I buy hours-old rolls from the grocery store and eat them at home, alone, at 11pm on a tuesday.I am just that hip.

I guess I don't understand the "fad" tag with sushi. I agree it is more popular now, but not everything that gets popular is a "fad." Plenty of things end up sticking. I've been having sushi for probably 10 years and have never seen it as a "fad" of any kind. It has definitely gotten more popular over the past 4-5 years (mainly there are more sushi restaurants around), but I've attributed that more to just more people trying and liking sushi than it being a "fad."I'd eat a good plate of sushi over a steak any day of the week. That being said, grocery store rolls are pretty disgusting.[Edited on November 22, 2010 at 9:20 AM. The Breakfast Club is what first peaked my interest. Claire (Molly Ringwald) ate it for lunch. I did not get to taste it til I was, I think, 15.
11/22/2010 9:26:16 AM
sushi is definitely a fad, but it's on the decline these days.
11/22/2010 9:33:20 AM
I miss the sushi restaurant I used to go to all the time. $1/plate sushi. Quality was sometimes questionable but you learned which plates to avoid after awhile http://www.akindo-sushiro.co.jp/menu/item.phpNOM NOM NOM

You people will be back to cooking your fish in no time
11/22/2010 11:13:05 AM
Maybe another 10 years will change my mind I enjoy cooked seafood plenty. Completely different meals though.
11/22/2010 11:18:03 AM
Sushi is not a fad -- it is here to stay. Also, it's better than cooked fish.... as in, a medium-rare steak is better than well-done steak.
11/22/2010 11:21:09 AM
well of course sushi will be around... but the craze will (and already is) dying down.
11/22/2010 11:23:43 AM
Craze? I guess that's different from a fad....What would you call what's going on with pizza?
11/22/2010 11:29:55 AM
I would have to say everything that is mainstream was a fad at some point. Sushi was a fad, but now it has become a main stay in american culture.

I dont like fish... but the best "sushi" I have had was raw Kobe beef on rice. Nigiri style I guess.Fan-fucking-tastic.
11/22/2010 11:32:14 AM
^^^ that's more how I feel about it. I certainly don't see it as any fad that is "dying down." Still seem to be more sushi places popping up left and right and the ones I've been to for years are as busy as ever.

Just noticed this thread, and would like to point out that I agree with the original post verbatim.

How about steak tartare?:nom:
11/22/2010 12:02:13 PM
i've never tried this. i guess it could be good.
11/22/2010 12:04:36 PM
^^^ what is all this stuff in the rolls you speak of? You know there are tons of different kinds of rolls right? Including the most basic ones that are just the rice, seaweed, and choice of seafood right?I mean, sure, if you specifically order a roll that is crab, avocado, cream cheese, roe, goma and cucumber or something you'll get a lot of stuff in there. My favorite roll is a simple eel or eel+avocado roll.[Edited on November 22, 2010 at 12:12 PM. Reason : .]

Ever noticed how sushi lover can't seem to let anyone who doesn't like sushi off the hook? Its fucking cultish. Seriously, no one eating celery has ever offered me a stick and, when I decline, insisted that I just hadn't tried the right kind of celery, gushed about how awesome celery was and made it out into a big fucking deal.F'n a. You people are like fucking pushers.
11/22/2010 1:46:10 PM
oh, i have no problem with people who have tried and don't like it. but, with any food (or anything really) i'm all about some "don't knock it til you tried it." i will annoy people until they try it at least, but if they've tried, well, more sushi for me.
11/22/2010 1:48:16 PM
Comparing celery to sushi isn't really equal. It's like when you tell someone you don't like Carolina BBQ and they go, "You've just been eating that western BBQ bullshit, that's not even BBQ, you need to try REAL BBQ RAWR RAWR RAWR."
11/22/2010 1:51:17 PM
I thought I would dislike it as well until I was drunk at a friend's going away party at Wasabi and I actually tried it.The first time I ate it sober I had to re-convince myself that it had been good the first time I tried it, but I was admittedly skeptical until I actually put it in my mouth. Ever since then I've enjoyed it on occasion. After you have it a few times you stop thinking about it as "raw meat" and start thinking about it as sushi. The flavors really are good and the texture was nothing like I was expecting.I wouldn't knock anyone who hasn't tried it or tried it and doesn't like it though. To each his own.[Edited on November 22, 2010 at 1:52 PM. Reason : l]

Crunchy Rolls and Veggie Rolls are really all I need.

Obviously not eating sushi
11/22/2010 3:52:33 PM
It probably just hasn't had good sushi, you know? Probably where it lives there's not good availability of quality ingredients.
11/22/2010 3:54:51 PM
My favorites are tuna/avocado and salmon/cream cheese.
11/22/2010 3:56:57 PM
^^ I lol'd
11/22/2010 4:03:14 PM
^^ You get it from Whole Foods don't you?OMG ME TOO!!!!!!Srsly though, get them to make tuna cream cheese next time. Quite tasty.
11/22/2010 4:04:33 PM
Now that I've had my yearly ridiculously-expensive-sushi-dinner I can move on to elitism between burritos in the Triangle.
11/22/2010 4:05:32 PM
haha I have gotten sushi from Whole Foods before, but I get that at this Japanese restaurant close to me (I'm not in Raleigh).
11/22/2010 4:05:34 PM
Maybe all I need is a sushi buddy. In the past, I've only eaten sushi alone. But if I had someone to peer pressure me into liking it, perhaps I could pretend to enjoy it more.
