I had the seafood soup with wheat noodles. It was good but I want to try the pad thai next time.
8/20/2010 12:40:54 PM
the pad thai is delightful
8/20/2010 12:43:20 PM
I had the skinny noodles with steak- it was dericiousgonna get the pad thai noodles next time and try the spicy crunchy dumplings
8/20/2010 12:44:56 PM
^^ I was waiting for you to catch that.
8/20/2010 12:47:26 PM
8/20/2010 12:53:22 PM
i've tried it twice. both times i have found it to be overrated.
8/20/2010 1:06:27 PM
I enjoyed it yesterday, especially what I paid for itand I'm about to go back again today (gf wants to try it) and I'm gonna try some dumplings!
8/20/2010 2:12:34 PM
Hmmm I might have to check this place out...finally a reason to go back to hillsborough st!
8/20/2010 2:13:44 PM
General "Mao's" and shrimp lo mein last night. It was awesome.
8/20/2010 2:19:07 PM
i'll definitely go back again soon...i may even get crazy and try something different
8/20/2010 2:26:31 PM
i guess i'm gonna try it a second time but def get something different than what i got the first time. if i'm not wowed this time then i prob won't go back.dumplings were definitely good.pho wasn't gross but it wasn't good either. it was just kinda there. and bland. even with the sauces and pepper mixed in. *SHRUG*
8/20/2010 4:22:48 PM
Went the other day, food was decent, service was great.
8/20/2010 8:17:02 PM
just got backhad the half-fried and the open top dumplings. both were fucking incredible. wonton soup was pretty good, i always love when they give you the crispy noodles to put in. finished off with the singapore rice stick noodles with beef.overall verdict:OM NOM NOM NOM
8/22/2010 4:03:36 PM
Dalat is kinda creepy, but they have damn good Pho. That is all.
8/22/2010 7:03:24 PM
gonna get dinner there tonight (davids dumpling, not dalat)^I actually always liked the food there, but service was abysmal[Edited on August 23, 2010 at 7:46 PM. Reason : not dalat]
8/23/2010 7:45:04 PM
I went for lunch the other day, and I was underwhelmed. Admittedly, I'm a smoker, and my food has really got to bring it in order to rock these taste buds, but still...I got the beef in black bean sauce, and it was very much lacking in taste. I like soy sauce/sugar/oil as much as the next guy, but I also need some garlic, ginger, curry, pepper, coriander, chili powder, whatever will make it taste...Dumplings were good though.
8/24/2010 10:56:56 PM
Went the other day for lunch and got takeout. I ordered David's Dumplings and an order of Edamame. Food came out within 6 minutes and the lady was super nice on the register. Dumplings were good and the edamame made an excellent on the go snack.
8/24/2010 11:52:52 PM
Finally made my way over there for dinner last night! Our appetizer was the half open dumplings and for my entree I had the singapore stick rice noodles with beef. The food was fantastic but the portion size was lacking. The instant my food came out I said to myself "not a chance that's enough food". I was left hungry, and was disappointed by that. It's nice if a restaurant has reasonably priced meals, but that is nullified by the fact that I need to eat two entrees of that size to be full. I'll definitely go back in the future b/c I enjoyed the food but will be certain to order two entrees for myself. So whatever draw this place had for a "reasonably" priced menu is gone in my eyes.
11/12/2010 9:31:05 AM
I think it also depends on what you orderi've been there 5 times now, and 2 of those times I cleared my plates, and the other times, I had left overslike the shrimp rangoon- it is amazing, but you only get a few pieces and it costs like 6 or 7 bucks. Some of the other dumplings are more bang for the buck. I always get a salad or soup too, so that helps...
11/12/2010 9:34:37 AM
Perhaps. $5.50 for 4 dumplings (appetizer) seems kinda pricey given the quantity.I like supporting Hillsborough St establishments and liked the food so I'll definitely go back. Lemme know the next time you head over there**I can't do weekday lunches
11/12/2010 9:43:37 AM
11/12/2010 9:44:26 AM
the portion sizes are definitely a bit underwhelming. better to go at lunch, cheaper and free ice tea
11/12/2010 10:20:06 AM
I went and ordered the pad thai and I was really happy with it. I want to go back.
11/12/2010 10:33:23 AM
Personally I'm glad they have smaller portion sizes. Get you fatties into shape
11/12/2010 1:46:17 PM
YOU CALLIN ME A FATTY???
