contacts, photos, etc.[Edited on April 29, 2015 at 11:37 PM. No

^^ BWAHAHAHAHAHA
4/30/2015 9:29:53 AM
Mine does not check my heart rate every 10 mins. Most of the time when I go to the heart rate monitor, it says the last one was read an hour ago. Battery life hasn't been an issue for me either. I've had mine since Tuesday (27th) morning. I've been running (and listening to music) with mine as well.

i must have misunderstood your post, it sounded like you were saying the heartbeat monitor was for apple pay and other security. i still don't really see the advantage of doing that, and I know that heartbeat monitors can sometimes fail if a device is worn loosely or if someone is particularly hairy (at least with other devices), so I'm curious why they chose to do that. yeah my first post wasnt very clear. the sensor is just used to detect if someone (anyone) is wearing it. like i said, once it detects that there is no one wearing it, then it requires a passcode to unlock.
4/30/2015 1:02:18 PM
It's not in the health app. It's in the Activity app. It has the same 3 color wheel thingy as its icon. The source is definitely the watch. Right this second, it's caught up & both are showing the same numbers. Have you checked out any screen protectors? I'm paranoid & kinda think I might need one. My previous watch (a Suunto, way bigger than this 42mm Apple watch) got beat the hell up bc I sling my wrists into door frames for some unknown reason.
4/30/2015 2:42:37 PM
ah, i never check that app either, but right now they are synced as well. i dont see myself using any screen protectors or cases. i think it will just make it look even more bulky (its not too bad but still). i did get apple care+ however, just cause i think this could get damaged easier than a phone.

Open sourcing Swift is actually pretty huge (potentially).By far the biggest news is native Apple Watch apps along with direct sensor access. This means the watch is no longer tied to an iOS master device, and can potentially work standalone or with any other platform.I loved all the "new" windowing features were ripped directly from Windows 8 / 10.And lollercoaster at ^
6/8/2015 7:55:20 PM
speaking of the window snapping/etc, for those interested there's a free mac app named spectacles that's awesome for it. use it all the time
6/8/2015 9:35:12 PM
^^ clearly inspired by Windows (i don't know any mac user that doesn't user a 3rd party window snapping app-- it is probably the best Window UI innovation in 15 years). Ironically, I spend most of my work day in windows 8, and never use it's app split screen mode, but it looks like apple did a better job integrating this into the OS.
6/8/2015 11:12:14 PM
Saw this tweeted, this is interesting: Apple has basically deprecated HTTP in iOS 9 and OS X 10.11. To use unsecured HTTP, you have to ask for an exception in your app manifest.Kind of makes existing packet sniffing tools/techniques a little useless.

If Apple makes it as customizable/robust as the "Spectacle" app (they probably won't) it'll be pretty sweet. Especially splitting windows vertically and horizontally via keyboard.. use those constantly.Options (from the Spectacle menu bar):

That's a third party app? Yeah I use those daily. All built into Windows 8.

iOS 9 is surprisingly stable. The floating video window is really well implemented, i've found myself using it a lot already.
6/11/2015 12:41:33 AM
A few years ago when that feature was big on like the Samsung Note and Galaxy Tablets I would always show it off and Apple folks would always say it was a silly feature and why would you need it on a tablet or phone. Not saying Apple isn't making it better but there's this cycle I've noticed where I call out a cool feature that Google or Samsung has implemented then years later Apple adds it to iOS. Resolution was a big one. I remember way back in 2007-2008 I was raving about all the new smart phones (Sony specifically) with high resolution screens. Everyone was like "why would you ever need high resolution screens on a cell phone?!?". Haha. Same thing with laptops.

^ I see what you're saying, but I don't think not seeing the unrealized potential of a technology is exclusive to Apple users.
6/11/2015 1:06:48 PM
Oh yeah not saying it is. I agree. It's pretty universal. Back in 2002-2003 when I had a 320 by 480 internet connected palm pilot (Sony Clie) I had a long list of features that would be cool (higher resolution, multi-touch support, etc). It took 5-8 years for most of them to be implemented. It's more just me saying "I told you so!" to some people.

The split screen mode in el capitan is pretty well implemented. The fact that it's its own desktop makes it a little nicer than how Windows does it i think.I had a web conference split with a browser of relevant info, but could just swipe over to my other workspaces without disrupting any window positions or anything like that... very smooth.
7/2/2015 12:32:03 PM
so instead of snapping windows you basically have 2 half resolution desktops?
7/2/2015 12:47:01 PM
https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/Photoshop 5 might not work in el capitan but this looks like a competent replacement if you don't want to move to CC for photo stuff.
