though many people will lose their jobs, the economic advantages of not having to pay people to sit in a truck their entire life will be unavoidable, and these companies will adopt self-driving systems as soon as safely possible. cost of transportation of goods will decrease, which will decrease the cost of goods that we pay, across the board."

so, the noble art of trucking will become completely obsolete

that makes me vaguely sad, honestly.

it's been 5 years since i posted this thread. seems pretty inevitable at this point. media reports on it regularly, the idea is starting to enter the general consciousness. Uber is positioning itself to be the self-driving taxi solution I originally mentioned, with Tesla possibly being the first auto maker that wants to be the auto maker AND the taxi service.

Y'all ready yet?

Law enforcement, who rely heavily on revenue from speeding tickets, will try to put a stop to any machine that can be programed to obey the law at all times.

Auto Insurance companies, who profit from the fallibility of humans behind the wheel, will fight any attempts to drain their income.

^yep. we have had the technology to limit the speed of a vehicle based on the road it's on for years. we haven't done it because speed limits are not about keeping people safe. they are about making money for the state.

So if a self driving car causes an accident, who is liable? This is the main reason why I think we are a long way off from this being common.

Oh, it completely changes the concept of liability in an accident.

"I wasn't driving...my car was"

The lability transfers to the auto maker and software developer, imo

I want to see how self-driving cars will handle aggressive drivers around the DC area. The footage I've seen from Google seems to show the cars waiting out uncomfortable situations, and I think people will learn how to slow down these automated cars by swerving at them and then taking their lane after the car slows down.

they're already handling some of those types of scenarios. they're not just following traffic laws verbatim. they are sensing the environment around them and reacting to it, and we can continuously optimize those reactions based on the results that are seen in the real world.

people can already do that with human-driven cars. why would they be more likely to do it with self-driving cars? people are generally just trying to get from place A to place B safely, not trying to one-up every thing on the street they can bully around...

and if you are in a car that somebody is getting aggressive with, the car you want to be in is the one that is going to calmly and safely respond, not the one that's going to get offended and try to be an asshole back to it, increasing the likelihood of a real accident.

you've lived in New York long enough to know that every cab driver in that city will turn left from the right lane and cut off 4 cars with the right-of-way if it gets them somewhere 5 seconds faster.

it does. robots have taken over manufacturing in the US... and what is left is outsourced. trucking is the next industry under fire from the automobile-borgs and eventually that industry will falter. we will still have an innovation class for a while, but since we export all technology production to china, how long do we really expect our collective innovation to keep us afloat?

not to mention rare earth metal supplies.

in 20 years, where do you see the american economy? (if 20 years down the line nothing changes and TWW still exists, and I am wrong, i will fully acknowledge i wasn't able to fully predict the future)

My brother would suck Elon Musks cock if presented. Bet him 50 bucks that all trucks will not be self automated in 5 years. Going to be more like 20.

it could happen in 5 years but it won't ever happen. even in 20 years, there will still be a lot of companies that rather keep the cheap, conventional trucks they own than take the leap in up-front costs.

I still feel like all it will take is one or two wrecks and the lawsuits that follow for this to end quickly. I believe this would lead to less wrecks overall probably but when they do happen the lawsuits will get ridiculous I am sure.