11/12/2010 1:46:44 PM
Everyone knows this is a recent pic of you, grimx.
11/12/2010 1:48:12 PM
i put on 20 lbs since then
11/12/2010 1:51:26 PM
Thinkin I might pop on into Dalat after the game tonight for a little banh mi
11/12/2010 1:56:54 PM
I found the dinner portions at David's to be adequate. I ordered the Singapore noodles with beef.[Edited on November 12, 2010 at 3:05 PM. Reason : e]
11/12/2010 3:04:50 PM
^^ Dalat is sooooooooo good.
11/12/2010 5:54:35 PM
Thanks for dinner, TWW Master_Yoda saw the thread and decided to get take out for me while I was working on a project. We had pad thai, spring rolls, and homestyle tofu... I'm a sucker for the sauce they use with most tofu & vegetable dishes.I looked at the lunch menu... does it entertain anyone else that a lot of the items come with iced tea?
11/12/2010 11:10:20 PM
i went back again and had hunan chicken. it was good. i mean...it wasn't amazing, and i wasn't like "OMG THIS IS THE BEST MEAL." it was just fine, edible, good price for lunch so i'll def hit it up for lunch again. but i'm still not super wowed by the food. it just seems pretty ordinary. at least it is consistent and good enough to eat again though. prob won't eat dinner there again though.
11/12/2010 11:20:06 PM
is this the kind of place I could go when I get out of one class at 3:30, eat, and be back for my next class by 4:30?
11/12/2010 11:24:22 PM
yep!! i get 30-40 mins for lunch and i've gone for lunch and been fine. heard a few stories of horrible service there though, so watch out. last time our waitress was not very attentive and we would have been done quicker if she had been on the ball (still done in under 45mins though). but the food came out super fast (before she even brought us our drinks )[Edited on November 12, 2010 at 11:27 PM. It's gotta be...how long does it take to make some noodles. I'm going to try this place out. I'm into real chewy, meaty noodles...DO THEY HAVE THESE??[Edited on November 12, 2010 at 11:29 PM. Reason : maybe chewy isnt the right word, just meaty]
11/12/2010 11:28:36 PM
^ if you haven't already you need to go to noodles&co. in CV and get the japanese pan noodles...big fat meaty noodles mmmmmmm do want
11/12/2010 11:31:09 PM
mmmmmmmmmI havent been to a single noodle bar, but plan to make it out to one soon. I'll check out that place you mentioned hopefully sooner than later.[Edited on November 12, 2010 at 11:36 PM. Reason : f]

Mao leaving & opening D'sD&N and the now closing of Duck & Dumpling...related? http://www.newraleigh.com/articles/archive/duck-and-dumpling-closing-next-week/and the N&O article http://blogs.newsobserver.com/business/duck-dumpling-to-close-in-downtown-raleigh

12/23/2010 7:08:47 AM
^^ Well damn, I had been wanting to try that place but every time I went over there it was closed
12/23/2010 9:51:03 AM
D&D had always been the weak link in the empire eats chain. The guy they brought in after Mao left apparently wanted to change everything and that didn't help anything. It was only a matter of time, and I'm honestly surprised it took this long for that place to go under
12/23/2010 9:52:59 AM
I hope they open an izakaya there. I'd become broke eating there too much
12/23/2010 9:57:19 AM
^^you could've just said "probably" after the "weak link" talk.
12/23/2010 10:28:57 AM
Damn. I'll always remember Duck & Dumpling as the place where I told my mother that I'd taken up skydiving.
12/23/2010 1:07:18 PM
Sucks for the staff at Duck. A bunch came into Bee after the meeting looking all depressed.
12/23/2010 1:11:43 PM
According to New Raleigh they were mostly placed in other Empire Eats restaurants so at least they're not out of a job.
12/23/2010 1:13:46 PM
Forgot to post here after I got lunch there a few weeks backgood stuff, good portion size, not too expensive...i wasn't BLOWN OUT OF THE FREAKING WATER but i definitely enjoyed it and will return for lunch next semester
12/24/2010 9:56:13 PM
12/24/2010 10:00:36 PM
Duck & Dumpling is apparently going to turn into a cheaper, more accessible Thai restaurant. (according to someone who worked there)
