The Mariner's Revenge Song
1/28/2011 11:41:03 AM
^ I've never understood all the love for that song. I like the Decemberists a lot, but I've always really hated that song. I can't even listen to it all the way through... really grates on my nerves.

gave the new ak/fam some quality listening time this weekend. really solid top to bottom.

New Bright Eyes is really good... sounds much more like "older" Bright Eyes, which is a refreshing change from the more rootsy Americana material he's been putting out with his solo material. This new record starts to get a little monotonous around tracks 7 and 8, but it quickly gets back on course with track 9.

The new telekinesis isn't bàd. There's a few good ones, but nothing that special really. Should be an ok opener for the love language though.
2/1/2011 8:30:41 AM
has anyone listened to the new Death?
2/1/2011 11:34:13 AM
^^i just listened to it and most of it felt like elevator music to me. granted i was busy with work, but nothing made me stop short and listen intently

New Thursday song streaming on Spin: http://www.spin.com/articles/hear-music-thursday-reveal-edgy-new-albumI know not many people here will care. I still get all their albums even though I am generally continually disappointed. New song is actually pretty decent though. Not what I expected, but in a good way.
2/1/2011 12:40:12 PM
Really liking the new bright eyes
2/1/2011 1:16:00 PM
really?i thought it was boring.
2/1/2011 1:21:26 PM
I think it's far more interesting compared to some of oberst's recent material
2/1/2011 1:26:31 PM
while we're on the topic of bright eyes, i noticed yesterday the similarity to the beginning of Poison Oak from I'm Wide Awake It's Morning to and Uncle Tupelo's Fatal Wound from March 16-20, 1992.or am i crazy
2/1/2011 2:40:13 PM
i'm not going to lie, the new Iron & Wine makes me happy. there are a couple terrible tracks but overall i kinda like it.
2/1/2011 5:02:20 PM
I can't really listen to anything Conor Oberst-related anymore. Overdosed on that shit in high school. Though I do think a lot of those Bright Eyes albums are still pretty good and stand the test of time if you are in the right mood - unlike a lot of the other emo-y high school stuff I liked that has not aged well (Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, The Anniversary, Rainer Maria etc)
2/1/2011 5:48:20 PM
really liking the new starfucker, smith westerns, and destroyer albums
2/1/2011 6:40:49 PM
after listening to the new bright eyes a second time, it seems like it really benefits from being heard through headphones. i enjoyed it more through shitty ipod earbuds than my computer speakers, which are actually pretty good.
2/1/2011 7:16:36 PM
^ totally agree. and, while the spoken-word segments tacked on to the beginnings and endings of several songs don't bother me nearly as much as I know they'll bother some people, they do make casual listening of individual songs a little difficult
2/1/2011 8:04:23 PM
i don't mind it just because that guy is so fucking ridiculous. and he only appears on the first song, the last song, and one song in the middle, right? or am i forgetting some other times? and i think his rant on "one for you, one for me" fits into the overall message of the album, but it's completely wtf on "firewall"

Just got an email from Third Man.The White Stripes are over.
2/2/2011 12:53:11 PM
damn

2/2/2011 1:10:27 PM
2/2/2011 1:18:13 PM
But...but they were supposed to release a new album
2/2/2011 1:29:14 PM
I, for one, am very saddened by the news of The White Stripes' breakup. The fact that they quit before irreparably damaging their legacy is a decision that I know I'll come to respect, but right now, I'm just too bummed about it Since I was 18 years old, they've consistently been one of my favorite bands (even if their last record or two wasn't up to snuff). One of the best artists of this generation, beyond a shadow of a doubt. I'm disappointed that I never got to see them perform live.
2/2/2011 4:02:56 PM
^ that's ultimately how i feel, only i think GBMS is pretty underrated, and icky thump will always remind me of the summer of 07 when i literally did nothing for 3 months. they were #1 on my list of bands i really wanted to see, and now i have to refer to everything about them in the past tense.
2/2/2011 4:26:42 PM
super glad I got to see them during their peak in 03
2/2/2011 4:32:58 PM
^^Yeah, man, I totally agree; the hardest thing is getting used to talking about them in the past tense. And I agree that GBMS is generally a little underrated. Icky Thump was solid, but I am (there I go in the present tense again!) not nuts about it. I am--err, was--, however, crazy about every one of their first four records.[Edited on February 2, 2011 at 4:35 PM. Reason : .]
2/2/2011 4:35:20 PM
Saw them four times from '99 to '03. Absolute dynamite every time. I agree that it'll be a credit to them later that their records got weird, but never bad.
2/2/2011 4:50:04 PM
this also makes what they did in canada in 2007 that much more awesome, but at the same time it'll make watching the documentary about it really difficult to watch for a while.
2/2/2011 6:58:08 PM
I <3 that documentary
2/2/2011 7:08:03 PM
yeah, it's fantastic. but never seeing them live will probably be one of my biggest regrets for the rest of my life, so watching that will be frustrating. i don't know why i didn't drive down to myrtle beach to see them in 07, and i just assume they must not have come through NC in 05. a bunch of my friends saw them in 03, and i can't even remember why i didn't go to that.[Edited on February 2, 2011 at 7:12 PM. Reason : .]
2/2/2011 7:11:40 PM
Also adds an interesting twist to the end of that documentary when Meg breaks down crying. I always wondered why she got so emotional. Now we might have a better idea.
2/2/2011 10:40:32 PM
So the white stripes broke up?Eh, it ain't like Jack White died or nothin'.
2/2/2011 10:40:45 PM
^ true, and i think jack white will be making music as long as he has a pulse, but i've seen both the raconteurs and the dead weather, and while i enjoyed the hell out of the raconteurs (dead weather was alright too), i could tell from that documentary and other concert footage that there was ( ) a dynamic within the white stripes that doesn't exist in the other bands. i still enjoy those bands even though they aren't really doing anything special, but the white stripes were ( ) just on a whole different level. i can't say i'm surprised that they broke up even though they were ( ) planning on recording another album. i'm sure i'll see jack white again some time in the future. but there's still the crushing disappointment of knowing i will probably never see him at his best.
2/2/2011 11:12:52 PM
Can someone tell me how the Yuck album is? Get Away is probably my "it" song right now, i love the lo-fi throwback vibe to it with that guitar hook. Hoping the rest falls right in line.
2/3/2011 9:56:37 AM
I like the Yuck album a lot
2/3/2011 2:45:04 PM
2/3/2011 4:50:10 PM
^Because we feel an emotional attachment to certain musicians through the music they create, I guess. That Yuck album rules. It's a surprisingly diverse album, too. They were (much) better than Smith Westerns when I saw them at 506.[Edited on February 3, 2011 at 5:01 PM. Reason : .]
