Seeing this on Tuesday, getting more excited with all the great reviews.

I agree that it would have been better if Nina had loosened up a little more in some scenes and not pouted so much but I think about real girls I have known (one almost dead on) that remind me of her so I find her character believable.I think I liked the Wrestler better but I thought this was great and they complement each other in a way especially at the very end. I consider myself somewhat manly but I really enjoyed the ballet scenes. Disappointed by no Mila Kunis tits.

SPOILER POSTI watched this and aside from a good old-fashioned lesbian makeout I didn't find a lot to like. The characters all felt pretty one-dimensional and I thought there was way too much "Whoa she just killed Mila Kunis! OR DID SHE? Oh wait no she didn't, she killed herself! OR DID SHE? Mila Kunis exists! OR DOES SHE?" I guess I like there to be at least a hint of what's real and what's in the protagonist's mind, and there just wasn't in this. Also, I get that it's a stressful role or whatever but the extent of the hallucinations really early in the movie seemed kind of over the top. But whatever.

If you were fixated on figuring out what was real and what wasn't, I think you should go back and watch it again when it comes out on DVD without worrying so much about that. That stuff wasn't the focus of the movie to me; to me, it was more about Nina's obsession with perfection than about what was real and what wasn't.
12/24/2010 2:30:25 PM
i didn't mind her whining a lot. it seemed pretty believable that while having so much control while dancing she'd have almost complete lack of control in the rest of her life.
12/24/2010 2:33:18 PM
what was real and what wasn't was often obvious anyway.
12/24/2010 2:41:12 PM
Someone was complaining about the whining?? Ever been around a professional dancer before? The stress they are under combined with their hormones going nuts from whats going on with their bodies...it was pretty much on point. Those girls are crazy.

It must have pissed off aranofsky how natalie would breakout into spontaneous crying all throughout the movie
12/25/2010 12:56:09 AM
Characters with lack of spine seem to alienate a lot of people. I don't think anyone here really said the movie was unbearable because of Nina's character but some people try to macho themselves up by criticizing weak characters.Back in the day I used to love Neon Genesis Evangelion which had the weakest lead character of all time, Shinji. Kinda reminded me of Nina in a way. Seems like the only people who did not like the anime was because of Shinji.
12/25/2010 1:10:19 AM
^i was joking, the character cries cause they are weak, thats who she is
12/25/2010 2:20:39 PM
ha i remember portman spoke out against nudity/sex scenes but it seems like she's doing them left and right now, seems like all the actresses give in eventually
12/26/2010 7:13:41 PM
i think it was moreso she refused to do some provocative stuff when she was much younger
12/26/2010 10:02:01 PM
^^ afaik she never said she was completely against it. Maybe when she was much younger The quote that I remembered and just googled to find was:
12/27/2010 7:54:39 AM
^Yeah...but she still kept on her underwear.Sounds to me like she's never going to show her tits. Which is fine by me, because she barely has any tits to begin with. Maybe that scene would have been better with some nipples showing, but it didn't bother me.
12/27/2010 8:05:15 AM
Yeah I know. I guess I just mean it's not like she has actually done any actual nudity in films recently. Hotel Chevalier, Black Swan, Your Highness all have her character nude or in skimpy clothes but nothing actually shown which is not much different than Closer from 6-7 years ago. Not a strong point, just pointing out it's not like she went from nothing like that at all to doing full nudity in several films or anything.

12/27/2010 11:46:24 AM
^^but everyone has already seen those portman paparazzi photos, so no big deal

SEMI-SPOILER POST^Art imitates life? Sort of? Hopefully Natalie doesn't off herself.

I thought it was fantastic. The acting, the casting, the story, the way it was shot. Loved it.I also liked The Fountain. don't understand the hate on that one.
1/1/2011 10:17:42 PM
It's fun to rewatch this movie, and imagine Natalie is an anorexic who eats lipstick.
1/3/2011 4:04:52 AM
Wife dragged me to this one yesterday, I didn't know anything about it and thought it was some chick flick. Ended up really liking it and it was nothing like I expected.

Saw this movie rcently and it was alright. I mean I enjoyed it, but people talking about this as a movie of the year is just crazy. No where near that good.
1/3/2011 11:14:28 AM
^It is easily one of the five best pictures of the year. Without question. And I'd probably have it in the top 3 myself, contending with The Social Network and Winter's Bone, with Inception, 127 Hours, and a few more closely behind.
1/3/2011 2:41:47 PM
Definitely in my top 3 at the moment but I still have to see Winter's Bone, True Grit, The King's Speech, and Blue Valentine...
1/3/2011 2:51:51 PM
Yeah, I haven't seen The King's Speech or Blue Valentine yet, either, and both are supposed to be awesome. Also want to see/have heard good things about Biutiful starring Javier Bardem.
1/3/2011 4:47:58 PM
Saw it Saturday night and liked it a lot. The line between what's in her head and what's truly happening is definitely blurred throughout, but I had a fun time trying to distinguish. I'd be thoroughly surprised if Natalie Portman isn't nominated for an Oscar for the role (there's talk that Mila Kunis will be nominated for hers as well).
1/3/2011 4:54:22 PM
Loved it.I took dance for 16 years so there was an added bonus of enjoying the choreography too!Fucking crazy ass mother and I was in cringe mode through most of the movie, all the cutting of fingernails and skin-pulling. . . and yes I can think of more than a few girls that I know who are just like that, princess fairyland and all.Who else is going to be checking the corner of the room for their mother before they decide to masturbate?
1/7/2011 11:10:58 PM
this movie was absolutely turrible[Edited on January 8, 2011 at 12:43 AM. Reason : spelling]

^^lawlzThat's the most ballet I ever watched. I enjoyed the movie and it definitely played games with your mind.
1/9/2011 5:13:23 PM
I wish Requiem would have gotten the love this movie is getting.
1/9/2011 5:17:10 PM
Oh yeah I had a few questions:*** SPOILERS *****Do you think Nina actually stabbed Beth (the older chick who was hit by a car)?Is it possible that Nina had been fucking the director all along and not Lily?*** SPOILERS ***
1/9/2011 10:26:57 PM
Saw it tonight, was really surprised at how many people were there given this has been out for a couple weeks.
1/9/2011 10:30:01 PM
It was OKBasically $9 to see Natalie Portman go batshit crazy for two hours.
1/10/2011 8:01:00 PM
Pretty good, though I liked Requiem and Pi much better.Have not seen the wrestler and the fountain yet.
5/16/2011 1:10:49 PM
