I guess in the success dept, yeah. But Avent is charismatic and has some fire to him. Herb was a wet blanket. Their personalities couldn't be more opposite.

i do think, from my limited viewing of wolfpack baseball every may/june, that he plays too much small ball

but i also don't think he's some shitty coach who should be fired

Thank you....he bunts with EVERYONE. He even has all-world-homerun hitter Mathews bunting.

It's college ball, 5/6 run innings are possible.

I really wouldn't consider Mathews to be all-world as a power hitter. Usually the label of "all-world" makes me think of guys like Josh Hamilton, Prince Fielder, Matt Kemp, and Albert Pujols to name a few.

^^There have only been 17 games (28% of our season) where opponents have scored 6 or more runs, out of those games I doubt they scored all the runs in one inning. 5-6 run innings are possible but not likely. I list all this to say, I bet he is going with the percentages that a runner scores from second more than he does from first, and to keep out of the double play.

and 1 homer every 12AB is not all-world in college

Didnt watch last night's game but good job coming back to win 2 in a row and take the Regional

In my limited viewing, I do kind of scratch my head with his coaching but I also notice a lot of other college coaches have a hard on for bunts. Not sure what theyre all getting at.

End of the day...as long as he produces (and a Super Regional this year works), I'm good

I don't get the hate for bunting, stealing bases or otherwise trying to get runners in scoring position, especially with less than two outs and especially with our team speed. The hit and run in the ninth last night was a perfect example of when Avent pushes the right buttons. Not every team is equipped for "pitching, defense, and the three-run homer" (although the three-run homer in the eighth was a thing of beauty).

And whatever we're doing is working just fine. We outscored teams 56-31 in the regional.

With the new bats it most certainly is. He is 10th in the country.

[Edited on June 5, 2012 at 11:30 AM. Reason : Hell he hit 3 in this regional....]

Yes. It wasn't pretty. But even then, that's more of an argument FOR small ball than against. If you have trouble scoring, you have to squeak out runs any way you can.

Even the most staunch Avent supporters believe he bunts too much, just stop it.

Moving on to UF.

I'd like a face style analysis of this juggernaut. Do they have a weakness?

I dont mind sac bunting but you dont do that against a pitcher that hasn't proven he can get outs consistently against you. Like the first game against holy cross or whatever, we had gone through 7 batters had no outs and had multiple runs on the board in the first inning. Why give them an out if they havent proven they can get you out in the first place? Or last night in the first inning, turner nails the pitcher in the foot and makes it to first. Why would you bunt with our 2 hitter in the first with the best base stealer in college on first. Turner being on base changes the game, dont take that away by bunting, let the dude run. Also we dont know how the pitchers foot injury was going to affect his pitching (and it obviously affected him negatively). And I don't care what term you call him, matthews is hitting a home run every third game or so and is our best power hitter, he should never bunt.

Also he left jurnigan in way too long. It was obvious by middle of the 3rd he lost confidence/command of his fastball and was pitching nothing but offspeed pitches. Yes he came back out in the 4th and looked good, but you let him give up 5 runs in an inning while you let him try and figure his shit out.

OTHER THAN THAT, great job!

IMO, should have started Jernigan against Wilmington on Sunday morning. We were going to out-hit them regardless. Their pitching was boned and they sucked anyway, excluding Cain and Molineri. It worked out, so it's whatever.

People complaining about bunting don't understand these new bats or the team speed we have. If you don't like it, you're best staying at home next year. Ciencin and Mathews are gone for sure. Canela could go pro. That is all of our power, unless you count Senay, who I wouldn't count, but he has hit for power before.

Welp, I was wrong. Danny will not go pro because he was not drafted.

Must say I am a bit surprised by that. Chris Diaz will be the only State draftee who still has eligibility remaining. Very high probability that he is gone.

Not too terribly hard to replace at shortstop. Trea and Ratledge both played shortstop in high school. I love the sound of reloading and not waiting for a class like this year's to come a long every blue moon to save us..

Pinch hit Rodon who has batted 5 times this year in a big spot.

Now is bringing closer Overman in a 7-0 game. More head scratchers.

Maybe that call will get him out. Give him a free membership to Lonnie Poole.

Possibly the most underachieving team in NCSU sports history.

I hope we can get most of the guys from the recruiting class on campus as it seems that next years class has some potential difference makers that would be in the line-up, but you have to wonder a little bit about Avent and the team going forward. We don't have anyone you can look at in the rotation next season and feel good about at all - plus we're going to continue to lose guys out of the bullpen like we did after last season. There's also been rumors before of Yow and Avent not exactly seeing eye to eye.

I think the recent upgrades to ballpark may buy him a little more time (plus the CWS a few years ago). The upgrades may give him a chance to further improve recruiting and raise expectations a bit. Seems to me that, unlike some other ACC schools, we don't put a ton of money into baseball. So the expectations may be a bit lower than other sports.

Well...that's not exactly what I meant. Obviously he's been able to get good talent here. But I guess I was looking at it from a money standpoint. We seem to be getting results that match (or exceed, some years) the amount of investment we have in baseball. And I know that's not the entire picture. But I do think that's a significant part of it when it comes to non-revenue sports.

I know they do them for basketball and football - but I'd be interested in seeing where we rank on a list of baseball programs in terms of money spent/money generated.
